G25 Iron Review (Low Handicapper)

Instant Offense

Recommended Posts

I picked up a set recently to see if they could beat my i20s and I have definitely noticed how much they dig. The i20 are high bounce so with the G25 my miss is fat. I have had to move the ball position up to get better contact.

I think that I have unfortunately come to the same conclusion as to the G25's. They simply dig too much for me, and accentuate my miss which is an occasional fat shot. I still have my set of G15's with CFS stiff shafts, and I am giving a set of G20's with CFS stiff shafts a go. Took the G20's out today for the first time in some milder weather, and felt more comfortable with the G20's. I suppose it is the wider soles on the G20's compared to the grind and leading edge of the G25's. Interestingly, I hit my Adams CB3's better than the G25's as well. I can understand the love for the G25's, but I don't think they were for me.

Anyone play DG S300's in their G25's? I'm just not happy with the CFS stiff and played S300's for over 20 years with good success. Just wondering. Thanks.

I have s300 in my G30s and love them after switching from the CFS shaft. The CFS is really on the light side.

Good to hear, I love the S300's and will see if I can demo the G25 with the S300. I have had the CFS's in my G25's for a year and everytime I play my scores just suffer. I can't hit these things...

i20/25 and G30 have a little more rounded leading edge but the G25's are not dig friendly irons by any means. I'm super picky about this detail and won't even consider irons with a sharp leading edge and low bounce. Honestly, if you are struggling with fat shots with the G25's that sounds like a swing issue, not a club issue.

So, while I still had my set of G25's around, I thought I would take a comparison photo of some of the recent G series irons. In the below photo, from L to R, these are G15, G20, G25 and Adams CB3. I find the photo pretty interesting. The G15's and G20's are full-on, undeniable, G series fatties. The G25's are a totally different beast. Much thinner than the G15 and G20, and frankly look more similar to the CB3's than its brethren. It's also hard to distinguish in the photo, but the G25's have more of a sole grind, while the G15's and G20's are flatter.

Bottom line, the G25's have been around long enough and are no longer the current G series iron, but all of these G series irons are still relevant IMO. When I posted a few weeks ago that during fall golf, I was hitting the CB3's better than the G25's, I recall someone here essentially telling me that the G25s' were much more forgiving than the CB3's. But to me, while the G15's and G20's provide that traditional G series SGI-style look and performance, the G25's are essentially just another GI iron, albeit a very nice iron. Not better or worse, just different.

Ness, if I didn't have any swing issues, I'd be out on the golf course right now playing golf and making money, rather than sitting in my office pushing paper... ;) But that said, I play enough to know that some clubs just work, and some just don't. I've seen it with all of the different clubs in my bag. I am not dissing the G25's at all--I commend Ping for thinking outside the box with them compared to the earlier G's, and a ton of people obviously love them. But I promise you, without changing anything except the irons, they were digging too much for my liking. So yes, my swing is a contributing factor of course, but I perform better with the G15's and G20's, and some other GI irons. Just is what it is.

Still amazing irons. I'm even scared to change the grips on mine I like them so much....

But I will probably drop a C-Taper Lite into the 4 iron this winter. I just don't get quite the launch out of it to make it an every day iron in the bag. It floats between the 4i, a FliHi, and a 9031 depending on my mood and the course that day.

KBS Tour shafts are nice. I had them in my G20's for about a year and liked them. To be honest I don't notice much difference in playability with different shafts as long as they are within the same general weight range. The variation in my ball striking consistency far outweighs any difference shafts make. At any rate, I've got hard stepped CFS S right now, having moved to them from CFS X, but now I'm about to install Recoil 110's. I could really use some relief from ongoing joint issues so hedging my bet with the graphites.

Big concern with swapping the shafts is getting the swingweight right. I've figured out how to extract the CTP weights, so I'm going to add some weight in the cavity before reinstalling the original weights back in. I believe there is enough space in the badge cavity to add about 5 grams of lead without interfering how the badge fits in the head. Should know more later this week after the building supplies arrive.

