Best Anti-Left Hybrid for a Sweeper

Recommended Posts

Title pretty much sums it up. Looking for opinions on an anti-left hybrid for a sweeper. Currently game Apex 19 and it's ok. I've tinkered with quite a few hybrids over the years. I have had the most success with Titleist 918 H1, Taylor Made M1 (2017 version), and gamed Adams Idea Pros for almost a decade (should have never gotten rid of them). I did not overly care for Ping G, Titleist 918 H2, and Titleist 916 H2.

Currently intrigued by Callaway Mavrik Pro (I like the compact FW look), SIM (but non-adjustable TM are usually left-biased), and PXG Gen 2.

G410 is way better than G. Totally different more solid sound and feel. Set it flat and open with the correct shaft and it will be nearly impossible to overcook it left.

I am a sweeper and have trouble with hybrids going left. Like you have had success with Apex. Titleist hybrids in the flat and open settings have worked pretty well for me. The weird thing about the Titleist are that the "player's" version usually has a weird offset to it which I think looks like it wants to go left. I had the TS2 and it was pretty solid, probably shouldn't have sold it. I had the SIM Max and it was totally draw biased for me. 100% due to the upright lie angle. I think that anyone that struggles hitting hybrids left there are two options:

Steer away from any hybrid with a fixed hosel that cannot be adjusted more flat if necessary. Hybrids with stock flatter lie angle like Apex, Mav Pro and Mizuno CLK can work if you get lucky. The only hybrids that I'd look at are Titleist, PXG and Ping, because they can all be adjusted flatter and more open and Titliest and PXG can also adjust the weights toward the toe.If you really like a fixed hosel head, get fit and see if you can try shorter and heavier shafts. Something 90-100+ grams and like .5" to 1.5" shorter than stock. If it works, have it built and swing weighted properly.I like the looks of the Mav Pro, Super Hybrid and Epic Flash hybrids which are all supposed to be pretty good at being anti-left, but I have a PXG Gen 2 on order because of the adjustability (and sale price).

I think there are two main factors/categories for hybrid fitting and eliminating the left miss.

1) Weight and length. Most hybrids are too long and too light which further complicates trying to slot them in as iron replacements vs. wood replacements. I think many people would benefit from going shorter and heavier, both in terms of shaft and head weight. The closer you can get to your iron shafts in terms of weight the better, and if you are unable to do so, then additional head weight is your friend, and thus by extension hybrids with easily adjustable weights and/or the ability to add hotmelt. Getting your first hybrid to feel more like your last iron in terms of heft and feel would help a lot of people IMO.

2) Appearance and head shape. Hybrids are often pretty polarizing in that you have models with smaller heads and a bit of offset that are meant sit more like irons, and larger headed hybrids without offset that are meant to sit like fairway woods. Find out which one suits your eye and your swing better. I personally like the more fairway wood looking hybrids, but it is very personal.

I feel that the hook-y reputation that hybrids have has far more to do with #1 above than any inherent CG bias as a lot of people feel. I think CG bias is still important, don't get me wrong, but we are often told to treat our hybrids more like irons while off the rack they are setup too much fairway woods. Don't be afraid to tinker with weight and length, it makes a world of difference.

Might have to check out the G410. I am going back to the 818 H1 since it worked so well for me. Might experiment with the PXG Gen 2, but their stock shaft selection is garbage. Just about any shaft you’d want is an up charge.

In a couple of videos the PING designers specifically mention that for the g410 17 and 19 hybrids, they weighted the heads to not be draw-biased because the type of player that usually buys those lofts has trouble hitting them left.

I'm a sweeper with my hybrids. I find my Adam's pro minis to be fade biased. My left issues are all in my grip.

Sweeper here (hate pulls) - been testing some hybrids against my old Adams and been through Mavrik Pro, Super Hybrid and Sim Max. After a few weeks of testing the two Callaway ones are in the bag and Sim is firmly on sidelines and ended up selling off Adams to a buddy. Both Callaways I have set up with slightly shorter and heavier shafts which helps.
