No new acquistions...?

Recommended Posts

Picked up over the weekend MacGregor Super Eye-O-Matic Tourney Toney Penna 2, 3, 4 woods. Labeled as P83W. Matching serial numbers. Original TT Mac Tourney Shafts with "C" (stiff?) designation. Grips are in pretty decent shape (a two-tone red and black cord color). Heads are in average used condition but no cracks. Face plate has six screws.

Can't seem to find out much about this specific model. Anything remotely unique? Age? Sorting through all the old MacGregor woods info. is a very confusing exercise. TIA.

Pictures make them appear better than actual. All three have this "glob" of lead that has seemingly "run" on the backside of the heads. Very unsightly. Trying to see if it can be picked off or somehow removed. Plus the usual wear points and scratches. Sometimes wonder if one should attempt to do a refinish project (zero experience), professional refinish (expect it would run significant $ relative to value) or just leave well enough alone.

Otherwise Thx. The shape of the face insert was what initially caught my eye.....looked like the old MT's I've seen here and elsewhere.

Good practical advice Tim.

Well, won the auction for my TM-92 Australian Blades, so those will be my newest "score".

Guess someone will be scoring the FG-17s, Radials, and Apex Edge Pros I'll be unloading. Time to cull the herd.....

Thanks guys,

Equally surprised at how quick my Apex Edge Pros went. I put a lower starting bid, and a fair BIN price on them (considering their wear - $75+shipping), and they sold within 24 hours. Almost paid off the Maxflis in one sale.

So the Radials are in the bag today, and the FG-17s are in for league tomorrow. Thinking of culling down to four sets max (Pings and TMs at home, extra set and W&Ds at lake) which means two of three sets (70's flatbacks, Radials, FG-17s) will be going. Unless I pick up another set of Eye2s for the lake......

Boy, culling is harder than I thought!

Which is why I have the number of iron sets that I have. LOL

Considering I haven't been playing golf all THAT long, it's a bit scary how many sets I've been through.

I found this Cash In at my local Play It Again Sports. It's the only vintage club I've ever seen there and I snapped it up for $9.99. It looks to be a 40's or 50's version based on the grip and faux hickory shaft. Took it out for a spin yesterday and tried an old timey pop stroke with it and ended up with 20 putts for 9. Still, it's going in my bag with my 61 Power Thrust irons. I just need more practice on the old Hogan like stroke.

Very nice, but I'd guess closer to 1930's - 40's. I found a later version of the same putter at a local pawn shop for $3 and have also been using a 'pop' stroke with it. Its my anti-yips move. The clubhead can't hardly travel far enough back to get off line. I've been very happy with it so far. Good luck to you.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

Thanks for the comment on the putter, I'm not too in tune with the Cash In history. I too view the pop stroke as an anti yip stroke. It's worked well so far on putts under 3 feet, but not very well on longer putts. It's fun to play around with in any case.

Here is my most recent acquisition. 1959 Macgregor Tourney PT2 CF4000 iron set 2 - PW. Wonderful condition aside of a couple ferrules. Black ceramic faces all look very good, original black leather grips with gold beading all in great shape.

HAB, that was a image copy from eBay. Several copies are currently available there. They have 1980 publication dates and cover thru 1970 or so. Wanted to make sure that this was the book often cited for reference. Only this a.m. did I finally put together the book title and author. Thinking about buying one and wanted verifiaction.

Hey CC,

Just curious, where are you finding all these great clubs? Either you have the best thrifts around you, or are scoring awesome clubs through kijiji or eBay.

I mean, I'm culling the herd and all, but hey, the right new set could bump out a right old set, couldn't it?

Not knowing where to post this.......guess it's here.

Is this the MacGregor Club History (Kaplan) book that is often cited in these forums?

Scooter, I find stuff everywhere. In fact, you might find that chatting with some older guys at the range can produce some gems. A lot of older players hoard clubs for years and if they know you collect, they may choose to part with some.

In any case, it is hit and miss. Just lately have had some hits!
