Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

The mountain doesn't care how many gears your bike has. The blade man walks into the jungle armed with nothing but simple, razor sharp knives. Sharp enough to sharpen a Patronize Your Pro golf pencil so that it may then draw the number 65 into the the annals of honest scorecard history. A blade is a weapon that is used by cyclists with one gear and fishermen with no drag. There's no help there, it's just you and the animal. The SGI is like an incredibly powerful taser. It's simply stunning. Er, scratch that last bit.

I know, I remember before the advent of the bubble shaft and ping eyes how rounds used to take 4 hours. I definitely enjoy golf more today with everyone shooting in the 70s and sub 3 hour rounds for foursomes because of their incredibly easy and powerful tasers..

-sorry, I couldn't help it, all good just having fun, I couldn't resist after the "powerful tasers" line :)

Fair play, Big. I was a man searching for a metaphor that was better and more memorable than shovel. I'm so sick of hearing about butter knives and shovels, it's forcing me to try to expand my vocabulary with decidedly mixed results.

and if I was in the market they would be near top of the list.

But you have MP-4's, so the only way left to go is Miura. I'm delaying that for as long as possible. I already have a mortgage.

Exactly...I have the MP-4s so technically I am never going to be in the market lol...unless I come across some Miuras after I win the lottery ;-)

We are advocates in here. Operation Butter knife is always a green light. Sample all the blades

Yes. There's no point not scratching the itch once you've got it :)

Only caveat would be jumping in at the deep end with brand new/nearly new irons. TBH, why not just get a set of VR Pros? Especially if you hit the test one well.

Or if you are a Cally guy, try the Protos/Razr X MBs or X-Forged 13s (I know I know, but it's a tiny CB). They can all be had for cracking deals.

Excellent point about getting an older set and I have looked but my problem is that I'm left handed so my options are pretty limited and the few used sets of any of the above mentioned irons are usually pretty beat up so that's why I'm thinking of the 716's

Ah OK... you suffer from that affliction ;)

You have my sympathies. I putt left-handed (otherwise all righty) so I have a small glimpse into that corner of the golfing world you inhabit.

Hey guys. I'm thinking of experimenting with a full set of blades. The reason being is that I bought a VR Pro blade 6 iron a while back thinking that if I can hit that, I'll be able to hit anything. As I've been finding out, especially yesterday, I'm hitting that blade considerably better than my new Apex Pro's. The VR Pro has a C-Taper in it and I have PX's in my Apex's so the shafts are similar. What I've been finding is that I'm over-drawing my Apex's and the VR is just a baby draw. Oh, and the flight and distance are better too. My ball striking is the best part of my game whereas my short game is the worst. The look and feel of the blade is far superior to anything else I've played. The thought of my experiment is to pick up some 716 MB's in 5-P and a T-MB 4i.

That said, my questions to all of you is, am I nuts? Or is this something I could pull off? Based on some of the other comments here it sounds like I may be able to pull it off.

You sure it is not just the shafts? C-Tapers can 5-10 grams heavier than PX for the same flex. That can effect dispersion to the degree you are describing..

No no, just couldn't pass up some easy Scouse stereotypes. And as Catchy points out, it can be just a touch grim in that neck of the woods - and I know grim, I lived in Luton ;)

That looks like a really cool comp! If I wasn't already going to Ireland next month, I'd be 1/2 tempted to work a UK trip around that.

Starting to work through my mental game for this weekends start of the annual match play tourney. 8 members per flight, with a total cap at 32 players. Should be fun. Here are my mental notes for the weekend:

 • CALM DOWN!! Especially on the first tee. Just hit the shots you know you can.
 • Focus on keeping putts on the high side of the hole. When I focus on this, my putting is significantly better. Hard for a putt on the low side to fall into the hole up hill :).
 • Force birdies to beat me. Win holes with Pars. 18 pars will win the match. Constantly applied pressure.
 • Don't try to be a hero. You are never out of a hole. Take your medicine and play for a bogey on mishit shots.
 • Play shot to shot, rather than hole to hole. Focus on putting a good move on every shot. Stay in the moment

I'll cheers to that. I can spend a million hours at the range, first tee box swing always feels foreign to me like it's the first time swinging my long stick.

I was just texting with my dad about that. Was good to hear Rickie Fowler mention that he still gets nervous on the first box.

Exceptional rules to Play by!!

You abide by em and you'll beat 99%+ of the guys out there cuz at your cap you won't be Playin guys where ya need birds to half and win the hole-

You make pars, limit the bogies and take nothing worse and you should collect some silver or crystal!!

