Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

Bigmean

Recommended Posts

WTF is a tax refund? I am ignoring my taxes, fortunately we are still busy from before holidays so I haven't even bothered going over last year yet and it is February already....

3woodvt, that post really means a lot man. This thread is really about attitude and outlook on the game as much as irons, and really to be this far into it and read a post like that from someone who gets what it really is about and appreciates it is the biggest testament to the success of this thread I have seen in a while. It would be an outright lie to say that what this thread has become was exactly what I had in mind when making it, but looking back at how it came about, while I didn't see it coming, I am not surprised either. Just a bunch of find it in the dirt golfers is all.

So my back has felt really good since Sunday. I am going to hit balls again sometime between tomorrow and Sunday and see how that goes. Should be fine. I am really itching to play just for fun, but it is jam packed here still and golf stops sounding fun with a 4+ hour round. In the mean time I put myself to sleep by going through Japanese auctions..it never gets old and holy crap I could spend $10,000 on stuff I don't even like looks of or is just way to off the wall to entertain just to hit it and see what is up.

I am currently infatuated with a set of Hiro Matsumoto (yes the putter guy) irons. No catchy, if there is any inside info you got on these I will take it. I am sure they were a small fortune new, but the set is like a reasonable amount used, I think? I have no way to valuate any of this nonsense past "looks cool".....they have like a muscleish cb sorta head. Looks small and compact, back of heads are cnc'ed, and they are just super clean good looking head. Plus at this point, The more outlandish the better.

Before this thread, you could not post about being a blade user (unless you were scratch or a plus 'cap) in any WRX thread without being trolled, either directly or passive aggressively, as a poser playing clubs beyond his "skill".

Before this thread, blade users on WRX were more lurkers and less active posters because of the general negative attitude towards blade users.

I have been a WRX member for quite a while, Bigmean, and I have seen and participated in many threads about blades (and started one of my own around three years ago), and I can tell you without a doubt that this is the best thread ever about blades. Whether or not it was intended, FINALLY blade users can simply post about their golf journey* without fear of ridicule or negativity. This thread amazes me still in that WRX members come out of lurking for years to post about blades. Guys with less than a hundred posts now show up to post. And as a blades user that was quiet for six years because I was a 16 index blade user and not wanting to get trolled because of it, I am truly grateful for this thread and absolutely just love it and how it has turned out. And BTW some of us also found it in the physics in addition to the dirt!

MacGregor Colokrom reissue, 3 - PW. Currently in the process of adding 1" extensions and new Perma Wrap Classic grips. With the stiff Dynamic shafts, wondering if I'm up to the challenge of hitting golf balls with these butta knives whilst out on the course. Total capital outlay of $15.00 to find out. Plus a putter. Don't think a 1 iron would be relevant for my purposes, but would like to find a matching SW that isn't 4x the cost of the entire set. Sometimes, its better to look good than play good.

Don't know much about them, I'm afraid. I think I have found the set you are after, or similar. 5i-PW and two wedges? Anniversary set?

There were Hiro Matsumoto irons called the MI-01x and MI-02x (same head from the looks of it, just different shafts), but the Anniversary set has a different design, which, for what it's worth, I prefer.

As for cost, well, it's whatever you want to pay for it. The normal irons are priced on the Hiro Matsumoto website at just under 300,000 yen including tax, but on Yahoo Auction they are much lower.

If we are both looking at the same anniversary set, I think the guy is asking a bit too much considering that the irons are not originally from the same set. That said, I don't know what they were originally priced at, but it was probably a lot more than 300,000 yen.

Edit: Why have I got it into my head that you are looking at an anniversary set?

Grabbed this Macgregor M85 reissue 1 iron off the bay to satisfy my curiosity. Included is a comparison pic of the sole widths - I thought the Hogans were knives...

I want to rebuild the 1 iron to my specs, but it's just so pretty as is, with its GP classic cord grip.

Did the 58-59 hogan sunbursts have 1 irons in the sets? I've been looking without any results, perhaps those better informed than I would know.

