Went to Gleneagles today at 11:30 and it was jammed . Decided then to go to Big Run and course was not crowded at all. Plus senior rate (60 or over) was $39 to ride. Course was in good condition. Thought I hit ball well but still shot a 98 from the white tees (6700 yds).

Big Run (imho) is such a difficult course but still fun to play, The terrain is so unique for a Chicago area course. Reminds of courses in Northern Michigan

Anybody ever play Longwood Country Club in Crete or Nettle Creek in Morris?

Played Longwood for conference my senior year, but that was 15+ years ago so I don't remember a ton of details. It was a decent course but nothing special. A couple cool holes but nothing great or high end from what I remember. Kind of fitting for the area it's in, if that makes any sense, in other words similar to other NW IN area courses I've played.

I haven't played Longwood in a very long long time but as mentioned already, nothing special. It was pretty wide open, some long holes, some lay up holes. Greens were in alright condition.

If it's on your voucher list, I would rather play Glenwoodie. Then again, I haven't played that course in a very long long time also so not sure what type of condition it is these days.

I played Glenwoodie in July '14. Nothing really changes there. It's never bad, but it's also never great. Wet conditions are always going to be an issue with the creek unless they dump a lot of money into it, which is likely to never happen. Like a lot of courses in the area they seemed to have cleared quite a number of trees, especially on the right side of the par 5 4th (I believe).

'Still think #16, The Devil Hole, is one of the tougher par 4's in the area.

Sad they had to clear some trees. Assuming it was the dang bugs that caused them to do it. And you're write with it being wet. Guess I never thought aboot it until now but majority of the time it was soggy.

*sigh* 16.

I enjoyed Big Run also. I just remember it playing longer than it said on the card from the whites. If it wasn't so far, I'd play there more frequently.

I've been playing St Andrews every Sunday and those greens just frustrate me. Greens don't roll true so speed is very hard to figure out. Kind of pricey for what you get too.

I had to be in Aurora this morning and have played Orchard Valley a ton so decided to check out Phillips Park. It was something like $22 on TeeOff and the course was way more than I expected, driving through the neighborhood I was expecting an old run down course but they definitely put some casino money into the place. Super short at sub 6200 from the back but fairways seemed to be bunkered and narrow right around my carry yardage on my driver so I didn't totally over power the course. I pretty much used 4 iron off the tee all afternoon and shot a freaking 80, I'm sure the distance had a lot to do with that but a round in the 70's is coming... I can feel it.

phillips park is pretty decent. not a hard course at all. #3 use to be alot harder but they lost a giant tree just off the fairway. 12 is a pretty long par 3. i really enjoy 8, 15, and 16.

anyway i think i am going to play whitetail ridge tomorrow. weather is suppose to be real nice

Played Prairie Landing yesterday. First time there and will definitely return. Really impressed with layout and overall course conditions. Greens were really quick...

I heard it had fallen into some disrepair over the past few years, and to make maintenance easier, they sodded over some bunkers.

Minor gripes: Range was mats only and the register was not working in the snack bar.

But, overall, what a nice track!

Harborside Starboard tomorrow morning. Hopefully the rain will hold off until after noon. It appears that they lowered the price this year to $98 before noon on weekends. I recall seeing $105 last year.

I enjoyed that course even though the weather conditions were British Open like when I played. I look forward to playing that course again.

Small tip: don't drive the cart out to the parking lot. The LoJack will kick in and have the cart crawling like a snail. Lol.

The course is not a links course, but rather a "prairie-style" layout, so it plays extremely long in wet conditions.

Yeah, I've been nailed by the LoJack. Lol. It's really annoying when it mistakenly kicks in near the cart stakes in the fairways, even though you're on the correct side of the stakes.

Im not a fan of GCI. I haven't played there in a couple of years. I stopped going when they cut the heather in the fairways to speed up play.

Played Whistling Straits today. What a beautiful day!

Had an emergency tooth extraction yesterday so I was on antibiotics and meds.

Decided not to drink...mistake. Skulled 3 wedge shots inside 100yards.

Said screw it and hit the Makers Mark bourbon.

Course is in excellent shape. It's extremely green for this time of year and the greens were actually pretty fast.

The mayflies were a non factor which was really nice.

Got the clearance to play Sunday morning. Foxford Hills.

Busy day today. 18 in the morning at RF (outing/tournament). The greens were as fast and true as ever. Bunker game sucked - the recently added sand, while nice, plays havoc with my game. After dinner/awards ceremony we decided to play another 18. Wanted to replay RF, but they were pretty solid (started people off at 1 and 18 after the outing), so we went to Cog Hill. 1 and 3 were full so we jumped on Ravines course. Damn, what a difference! Granted, they aerated the fairways and greens 10 days ago, but it felt like playing a cow pasture. We started at 4:30 and managed to finish right around 8. I don't think we could have played another hole, even if we tried... It's been a while since I've done 36 in a day.

Also played out there today. What a difference a week made out there. Greens were in much better shape and the course was definitely starting to pop.

The wind on the backside was something fierce. There were a few holes that played directly into it which made some holes much longer.

