Paige Spiranac?

I saw a Callaway Promo with Hank Haney going around the West "looking" to help people.

Saw where he happened to "look" at a Top Golf in AZ where a Diamondbacks player and Paige just happened to be hitting balls.

Paige had one of those back-numbing Gulbis/Creamer type downswings -- my back spasms merely watching it. Hank smile-frowned, as he should, and I saw him doing the same thing he'd do with a new golfer - nothing has changed in 20 years when I saw him at his range at the HH Ranch - same stuff. Lots of arms - clubhead out on backswing - okay, swing to right field on downswing - too armsy but gets quick (if inconsistent) results. Any swing that relies on arms will be inconsistent but you can get instant results - hint, hint for those buying Hank videos.

But it looks as if he did Paige a favor -- her downswing did not make me cringe after Hank - wonder if she trashed his advice or asked her instructor about it.

Agreed. I was always taught, armsy swings will not only yield inconsistent results, but fatigue you very quickly. No one's timing is that perfect every single time.

Hey-now all those that dislike Michelle Wie will have someone to cheer for. She is doing it the right way and "learning how to win" :)

PS-just looking at it the amateur gave her the win at the finish. Doubled 16 and bogeyed 18.

Jordan did the same in the Masters.

Willet the worthy winner.

Knows the secret to the golf swing to own it.

She beat a 19-person field, 6 of which were amateurs. Zero of the top 25 cactus tour money earners played in the tournament. There was no playoff since Hannah O is an am. But yes, great win.

I cannot believe there was no playoff. You are incorrect on the top 25 not playing. The girl that finished t4 is 15th and the money list is wildly out of date. Said girl is listed as 2 events xero wins and won the two previous events to this one. That said Hannah O'Sullivan has already played well on much bigger stages than Paige and I would have expected her to win out. The am did win a Symetra tour event last year as a 17 year old.

The lengths in which some of you will defend her is hilarious. Ok, 1 or 2 of the top 25.

Interesting how she was nowhere to be found on the Cactus Tour until the Symetra Tour started and all the good players went with it. Wonder if she'll skip Q school again this year.

She's got to crawl before she can walk... at least she's crawling, so to speak. :-)

Wonder if she has a better downswing now, because that earlier effort won't get it her anywhere -- Haney frowned at it before working with her.

Not everyone jumps out on a Tour and is a world beater. She went from epic embarrassment on an International stage to having some success after some time, and beginning in events where she truly should have been in the first place. If she's going to have any success going forward she needs tournament experience at an appropriate level before she jumps to the next stage. It's not amazing anyone is defending her. It's amazing she actually took two steps back and found a way to win she she looked like she was going to trunk slam again. She's definitely in the right place right now. If she can get to the Symetra next year, then good on her. She's clearly not ready for anything else right now, But at least she's out there playing and trying.

If you read my posts you would know I was not defending her. :( But the facts are the Cactus tour stats are way behind. For some reason they did not post the usual group picture with the winner holding her placque. Personally I think she will soon give up and try to use her, somewhat, popularity for a gc gig. This Cactus is way below even the Symetra tour in quality of play. If you cannot dominate it you have no chance. Imo of course.

The lengths in which some of you will defend her is hilarious.

The lengths in which you will go to tear her down and diminish her is kinda sad actually. I don't think she embarrassed herself months ago in that international event. Was it good? No. So she took a step back, went a different route, tried again and won a Cactus Tour event.

What's not to like about this story? I'm pulling for her.

Married to Callaway Clubs but I cheat with Nike Clubs on occasion.

Let's just say she has a very uphill climb ahead of her. She is or is about to be 23. She needs to improve monumentally and there are more talented, and younger, players coming from the US Korea and other parts of the world every year.

Agree.

Wonder if Callaway has gotten her a swing coach other than Haney...

So why are you pulling for her as opposed to say the girl who finished 3rd, or lets say 5th.......Why should we pull for someone in a golf tourny because they post pics of themselves on the net as opposed to someone who has to depend on golf to make a living at golf?

I appreciate good-looking women and I know that the LPGA has many of those, but when you suggest to me that it’s a big-time driver of viewers and that it’s why we’re all watching, I don’t know if that’s really true. In fact, I think you’re selling not only the LPGA but yourself as a real fan quite short on that one.

If you weren’t a fan of the sport, would you be watching the LPGA? No. I am guessing that the vast majority of us who watch the LPGA, do so because we are looking to see well-presented golf first and foremost. I think it's probably accurate to say that the good looks of players like Paula, Azahara and Paige are really just icing on the cake.

We all ought to be able to agree that sex appeal isn’t the primary driver of the LPGA. Heck, that’s obvious to me in this world where no one outside of golf fans really watches or pays any attention to weekly golf events. The fact there is only one (or a few) Paige Spiranacs is evidence that the LPGA is not overrun with this phenomenon. We have to remember that while there may be a few noticeably more attractive LPGA players, the vast majority are (by default) average looking young women. The same is true for men’s golf. And I think with both sexes, they are more or less all out there to compete first and sell an image second (if at all).

Just start thinking for a moment about why you watch the LPGA. There are some pretty legit reasons to appreciate these broadcasts. I’ve read a lot of complaining here on GolfWRX about NBC, Fox and Golf Channel broadcasting yet in many ways the LPGA seems to get it right…consistently, too. And yet here I am listening to a lecture about animalistic desires as though there’s something I don’t understand about that overly simplistic take on this.