So, the first round in over 2 months yesterday. The less said about it, the better. The first half I was actually playing OK, but not scoring well. Second half after lunch (I hate the lunch break!), I suddenly couldn't hit an iron shot. Hit all my irons and wedges fat, except tee shots. Putting and short game were atrocious. Driver and woods were pretty good. Still hooking the driver more than I would like, but it's controllable, and I hit a lot of fairways (10, I think).

Not that hitting a fairway had any advantage: I think they were the reason I was hitting everything fat (I only hit fat off the fairways). We had a lot of rain the day before, and the fairways were more mud than grass (see picture). I think I was subconsciously trying to hit down too much to avoid the mud first.

Here's how a standard par 4 went for me in the second half: Hit ok driver on to fairway. Pick out short iron. Duff it 40 yards short of green. Duff pitch on to front of green. 3-putt for a double bogey.

Another bonus was the weather: cold (near freezing), overcast, and in the second half very windy. Talk about humbling. With no rollout on the fairways, I was barely hitting my driver 240, less if it was uphill. I hit a 5i into a 380 par four, and that was after a decent drive!

One bright spot. The Mac VIPs, when I wasn't duffing them, were gorgeous. Got to figure out their distances and gapping a bit more, but they will be seeing a lot more playing time this year.

This was the fairway: There's my pitch mark with the driver, and about a yard and a half of roll. The surface is mud with a bit of grass.

Tee shot on the hardest hole. It played very long yesterday. I was hitting a 4i second (hit heavy, pitch and 2-putt for bogey)

Today I made it off the ship all the way home and found my three new $20 golf clubs. I dropped a foundie in my yard, took one practice swing and slapped the heck out of it with....yup you guessed it...the brand new Ram Axial Tour Grind 1 iron @37". Somewhere over the rainbow lies a pinnacle gold...it was a little shocky but it went straight and ended up gone baby gone!

I have to say that sometimes this game isn't fair.

I picked up a new little swing key the last couple of rounds and have been driving the ball as long and straight as I can remember. I hit a couple of drives that I think may be among my longest ever - shocking distance for me. He course is playing fast and firm right now, which certainly helps, but I was 2 yards short of a green side bunker yesterday on a hole that usually plays Driver and flip wedge from 80-100 yards for me. Really dramatic distance increase.

Well, to the point of my post. I was feeling pretty froggy with my newfound distance, so I pulled driver on a pretty tight driving hole. I absolutely piped a drive DEAD DOWN THE MIDDLE and DEEP. I didn't drop a club twirl, but I was feeling it. I was expecting my ball to land middle of the fairway and run like a rabbit towards the green. Instead, it landed in the middle of the fairway with a loud CRACK!!! Instead of running toward the green, it richoceted 60 yards in the air DEAD LEFT over the cart path and into the woods!!! We are talking a 3/4 lob wedge OB. Apparently, the ball hit the 100 yard plaque the runs the center of the fairway in the air, and ricocheted off one of the raised numbers. Went from pure joy to utter disbelief in a second flat!

Nice pics, Catchy!

That rollout you get reminds me of golf in Vancouver, just not the yellow grass! You don't see roll on a drive until June, typically.

Hoping to get out next week. It's been months since I could get to a course. Cut my driver down a half inch and it feels like a new club. Hoping I will find a few more fairways. If I can do that it'll be a nice year.

Still in the process of deciding which blades to take out. For my first round I might just keep the MR23, but I've got a set of DP30s (Dunlop) with S400 shafts that feel and look so good... Might have to give them a little workout.

Sir Slice a 37" 1i? That's how long my PW is in one set and 9i in another. Strange.

Stopped in a local shop today to get some work done on LLL (length/lie/loft) on a couple sets. I love tinkering and experimenting. Hit the TA 986 Tour 7i on the simulator and it actually felt way more solid than it had the other day. Compared it to my fly-z pro 7 iron. 11 hits with each. Fly Z was 184 yds avg. TA 175. Fly Z launching at 22 degrees. TA at 24. So I'm sure the lofts are different and much of the distance difference is due to that. I could actually see gaming these TAs, just realizing they are going to be shorter club to club. But I guess that's why there is a 2i and no need for a gap wedge on the TAs...

Also hit a 917 D3 and that thing was solid. Was averaging 335 on the monitor. Ball flight was pretty inconsistent though and dispersion wad like 122 yards or something insanely bad, lol. But I liked the feel and sound a lot.

