Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round2)

Is Maple Meadows and The Preserve closed? There are no tee times today, tomorrow, or Sunday. It could be an issue with their TeeItUp booking engine, but other courses using TeeItUp are working fine. Too much rain?

Trackman and a new 90 day guarantee at VH GG, looks like they really want to compete with the PGA SS across the street when it opens, sadly that location will probably close within a year just like Schaumburg and Downers.

I love that store. They always get demos of new equipment before the PGASS and always have various shaft options for each one. I’m not a fan of the staff at the PGASS. If a prospective customer isn’t a fat white guy they treat him like (s)he has a contagious disease.

... I wish! As a silver haired in shape 65 yr old I can't walk hardly anywhere in the PGA SS without someone asking me if I need help. Often more than once. That said, I have befriended several employees in Downers so they know me and just say Hi and sometimes talk golf or Humana without the sales push.

First day of our Ryder Cup in the books. It looks like as long as you were north of Schaumburg, you were ok weather wise. Luckily we played at Makrey Memorial, and the weather was perfect. Couple drizzles here and there, but otherwise dry. The course was CPO - not allot of standing water, but very wet. Obviously roll out was almost non existent, so the 6600 gold tees played closer to 7000 yards. Despite the rain, the greens were perfect and super quick. First time playing the course, and I must say I like it - a lot!

During our morning fourball format, we started like crap and were 5 down after 7 holes. Won our first hole on 8 and managed to tie it up on 13. Should have gone 1up on 15, but you won’t win too many matches if you can’t hit the green from100 yards. 1 down after 16, even after 17 and of course as is usually the case, they drain a long birdie putt on 18 to take the match 1-up.

The afternoon alternate shot was a snooze fest. Played one of their worst teams and won 7 and 5. Singles tomorrow morning. Should be fun - everyyhing is tied up 6-6 after today.

Headed to Indianapolis tomorrow morning to visit family. Was planning on playing 2 rounds while down there but they are estimating 6 inches of rain... Going to go to topgolf instead. Should be interesting seeing what my fiance's 85-year-old grandpa thinks of it!

If by some miracle the rain misses or holds off until later, I highly recommend Bear Slide. Weird name for a golf course and the logo (a cartoon bear on a slip-and-slide that kinda looks like its hand is in its crotch) is equally strange. However, the course itself has a really good layout with interesting but fair green complexes. It's also right down the street from Purgatory, which I'm told is excellent.

Thanks for the advice. We would have played Purgatory. They live up north in Carmel so it is pretty close. I will have to check out bear slide, for the logo alone.

Teed it up at Fox Run this morning. I really do need to create a sticky thread for walking friendly courses. I forgot that these a-holes charge you for a cart even if you're walking. What the f*ck is that? Gee, I guess I should feel lucky that they let me walk. I still wound up waiting on every. Single. Shot.

The course was in playable condition given the rain we've been having. A few wet spots, and a few areas with dying grass that looked like they'd been under water for a few days, but otherwise it was mostly dry. The greens were soft, and rolled with moderate pace.

Nice round ballstriking on this fairly narrow course. Ten fairways and 11 greens. A couple of birdies and four scrambles kept the score acceptable.

I'm going to play it by ear tomorrow. I'll wake up early, and check the radar to see if there is any area that looks like it'll be rain free for a few hours.

Day 2 of our RC at Makrey. Place dried out enough so that carts were 90 degree. Yay! Still hardly any roll, but definitely better than yesterday. The greens picked up some speed as well - had to be at least 11. Good luck putting downhill... Oh, and the wind.... on par 3 17th, which played 225 to the pin, I put a 3h to the right of the green, while the other 3 guys proceeded to hit drivers and all 3 came up short. In the end, the good guys took the singles 7-5 and the Cup is staying in Chicago ???.

Glad to see that the early forecasts were wrong, and it's going to be a rain free day. I headed down to Coyote Run. The course was in very good condition, with very few wet spots. The greens were slow though.

Another solid round ballstriking with 10 fairways and 13 greens. Only one birdie, as a I struggled all day to get the ball to the hole.