Here are a few reasons you watch the LPGA that have nothing to do with sex appeal:

(1) The Cream of the LPGA Crop Are Consistent Winners

What causes ratings to drop in golf? Ratings tend to drop when name recognition isn’t high up on the leaderboard. Worst of all, when a fringe player comes along and wins a big tournament, the ratings drop quite a bit. We need only go back to Danny Willett winning the Masters or KJ Choi winning The Players. Good for DW! Good for KJ! We’re all happy for them but are we going to buy the 2016 Masters DVD or the 2005 DVD? ;)

Do folks care about those fringe players? For that moment they are in contention, sure. In a weeks’ time though, we’ve forgotten their accomplishments. Is that a knock on Willett or Choi? No, but we won’t start investing any emotion in following those players until they start winning regularly on US TV screens.

We’ve proven over the last few decades that we want to see repeat winners. Even more, we want to see heroic, championship seasons wherein a player wins several times: see Tiger, see Phil, see Rory, see Jordan, see Jason, etc.

The LPGA provides instant name recognition on any given week. Either Lydia is trouncing everyone, some famous American is near the top (Thompson, Piller, Kerr) or one of the 8-10 seriously good South Korean women is seeking another title. When you get down to it, the LPGA carries a lot of name recognition for avid fans like us who want to see great golf but who also appreciate consistently seeing players who we feel are the very best at what they do.

(2) The LPGA Broadcasts are Refined and Well Presented

Does the LPGA lack coverage of actual golf shots a la NBC? No, they show non-stop golf. Does the LPGA have announcers who constantly fight for air-time and spoil the product? No, in fact Judy Rankin is one of the most beloved golf commentators currently employed anywhere. Does the LPGA have offensive personalities? No, virtually every commentator associated with the LPGA is a humble, golf-first personality who puts the product before themselves.

If only the men’s side of the game could take a lesson from how classy the LPGA broadcasts are. Plus, if I had to watch a single commercial 100 times, it’d probably be one for ANA rather than Cialis. ;)

Oh yeah, and the courses the LPGA visits are often strikingly beautiful whether they are in Asia, the Middle east or somewhere here in the US. Think of how many times you’ve said to yourself, ‘wow, that is a gorgeous golf hole!’

(3) Despite the Allure, Sex Appeal Takes a Back Seat to Great Golf

If the courses are get-able, the players automatically post numbers in the 60s. We routinely see someone go out and shoot low-60s every week! Sure, the men may be physically more capable (as they are in any sport) but golf might be the one sport where you can actually marvel at something the women are doing and say with some confidence, ‘wow, that’s as good as anyone in the world!’ Think of some of the putting and some of the rhythm we see on the women’s side. Think of the mental focus we see on the LPGA—it’s a quieter, more calming focus. When Gerina hits 18 or 18 greens or Lydia hits every fairway, that’s impressive enough for me.

When you take all of that and start talking to me about sex appeal I just lose faith in humanity. Sex Appeal isn’t even in the top-5 reasons why we consistently tune in to these broadcasts. If sex appeal was the biggest thing the LPGA had going for it, they’d be off the air instead of growing in popularity.

Take a player like Na-Yeon Choi for example. I would much rather watch her play 18 holes, which that smooth rhythm and that beautiful swing than someone like Natalie Gulbis. WhoTF cares about Natalie freakin’ Gulbis?! Some might rate Gulbis as hotter, sure, okay, big whoop. I can only name about 1,000 women hotter than Gulbis off the top of my head though. I mean, that’s great for a glance or two, and we can all appreciate it, but I’m not willing to sacrifice on golf. Now, if Paige Spiranac is shooting 64 to Shenshen’s 66, then I’m all for hotness getting the spotlight. Great, we’d get both.

But not at the cost of serious, legitimate, competitive scoring.

Like the majority of male golfers and golf fans I'll take a Paige Spiranac trick shot video over watching a bunch of homely over weight Asian chicks play golf any day of the week.

Are people really so obtuse that they don't understand why she is "blowing up"?

1. She's totally HAWT.

2. She wears skimpy clothes and has a killer body

3. She plays golf and like showing off the hot bod

4. She's having fun and sharing her videos on the www.

5. She doesn't take herself too seiously

Modern social media at its finest I say. Do all "golf videos have to be serious instruction?

Majority? I couldn't disagree more.....

I prefer to look at REAL golfers - top Rolex Rankings - of all kinds. One of my all-time heroes is Inbee Park. So you're saying she doesn't count because she's just a "homely over-weight Asian chick"......

I have played a lot of golf with Hannah in practice rounds and gotten to watch her up close in events. I played in most of the bigger AJGA opens and invitationals that she also played in and it always seemed like she won whenever she played. She is the most even keeled, steely eyed competitor I've ever witnessed in person, male or female.

Yes, but I stopped going to those places about 30 years ago, and even then was dragged into them, except for that one time after the divorce hearing...

Good golf or hot chicks?

If I want good golf I'll watch the men play.

She has a very bright future in golf. Unlike the subject of this thread. Watched some of her 64 at the Lpga Founders Cup here in Phoenix as well as some good playing at the ANA major.

Yes, you will see golf that most of us aspire to play.

The men? Most of us, hopefully admittedly, can't even fathom that level of play. Those guys are the best on the planet and devote their lives to do so...