Well, that was a kick in the teeth. I got a bit lucky at Harborside this morning when a large t-storm cell blew through a few miles north of the course during the opening holes. You could see the heavy rain failing, but we managed to stay dry. The winds were blowing, but playable, and the temperature pleasant. Well, it was until we walked on to the 5th green. All of a sudden the wind picked up to 30+ mph, and the temperature dropped 15 to 20 degrees. In 50+ rounds at HS, I don't believe I've seen it play that hard.

I had a decent round going through 16 holes, primarily thanks to some decent scrambling, and to three 300 yard downwind drives on #9, #10, and #12. It's crazy how easy the holes are with a hurricane at your back. Of course, that was going to end on #17 and #18. #17 was playing 115 to a front pin location, and I hit a knockdown 7 iron short of the green, and into the drink. Double. On #18 the wind knocked me off balance on my tee shot, and I topped the ball 30 yards. The wind also knocked me off balance on my second shot, and I topped it again another 30 yards. WTF. My next three shots were 4 wood, 4 wood, 5 wood. Double. My playing partner hit a decent drive that maybe went 210 yards. His 3 wood went 150 tops. He was in the right fairway bunker at 120 yards, and hit a chocked down 5 iron to the front of the green. Crazy. I don't recall ever seeing whitecaps on Lake Calumet.

I certainly wouldn't want to play in this cr*p often, but it was a bit fun to see how well the game stacked up in the wind. Maintaining balance was the toughest part.

Overall, the course was in decent shape. The greens are still bumpy from the recent aeration, but the speed was on the higher end. I noticed that they put a combo tee set on the scorecard. After kvetching about it for four or 5 years, they finally did it. Kudos. Of course, they included the 441 yard par 4 9th on the combo. Ugh.

My, what a difference a day makes. 'Really couldn't ask for a nicer day. I walked 18 at Wilmette this morning. The course is in nice shape. The greens look great, but are running on the slow side. 'Left a few putts short. Pace of play was decent, and we finished in 3:55.

I had a spotty day ball striking, hitting only 7 fairways and 8 greens. However, I was a scrambling fool, getting up and down 6 times. The new counterbalanced putter is working like a charm on the 3 to 6 footers. Throw in 3 birdies, and I'll take the resulting 2 over any day.

Mt. Prospect yesterday, first time there since the re-do. Fairways were in pretty rough shape, lots of bare patches. As for the greens, I'm pretty sure Krusty the Clown was in charge of the design. Hard as a rock and loaded with multiple 3 foot high tiers on each green. Course is short, 6300 from the tips but only par 70. I played from the silver which were 6000 yards, but proved to be an appropriate challenge given how hard and lightning fast the greens were. Actually really liked the layout from 6000, it was fun playing driver-iron as opposed to driver-3hybrid on all the par 4s. Had a few bad breaks and one very unlucky double bogey on 17 when I was 40 yards out dead center in 2 and one bad bounce on my approach shot turned it into a disaster hole. Overall I was very happy with the 84 and felt like I struck the ball much better than I scored.

For $55 with a cart I thought it was a great deal for Sunday golf. I would go back just to see if I could play those greens better although the course migth just need another year or two before the greens become more friendly.

I played there once last year and also called out the greens being designed by Mickey Mouse. Horrific!

Ended up playing Saturday at Silver Lake with a buddy who lives out Orland Park way. Oh my. Wasn't my first choice but I was lucky to be out. Hadn't been there in close to 10 years. First off, we get there 11:30 and was told there's a "glitch" on the timesheet so instead of teeing off at 12:15 we had to tee off in 5mins off the 10th right now or wait until 2pm. Thanks for that. Got round the back 9 in 1:45 and then the front in about 2:30. Blew a gale. Strong northerly blowing pretty much straight up and down most holes. Hitting hybrid into 440yd pars 4s then hitting 6 irons on to 530yd par 5s. Greens were decent but we were half whacked on the 2nd nine. Funny thing is, it didn't look like many were on the course.

HOE was fantastic on Saturday. Weather was better than predicted, greens were smooth and quick, such a change from anywhere else I've played this year. Challenging wind out there, 3+ clubs at times, hit greens with a 7i from 135 and an 8i from 118, was hard to trust but it worked.

Agree. Played out there Sat afternoon. Strangely the wind laid down in the middle of the round, actually started to get warm. Greens were really good. They are aerating today and tomorrow so it will be a couple of weeks before I return. Love that track.

Bummer they're aerating but I understand it. The par three 4th was a real challenge with the wind, 9 iron barely cleared the hazard, at least 3 clubs more than normal.

Played George Dunne on Fri. The greens were awful. Honestly, to charge full summer rates when the greens were slow and bumpy is borderline criminal :(

I was impressed with their pace of play there though. Full tee box and we still managed to get around in ~4:30 which is acceptable for public golf.

Cog Hill greens are a mess. Played course #1 two weeks ago and course 3 yesterday. All our putts were going airborne. Can't believe they punched the greens this late and still have the gall to charge full rates.
