the other day we play our usual course on tuesday morning.. and the usual suspects show up about 9:30 -- 6 of us so we tee off as a 6 some because our course is not very busy during the week. When we get to hole 4 we run into a 2 some on the Par 5. We wait , then hole 5 and 6 we wait some more. So my cart partner and I drive up to them and ask if we can play thru. They reply " Just the two of you?" and I say back - "No,there is 6 of us" - you should have seen his face when I said -- " We have been waiting for you on 3 holes so far" -- reluctantly they lets play thru. After 2 holes we never saw them again.

That is some slow 2 some to be holding up a 6 some. What were they doing between shots?

These days I would picture them engrossed in their phones oblivious to grass, trees, loud curse words echoing thru those same trees from adjacent fairways or perhaps some passerby 6some.

Trying to think which is worse, playing in a group of 6, or being in a 2 some thats so slow a group of 6 catches you up

To be honest they are probably just as bad as each other

In America they seem far more relaxed about playing 4+.

FWIW I've seen far more 4+ groups in SE Asia (in prime time when you wouldn't expect it) than in the USA.

If a public course let a 4+ group out when the course was fairly busy they'd certainly get grief from the following groups,,,,,, if there was "nobody" on the course, as in South Florida in the middle of July, nobody's care so long as they let others play through.

They were talking a lot as in standing still telling a joke or something , both would walk to the others ball and watch him hit and then repeat the process for the other guy. both would read each others putt on the green. lots of practice swings.

Interesting. In the UK 4+ is generally frowned upon. At our club they enforce it even when there's nobody else on the course.

    We'll do 5/6/7 if we're playing left/right or "validation".

But, it's gotta be the correct group where guys know what's up. . .meaning when you're out of the hole, you're in your pocket. You're not hitting any putts when they don't matter, and two of you are pretty much heading to the next tee when guys are still putting out.

Easy to play as quick as 3 or 4 doing that. But, that's a slow twosome out there.

On an empty course, 4+ is Ok if actually fast players. Not all who do it are fast and everyone has to adjust their pace to do it.

Once I had 8 on a golf trip, 2 foursomes. Play was so slow that we grouped up as 8 and were still waiting on every shot.

The ranger didn't like it but he gave in and asked that we split up on #18 approach, which we did.

    "No point was being made."

So why start a thread about it ?

On second thought, at least you admit it. Thanks for that.

I don’t see the big deal at my club in the winter there’s always more than 4. If you keep pace and not holding anyone up there’s no issue. Usually when a group looks back and see a larger group they speed up.

I am immature ? I made an observation and asked you a perfectly legitimate question and in your only 2 responses towards me you've insulted me both times.

And I am "not very nice" ? LMAO

I can't tell you how disappointed I am that you've blocked me. 😥

But I'll (probably) get over it. 😉

As long as a 4+ group doesn't impede pace of play I don't have any issues with it. As a 4some always allow a twosome or single to play through, it only takes a few minutes. No big deal.

The best golfer are the one that hit 50 yard shots, sit in the middle of the fairway to talk on the phone with their buddies who are on the green. The best.

I'd be up for that if it was during the week.... sounds like good fun and a few laughs..

Not wolf play but we have actually had the normal 6 some for fun have us all tee up at the same and hit drivers timed with a 1-2-3 count down... 6 balls in the air going down the fairway at the same time... quite a sight!

I get this group moved swiftly, generally, not a fan of 5+. It's a recipe for slow play. Had this exact issue this past weekend, i was in a twosome and we're stuck behind an allowed 6, grrr

When the course we played as a 6 is even a little busy we don't do larger than 4 ... there was no one behind us until we played thru the 2 some -- then they were several holes behind us. :-)

This is a weekday situation - most weekdays are wide open. We have been members for over 10 years - so we know the course and can move pretty quick.

Problem with allowing 5somes or 6somes etc.. is that others will see those groups and think, "well why can't we play 5?" So the head pro or whoever says, "Well they're very fast and are never a problem" and then the group that asked "well why can't we play 5" will say, "well we're fast too and won't be a problem". Next thing ya know is ya got a bunch of 5somes out there who are "very fast" playing really fast 5 1/2 hour rounds.

The issue is will every 5 or 6 or whateversome know to always let a single / twosome through? There will always be that guy or group who doesn't let the smaller group through. We see it already with foursomes, and the chain reaction it causes is never good.

I couldn't care less who is playing in front of me as long as they let us play through if they are slow.

At my club, the assistant pro said they actually discourage people playing through because it messes with overall pace. Members who are slow will just move ahead to their correct position when they see anyone behind if they are out of position. The nice thing is that rounds are never over 4 hours on weekends.