Driver - TM Mini BRNR 11.5, HZRDUS Smoke Black 6.5

2i- Ping Blueprint

3i-PW - TM P7MB, KBS Tour X

Wedges - Vokey SM9 (52, 56, 60) all M grinds

Putter - PLD Anser

Ball - Bridgestone BXS

I think it's supposed to get a bit warmer from around Wednesday next week, but it's snowing here today.

I hope you get better conditions on the course than I did. I also saw a lot of damage from wild boar, as they scratch up the turf like crazy. Some parts of the rough and fairways were covered with black sheeting as they repair the damage. A friend played at a different course nearby on Sunday, and he said the same thing. Wish I'd taken some pictures of the damage, but I didn't.

So my grips are in for my BBBB Porn Star set. They are the Gripmaster Stitchbacks. Black cowhide with red stitching. Has anyone tried these? I have some classic wrap Gripmasters on my mp67s and I like them a little better than rubber and silicone elastomer grips.

What say all you blade users - do you have a preferred grip for your blades? Are there any grips that you detest?

My preferred grip of choice these days is the Pure Pro. Aside from a couple year dalliance with Lamkin PermaWraps, I tend to prefer some texture to my grip. Had been using Crosslines, got a club with a Pure Pro, found I liked it better than the Crossline. They also come in assorted colors. I have at least one set with red grips, and another with what I call a Skittles or Starburst set; five different colors for 2-GW, but have switched to green for the next couple sets or regrips.

Picked up a couple Tour Wrap G2 grips to experiment with, we'll see how I like them. <shrug>

When it comes to irons or woods, I really don't care for Winn grips.

GripMasters... several years ago, I bought a couple GripMaster grips to test. Put them on persimmon woods, which I was playing more often at the time. These were the grips they had that were like a standard wrap grip, or perforated wrap, with no stitching. In warmer weather, especially the humidity, I found they were quite nice, but when we got to a Minnesota fall, I found they weren't as nice. When it's 40something degrees, it's somewhat less pleasant wiping down a grip with anything wet in order to create a bit more tack. :)

So I moved on...

I prefer Iomic, but may try the Dance With Dragon on my Masdas if the Masda grips don't work out.

Post a pic of those grip Denin. Going to be a beautiful set. One for the books.

Smashed my hand up at work. Can't hold a pen, have to type with 1 hand. No golf this weekend :(

Kingcat I really like the feel of the Iomic Sticky, currently on my Retro TBs, but the deal breaker is that they wear out way too fast. I have the same issue with my NO1 grips in my current BB set. I'm a two glove golfer and am realizing that I like the leather feel and durability. Also with two gloves it almost makes the grips irrelevant in terms of slip and tack.

LOL I am going to try and refrain from posting any pics of my Porn Stars and accessories until they are "ready" for their debut. So I intentionally didn't take a pic of the stitchbacks.

And yes I am going to pimp it out as much as possible. Currently I am window shopping for the ferrules. BBs have a wide diameter hosel and it is hard to find special 0.355" ferrules with a big enough O.D. All black is just about all that is available. LOL ferrules for blades are like high heels for porn stars. Grips are like lingerie. This Porn Star set is going to be all about...wait for it...MONEY SHOTS!!!

NRJ my Miura fitter carries the Pure Pros and I have held them and their feel is more like silicone elastomer than rubber. I liked them because of this.

It is not a big deal, but rubber just doesn't feel as good. And to me leather gives me a more connected feel to the club and shot. Rubber is very good, when dry, with friction and not slipping, but to me that is its only pro.

Also I think Winn grips feel cheap and look tacky. Never tried them, never want too.

I don't think I have ever tried leather grips personally. Have seen them in stores on grip tests but have never swung a club with them. I am curious.

In regards to ferrules, have you talked with msfix13 on eBay? I've got some ferrules from them in the past. Nice stuff.

KungPaocat leather is a different feel than rubber for sure. And it is not for everyone. Part of why I like it is because it is the same material as gloves and also leather is closer to human skin than rubber or silicone elastomer, so it just feels literally more natural to grip leather than a synthetic material.

Edit: Thx for the ferrule tip on ebay.