I bought 2 sets of G25 - liked them that much. Good thing as the G30 sucks with their jacked up lofts. G25 will be my last set of ping irons.

I was thinking of getting G30's built to G25 specs but then I'd have to pay PING sticker price. I'll just do fine with my G25s.

Can anyone help me?

I was a Speedblade user and gained great confidence in them. I'm not a great ballstriker (frequently miss on toe) but the speedblades really forgave these mishits.

I eventually 'upgraded' to Apex's thinking I was good enough, but a few sessions at the range and I can't even hit a 7 iron properly. I know the winter has ruined whatever little muscle memory I had, but I don't think I had one good hit out of 150 balls.. came back home terribly discouraged and cold.

I'll keep the Apex's for now until the weather gets better to practice, but my mind is racing. I've always been a PING fan and want to pick up G30's on the side and compare them. Are they as forgiving as speedblades?

I know the answer here is to stop missing on my shots, but I play golf because I enjoy it and every bit of forgiveness will help. Thanks in advance.

They will be at least as forgiving albeit shorter iron for iron. I'd expect speedbladez 7-iron to be a rebadged 6.

Anyone have a pic of the soles of both g25 and g30 to compare width?

Ping has taken bounce numbers off their website and replaced them with "bounce width" info. G30 has higher numbers than G25, particularly in the long irons.

Don't ask me why but I bought a set of G30's off ebay. The price was right and it's only money so...

I've reinstalled the CFS's into my 25's in anticipation of throwing them on BST. Getting ready to take some new photos and couldn't help notice that most of the dark finish is gone from the heads. I clean the heads with a toothbrush and dish soap after each round (yes I'm anal), but the finish on the back side of the heads is same so can't blame the change on abrasion wear like the face/sole on some darkened clubs.

No big deal but was wondering if anyone else has noticed this? The lightening of the finish occurs so gradually it's not something you may even notice. At any rate, I think the G's are some of the best clubs ever made. I'm happy to be satisfying my hoing needs, while staying in the G family.:D

I still own my G25's although I've been playing my i25's exclusively for 6 months or so. I have well over 100 rounds on the G's and use a similar cleaning routine that you described, with the addition go using a can of compressed air to blow out the water from around the back cavity badging (anal +1). Yes, my finish is lighter as well. I noticed this right away and when comparing to new G's in the store, mine look more like the older, lighter finish on the previous G models. The finish, to me, looks fantastic, just lighter. They wear great.

Interested in hearing your G30 review once you have a few rounds with them. Good luck with the sale of the 25's. They should move quickly. Fantastic clubs.

After much deliberation between G-30's and G-25's........I went out to the pro shop and ordered a set of G-25's with ZZ-65's yesterday. I'm a big Ping fan and the best set I have ever owned were G-15's w/ZZ-65.......still have them. Tried some Karstens and I-25's both last year w/CFS shafts and neither set was "the one". I like the profile of the 25's more than the 30's so .........going to give the a whirl.

Between winter and a right knee replacement a month ago..........I have a LOT of free time on my hands so I ventured into this thread yesterday. Lots of great stories and a handful of idiots that would argue black and white. The irons should be here in about 10 days along with a new set of Glide wedges............hopefully the snow will be gone in 3-4 weeks and the knee will be healed enough to play.

Fired up for a new season with a new set of Pings

The real interesting thing about this post is how similar the G25 bottom is to the CB3--good call.

I too am looking at irons, and the G25s are definitely on my short list. I probably would have jumped on Nessism's set if they were R flex.

Have had my G25 irons going on 2 years now and have noticed the lightening of the finish.

I'm definitely a digger, and with the relatively wet seasons in the GTA the past couple years i've had to clean clubs more often than usual. I have also always cleaned using one of those half & half brushes.

All in all, although i've probably not hit/cleaned/elbow greased each club in the same proportion, the finish seems to have worn equally well, to somewhere between the classic PING finish and the original darker finish, which is not a problem in my eyes, to be honest.