The 716MB are slightly harsher than the MP-4'S, but why stop at the 5i? There's a 3&4i in the set and you could also get a CB 2i! I believe that they are all very workable. Go for it!

If only Mizuno was an option..........

Any experience with the Vapor Pro's? There are some sets out there but they didn't seen to really take off or maybe they just didn't have time to?

Vapor Pro's you ask, They are fantastic.

I read they are endo forged so they feel great. I played Maxfli Rev Blacks for 15 years and tried at least 30 sets during that time, always went back. The Vapors were the set that finally kicked them out

I've heard of a guy who got down to a handicap of two as a righty, developed the yips in his whole swing and so taught himself to play left-handed and got down to 4.

Iirc Seve could play both ways...seem to remember him turning a right-handed 4-wood onto its toe and then hitting a great shot left-handed. I can do this with a wedge when up against a tree or fence and can't get to it as a righty...this happens quite a lot ;-)

If you are really interested in the Nike Vapor Pro MBs and you are left-handed (like a mnissen) then this is the place to get them :)

$399.99 - $30.00 (15% new account bonus to a max of $30) = $369.99

[*]Just hit the shots you know you can.

[*]Don't try to be a hero.

My Teacher and his Bro Sam also referred to em as "hero" shots and he chirped at me for years before I finally listened to him. Nerves weren't the issue though my being a hard headed obstinate dick Played a large role, lol ;)

From 1993 on I carried a card like the one below in my back right pocket and if I ever got the urge to be a hero, I'd pull it out, read it aloud to myself, and proceed to hit the prudent shot.

Madison would tell ya that the less that I pulled the card the better that I was Playing.

From mid-June of 2012 through the end of the season the card never left my pocket ?

i actually played most of my golf switching between Titleist 670 and 680's. Of course I was a scratch player then but still do this day I've never been able to find a head more awesome shaped than the 680's (I think Adam Scott still plays these).

Never got along with the 670s, but those 680s were the irons that turned me onto blades. Perfect shape and perfect sole grind. I had a set with Rifle 5.0s and that were just an absolute joy to hit.

Recently picked up a set of Miura BB. Funny enough i don't find it any harder to hit than my previously clubs CB501.

But i do find the ball moves (left & right) a lot more. I'm not sure if it's because of blades necessarily or it's due to the smaller club head, so any minor movements will either open or close the face a lot more.

Congrats on the BBs. And to confirm, yes both the blade design and smaller head contribute to why you can move them left/right more. The smaller face is more easily manipulated by the hands and the blade muscle does not damp the spin. It is easier to square the face but also that makes the head hypersensitive to small hand movements.

Any of you guys playing the PM grind wedges? I picked up a 60° to play around with. What are your thoughts? Especially about toe hit forgiveness. I find my 52° can really put me in a bad spot if I lose the focus on a short pitch or chip. I tried to hit one on the toe on purpose tonight and it seemed like it wasn't as much of a bad shot.

Regarding that Freaks clip of several posts back: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall that the blade playing freaks kill SGI swinging Faith Spirinac after she betrays all of them through the heinous act of messing around with a five hybrid, thus betraying an oath she made to wee blade man Ian Woosnam. It's a cautionary tale for anyone who enters the world of pinhead sized sweet spots without the necessary discipline or without the necessary faith. Faith. Faith Spirinac needed it but didn't have it. Maybe I don't have it. A meagre, midget sized discipline is all I've got and what little I have is fuelled by the power of my obsession with the game. Faith is a different sort of freak...She will require further testing and on-course validation before I will gooble gobble her up as a part of me.

That's a heck of a deal. Even at the numbers some of the others said, that's really good. Especially for something to start out with. I heard the Endo thing too. It may make sense after I saw the steel spec when I was researching them yesterday (S25C). I should be able to get rid of the yellow swoosh, then I just need to decide which of the 3 sets of shafts I have at home in them, PX 6.0, AMT S400, C-Taper S........

The C-Taper is an S-flex so it weighs 120 grams and the PX is a 6.0 and those are 120 grams as well. There stiffness of the shafts are pretty close as is the flight. I don't think that there's enough difference in the shafts to make that kind of a difference. Though it could come down to my swing.

Disgusting. Spirinac is showing a complete lack of class in this scene. Blaming Woosnam and the blade players for giving bad advice on irons can never repair her fragile pride, nor can it change the number on her scorecard. I would never freak out like that, even if I failed to break 100 with blades. Anyone who displays such poor sportsmanship should seriously consider giving up golf altogether.
