Is anyone still using the Rule of 12, for chipping?

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

I've been struggling with the short-game lately, and am thinking of trying this technique.

Is/has anyone used this method? What are your thoughts about it???

Not really, its a gimmick. First, the science behind it is wrong. Clubs don't roll out a uniform distance as you progress down the set. Second, good short game players do two things: they control loft at impact well, and they control low point well. You still have to do both of those things in the "Rule of 12" system, and if you could do those things you wouldn't need the system.

Its not a putting stroke. If the wrists don't hinge you can't hit down.

I tried the Rule of 12, but found it only worked with adjustments.

Rollout is influenced by turf conditions. Harder rolls more, softer rolls less. And I'm not just talking about moisture. If the greenskeeper skipped mowing that day, you'll get less rollout.Green undulations influence rollout. If the green has spoon or dip spot near the landing point, this can kill rollout; a cut shot would be better. And, up hill rolls less, downhill rolls more.By the time I kept track of all the adjustments, it just wasn't worth the hassle.

Overall: It would work better on gently rolling parkland courses than courses with a lot of true hills and elevation changes.

what's going on with your chipping to make you start a couple of threads about it? i go through phases where i chip like dog shit and it's usually technique/lack of concentration.

lately i've been focusing on dead wrists ala Jason Day or Steve Stricker.

also saw a youtube video of Kevin Kisner giving one of his buddies at his home course a chipping lesson and it has decreased my duffs big time.

One club to rule them all

rule of twelve, to my mind, puts way to many options in your head Keep it simple

practice with a club your comfortable with running it out (PW for me). Then practice with a club that spins it a bit and fly it farther (58° for me )

practice with a few clubs know them.

will say, if your on Bermuda, a bump and run through the fringe isn’t the best option. Anything that lands will stop as often as it runs out. Gotta fly it to the green or use a putter or hybrid.

No, if you want to be a gopd chipper, don't use any rules, tricks, or secrets. I consider myself a very good short game player who' just a little out of practice. Simply, for chipping, I first look at the shot in front of me to determine how I want to approach the chip - high, low, runner, spinner, soft, aggressive, etc. From this, that will determine what club I'm going to use - for any shot, it's always going to be a choice between 2 clubs, or 3 if you're versatile.

What club you're going to use, always then determines the characteristics of the chip - how much it spins, rolls, height. It's simply a matter of learning how the ball reacts off the face for a given club, then you can translate that to any conditions. For example, I know that without fail, a bump and run with my 7 iron is going to carry itself through this rough that's in front of me, so I just calculate how much it's going to stop for each bounce. Or my LW is going to go this high, and stop this quickly.

It's all in the feel, just have to practice it and learn it.

I use it successfully. It requires the correct stroke, which is not hard to execute, and a bit of practice. Distance is of course relative based on slope and condition of the greens. If playing an unfamiliar course I'll calibrate before the round on a flat green. I use a similar system for putting that uses trail foot placement as a guide, which I also calibrate before a round.

Good luck!

For the most part yes. It takes a little thinking (which most people can't/won't do) and practice (again can't/won't). Like anything its something you have to stick with rather than if no immediate good results, resort to next gimmick.

I have observed posts suggesting a rule of 12 (SW = 12) or 13 (LW = 13) complete with bump and roll ratios related to such and bump and roll percentages not related to such, e.g., sand wedge being 50% fly and 50% roll and so forth, all things being even - which is seldom the case.

Integrating the rules of thumb suggests, instead, a thumb rule of 13:

(13- )

(0) 2:1 or 67%-33% = Club 13 LW

(1) 1:1 or 50%-50% = Club 12 SW

(2) 1:2 or 33%-67% = Club 11 GW

(3) 1:3 or 25%-75% = Club 10 PW

(4) 1:4 or 20%-80% = Club 9i

(5) 1:5 or 17%-83% = Club 8i

(6) 1:6 or 14%-86% = Club 7i

(7) 1:7 or 12%-88% = Club 6i.

Adjustments: slope, stimp, dampness, wind, loft at impact, center or toe hit tendency, ball spin-rating, how many beers left in the cooler, etc.

I think rule of thumb works better than rule of , rather something (useful?) to engage thought rather than something that is deterministic or the end of thought. Heuristic. $0.02.

No idea what this method is. But I do use a putting type stroke. Only chip with 2 wedges, a third on really long chips. 58* and 52*. I just hood it with fwd press and put it way back in my stance and putt it. Never gets more than a few feet off the ground, bounces and rolls.

Never done it with anything lower lofted than my 46* wedge.

Short game beyond that shot for me, really anything 100 in, is feel. Pick your club and the shot you can recreate, judge.your lie, the target, pick a shot shape and hit it. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not.

Short pitches I tend to use gravity, kind of a loose soft.swing. Flops are all mental and discipline. Can't overswing or get too much body movement. Just smooth...

Short game, to me is more creative than "practice" but I'm pretty confident in it, wish I had even close to the same confidence with a putter in my hand. On a chip I'm thinking, " I can make this" on a putt I'm thinking "don't miss this". Not ideal...but then again, if I'm off green, I'm chipping. I dont putt.from.the fringe ever unless it's downhill lie or tight or worse...even then it's a decision for me.

I find that most people are confused between chipping and pitching. Many people are technically pitching when they call it chipping - especially pros and better players on fast greens

I have my own distinction between the two:

If you’re looking at a landing spot you are pitching.

If you’re looking at total weight you are chipping.

When I am chipping I trust the club to carry the ball some distance and release to the pin, but I am ambivalent as to the exact ratio. I mostly use a 52 and I club down or up for the lie if I am not on a relatively level area to the green This method is working really well.

if I feel I need to land it on a certain spot I pitch it with the 58.

what I find is more often than not this helps me commit to one or the other and stay aggressive or at least decisive. I also set up a little differently for a pitch vs chip that reinforces sticking with my decision.

I regularly see opponents setup like a chip, take a pitch backswing and decelerate
