PM19 lob wedge is legit

The Frase

Recommended Posts

I am a big fan of the original as it is great out of sand both fluffy and firm, around the greens, out of rough, and tight lies whether you open up face or play it square, but...I didn't like it for full shots from fairway as I have a steep swing and it would dig too much. We're talking major chunks with huge beaver pelts. The club has been in and out of bag as it was magic around green but I felt like I needed a lob wedge for full shots to score with, and it simply wasnt consistent.

I am happy to report that the new PM19 is still incredible around the greens but is also great on full shots. Hallelujah! First time out on Saturday in wet, muddy conditions, and I think I got up and down 6 of 8 times including a full swing on 18 uphill 93 yards to a foot. I was sold.

I liked so much that I am seriously considering getting the 54 to match my 58 which speaks to my newfound confidence in this line of wedges.

Great job Callaway, Phil, and those who improved the shape to make it more versatile.

Anyone else have similar experience and are you buying more than one for the bag?

Funny you guys would post that... I just played my first rounds with the PM19 and wanted to throw it in the garbage can. I never played the previous model so I think this is going to take some getting used to. Just looking down at it inspired zero confidence in my short game. First attempt at a 50yd shot ended in a giant chunk... Hit one of the heel also on a pretty standard lob shot... Idk probably just going to take some getting used to. I'm going to commit to hit for the next month and see if I can figure out how to make this thing work for me. The concept is exactly what I am looking for in a lob wedge.

Saw one today at store. Looks like they greater improved the grind and bounce. Looks easy to lay open and not dig. Which is ultimately why I got rid of the 1st PM Grinds...

What was changed between the PM19 and the old PM's?

More offset.

Higher toe/bigger face.

A new grind that is slightly different than the original. (It is supposed to sit a little lower when the face is laid open.)

And the micro-grooves that were on the MD4 wedges are now present on the PM grind, they are however angled to add more spin when the face is open.

Folks who didn't like the original due to the offset and large surface area will like this version even less.

I am loving it so far.

Full swing 58 is a bold move!

Agree, and that is why I felt compelled to post. Anyone else feel the same?

As I carry 52/58, with PM Grind being the 58, I take full swings too. What's so bold about full swing with a wedge? Just curious

Broke down and got the 54 as well. Hopefully get chance to get out this weekend despite moor rain in the forecast. Will post update on sand wedge performance but I have high expectations. Anyone else?

I picked up the 54 and 58 in slate. It has been really wet down here too but they performed much better for me than the originals. I am more of a picker/sweeper. Hit some really nice shots with them in the first round.

Good question. You are correct that it should not be a big deal to take a full swing with a sand or lob wedge, but my experience as well as many other folks on here was that based on the design of the original is that it dug way too much on full swings. Callaway even acknowledged this to some extent with the marketing for the new version as it was something that was addressed with the new design. I just wanted to share with those who might not have given a chance based on similar experiences with original.

Just saw these yesterday and didn't realize they changed the grind. Basically they put a mid to high bounce M grind on these which makes them very different from the originals which had the 'eye sole' grind. I imagine these will be much better on full shots as long as the hight toe shape doesn't freak you out.

Shaft upgrades for this wedge are expensive--with the buying power Callaway surely has with shaft mfrs., I wish it would follow Mizuno's lead in offering many no-upcharge shaft (and grip) options. I'm not a fan of the KBS Hi Rev shaft but don't feel like paying

an upcharge for the shaft I want (Nippon Modus 105).

When you’re number one in most categories you don’t really have to make everything “no charge upgrade” to stay competitive.

Still waiting for my 54,58 and 64. Ordered Jan 22nd and still not here. Not sure if it’s because I ordered them with the recoil 110’s or not but wow. Sure taking a long time.

When I wear out my PM Grind 1.0 wedges, these will be in my bag. The added offset is something Phil asked for, there's video interviews with Roger Cleveland discussing the changes. I don't care about the offset, it looks a little different than original PM Grind, but I can get used to it very quickly.

You are absolutely correct!

This is why I chose the '19 PM in the 54°, but will be keeping the '16 PM in the 58° (or 60°, or whatever loft I choose for my "Lob" wedge at the time). I view both of these clubs as "shot specific" clubs, but I do ask the 54° to hit more full shots and pitches off good/reasonable lies whereas I ask the 58° to hit bunker shots and pitches/chips off poorer lies. As such, each grind is more tailored to the shots that I'm asking each club to produce.

Makes sense. Maybe they should have offered both grinds from 58 to 64 but only the C Grind (M Grind) in the 54 and 56.

A friend of mine loved the PM grind 2.0 so I bought one for the hell of it. Ive been struggling out of the bunkers at my club since they changed the sand to crushed granite. I bought the 60 in the dark slate and really enjoyed it. Turf interaction is great on full shots. Inspires confidence around the greens and especially out of the bunker. I got up and down 3/4 times in my first and only round with it, and also shot a 69. hehe. I love Phil..... :taunt:
