Callaway Jaws MD5 - Raw Finish?!

Will the MD5’s come in an unplated, raw finish, much like the MD4’s did?

Will they release the raw version in the spring?

Probably...everybody loves the raw, its a great thing. You have the rusting and all the great things that come with that. I would have to imagine it happens sooner rather than later, and quite possibly within the week to be honest.

Don’t know if it will come to retail, but in Henrik Stenson WITB Houston Open. He has the new Jaws 58 C grind in a raw finish. Let’s hope it becomes available to all.

I hope so it's the only thing holding me back getting a set. The black is usually ok and I can live with it but the black on the MD5 is PVD over plated chrome. The wear will look terrible.

Been told that raw may become an option sometime in the spring of 2020, but can't promise that will come to pass.

I have Ping Tour S raw wedges made of 8620. they have the same petina that forged and 431 wedges have.

I imagine the number of people buying raw wedges who don’t partake in golf forums is minimal. I also suspect asking retailers to stock 3 finishes of 4 grinds of about 15 lofts isn’t easy.

431 is stainless steel and doesn't rust

If I'm not mistaken, the MD4 Raw was released a few months after the chrome and black finishes were released. So hopefully, the same holds true for MD5's and they release the raw in Spring 2020, like you said. I get that it's extra SKUs from an inventory point of view, but the raw finish requires less processing/manufacturing time vs. the other ones.

I think it was on the pod cast with Ryan that roger mentioned raw coming out in a few months.

I would be fine with a raw option being Custom Shop only.

Can someone explain why raw is so wanted by some? Not being rude i really mean i want to know why. Thanks.

Ok got it. Wouldnt more pga players use them more? Maybe they just get so many free new wedges it dont matter as much?

Raw is coming in the spring. Confirmed by Callaway Rep

Lots of guys on tour use raw. Some may not get as rusty as others because they do change them out quite frequently. Sharp grooves especially in the high lofted wedges is paramount on tour for stopping power on some of the quicker former greens they play on.

Any news on these?

We just had a demo day at my club last weekend, and I am good friends with our rep so while I wasn't really looking at anything that day I was out there and he had brought a raw wedge to show me and gave it to me to mess around with for a bit. It is nice, other than finish it looks the same as the others. He had given me a 60* which had a new grind option that may only be available in the RAW finish I'm not sure, but its not listed on the website for the other models currently. I was told they would be available for order this month.

I asked a Golf Galaxy manager about this. He said MD5 model offers raw finish, but these are custom orders.

His shop had a problem with stocking MD4 raw finish wedges. Customers would pick them up and handle them with sweaty hands during the summer. Then, rusty fingerprints would form on the clubhead and no one would buy it.

Can you please comment on that new grind for the lob wedge? Did your rep buddy explain the characteristics/profile of the grind? Thanks in advance!

Went over it briefly, he was conducting the demo day so pulled it from the bag and gave it to me to go mess around with. Called T grind, and he said it would be offered in the 58 and 60* wedges. It has a very narrow sole but still had a pretty standard bounce of like 8* I believe, but the sole allows for the club to really lay flat and the leading edge low to the ground when you open it up. I just messed around with it on some standard chipping and pitch shots, took it out for a few holes on our par 3 course and then out onto the course to test it out in one of the new bunkers that was just redone. It could have been the new sand or it could have been the wedge design, but it really digs into the sand. Makes it great for a short with little room to work bunker shot but longer ones proved to be a little tougher, was easier to play with my M grind SM7. I have been a vokey guy for a long time, but if I was to make a switch I could see myself gaming the MD5's in the RAW option with the T grind in the bag or at least on the side for certain courses. Not sure it would be ideal for overly soft conditions.

Seems like the Low Bounce W grind is the ticket for most guys for their LW.

For the player that needs a bit of dig prevention help but needs to see the leading edge be lower to the ground for their confidence, it is a fantastic option.

I was just told by my local pro, that I can order raw as a custom right now
