Most important majors of the last 30 years

As much as it pains me to say it, the 2009 PGA. The official end of the Tiger Act II. Act I took him to the 97 Masters win. Act II once the new swing clicked in 1999 lasted through until YE pipped him. What followed was the most historic fall from grace that this sport has ever seen.

Sorry Ferguson, this is the only thing that I have to pass time at the moment.

It's so tough to pick one. I am not a golf historian, but my top 5 are:

2001 Masters - Tiger completed the Tiger Slam

2000 US Open - Tiger blew away the competition and won by 15 shots

1986 Masters - Jack's miracle with Jackie on the bag

1977 British - The Duel in The Sun

2013 Masters - Adam Scott breaking the Aussie Curse

Since most are ignoring the 1990 cutoff I will say Norman losing to Mize's chip in in 87. I think Normans first major win in the US would have led to many more. Snead's 8 on the last in 1939 to lose the US Open. First win would have led to many more.

On a more positive note Hogan playing the British Open once and winning.

Great players who thought they might not win one. Amazing how 1 major defines a career. Love, Couples, Woosnam, Garcia, Furyk, Kite etc.

Under the parameters of historically significant to golf, and only since 1990:

By far, the 1997 Masters is first, for obvious reasons. I would say the 2002 US Open is up there, as the first ever on a muni course, putting Bethpage in the spotlight, opening up other muni and public courses for future majors. It was groundbreaking in that sense.

Also up there- the 2000 US Open and British Open for the record-breaking margins of victory, levels not seen since Tom Morris. The 2001 Masters for the Tiger Slam. You could also include the 2004 US Open as significant for what seems like the beginning of the USGA botching course set-ups.

Also last year's British Open due to the significance of the location.

The 2001 Masters is an interesting one, given the historical significance of one player having all the majors.

In the end it has to be the 1997 Masters just because of what it meant, signaling the arrival of arguably the greatest talent in the history of the game. But also the sense that it was a new era in golf, the way he overpowered the course, the subsequent tiger-proofing of Augusta. And all also coming on the heels of one the greatest comebacks/collapses in 1996 the marked the end of the previous era.

But I do wonder if say 50years from now people will look at things differently. The 2001 Masters was the bigger accomplishment even if the 1997 Masters feels the most important for a bunch of other reasons.

Faldo winning back to back masters in 90 was huge at the time, no one had done it since jack

Normans collapse in 96....man that was painful to watch but we all instantly remember it

Tiger in 97 is an obvious one and probably 2000 at St Andrew.... He was perfect, he didn't go on one bunker... Wow!

Tiger again last year, because its one of the greatest sporting come backs.... Not just golf but sport.

Wish Watson had won at Turnberry in 2009 because that would have been my number 1........so my final one would be Sergio or Scott breaking that curse.

I still haven’t figured out how there appears to be smoke coming off the bear as The Hulk throws him. Was the bear that dusty ? Maybe fresh from hibernation and that dehydrated?

This is a great answer. The end of the Tiger era of dominance probably happened that day. During different points up until his resurgence in 2018 he was never the same player due to injury and confidence. Obviously at some points it was far more injury than mental but even in years like 2013 when he was #1 and won 5 times he didn't seriously threaten to win majors. I'm not arguing that Tiger wasn't highly confident at that time; just that the air of invincibility that he KNEW he was going to win when he had a chance died that day in 2009. Even with the injury issues he had in the last decade he might have 2-3 more majors in his healthy runs if that invincibility was still there. That makes it important because he could be at 17-19 without it and we're either talking about him passing Jack or he already would have.