Blackstone kicked my butt yesterday. Greens were rolling faster than ever somehow. Bunkers were perfect too. I hit the drive of my life on 3. Split the trees and had 70 yards in, about 30 yards past the last tree. Told myself to leave my LW below the hole. Put it about 7 feet past the hole. Barely tapped my putt, just missed the hole, and it rolled 15 feet belpw the hole. 3 putt. Played it in 3:40 at the 7:36 tee time.

I was pleasantly surprised by Makrey. I can see why Big Run is polarizing, but Makrey? It’s pretty much all in front of you, nice mixture of holes, great greens, good condition... What’s not to like?

Played a very underrated Pinecrest yesterday. Classic course, tree lined, no two holes the same. They are definitely top 10 in terms of green in the area. Very few ball marks, yeah, shocking. The greens rolled very true and were at a very nice pace. Their practice facilities are above average. We walked in just over 3:45 and that included waiting on quite a few shots on the back. For us old guys, $39 walking on a weekend is a decent rate for a quality course.

Bear and I headed up to southern Wisconsin and walked 36 at Brighton Dale Links White Birch and The Broadlands. BDale was like walking on a wet sponge. The rough was super thick because they haven't been able to cut it due to all the moisture and it was playing really long from the white tees since there was no roll in the fairways. I didn't do myself any favors though, since off the tee I was slinging draws and leaving myself with difficult approach shots. I did a ton of scrambling around the greens and managed a 76 despite no birdies. The wind led to inconsistent green speeds since it whipped all the moisture off and they got progressively faster as the round went on. That's to be expected though.

Broadlands was significantly drier. The fairways were giving out some roll and I managed to correct my earlier issues and tighten up my draw off the tee. The greens were rolling at about a 10 but they had a lot of foot traffic on them over the course of the day and were kind of bumpy. The pace slowed on the back and what looked like a sub-4 hour round at the turn ended up taking 4.5. None of this came as a surprise though, since all of that tends to be Broadlands m.o. It's a really fun, wide-open layout with some elevation change and not a ranger to be seen. Again, no birdies and again a 76.

I've barely posted in here this year since I've barely played any golf, but I've enjoyed reading where you all are playing. I finally got out for my 5th round of the season. New job, moving ect hasn't been good for getting out a lot but some how I was playing in mid season form today. Got out at Old Oak, been maybe 20 years since I've played there and I forgot how fun the layout is. Course was in pretty decent shape, greens were slow as can be, 4 birdies, 2 bogies and a double and I ended up with a 71. Maybe I should keep playing as little as possible....

BTW anybody else think prices this year are out of control? We got onto Old Oak for $45 but it seemed like most average courses wanted $70-80++++ and you had to dish out $90+ for a decent to nice course...

The crazy extended winter we had with snow on courses in April, long periods of no rainfall in July, and recent storms forced a lot of places to increase their maintenance costs. The easiest way to offset those costs is to increase rates.

Could be maintenance costs, but I think it’s just trying to get lost dollars in March and April back. There was a lot of disease activity this summer, so the fungicide budget went up. More than a few courses didn’t even fertilize this spring. I work for a landscape supply distributor, so I’m not guessing on some aspects of rate increases.

Fuller has to catch that pick!

Bears tried to get too cute on a couple of 3rd downs with 1-2 yds. to go in the 3r quarter. Give the ball to Howard.

Trubisky looked very skittish pretty much the whole 2nd half.

Aggravating to watch but at least it was close.

Fuller had a bad game. So did Nagy. Looked like the rookie coach he is. Trubisky’s deep ball is as accurate as Phil’s.

Nagy had an AWFUL 2nd half. He played not to lose...and that's exactly how you do lose. It was John Shoop making a triumphant return. I went to bed pissed, and I still am. Rodgers didn't even have to move an inch from the pocket that second half. You've gotta score points in the NFL and getting complacent and sitting back in the weeds won't win you anything. Nagy obviously didn't learn from his massive error for the Chiefs in the second half of that playoff game last year...
