So....I kinda want a 7 wood.

Two years ago, I would've smacked myself for typing that. Two years ago, I took out the 2 iron and put in a 5 wood; it's now my most reliable club. Go to club off the tee on short/tight par fours and just great off the deck. Next club down is a 4 iron and the gap there is a bit too large IMO.

I don't like hybrids, and through all my trying, can't get along with one. I'm considering a seven wood to replace the four iron, at least on some courses. Figure it'll go a little further than a 4 iron and spread that gap between three clubs instead of two. 5 wood is about 220-230 typically but can hit it further than that; four iron is 210 stepped on.

Who here has tinkered with a seven wood? What was your experience like?

Any recommendations for a guy who likes deep face fairway woods? My beloved 5 wood is a Cleveland Mashie (carry the strong 3 as well). I like the compact head/deep face of the Mashie series, but haven't been able to locate a matching 7 wood. I don't hit the ball particularly high, but am definitely a high spin guy. Pretty sharp angle of attack, hence why I probably get on well with deeper faced clubs. 110mph or so with a driver, 1-3 hcp or somewhere thereabouts.

I play a Bio Cell + 7 wood and love it. I have never been able to hit hybrids well, and hitting a 4 iron consistently has always been tough for me also. The 7 wood launches so easily for me. It is a perfect 210-215 club for me

Like you, I was eager to add a 7-wood - and finally found a good deal on a PING G20 a couple of months ago. I have the G20 4-wood and love it, and just knew the 7-wood would be a great add. So far, I have been hit and miss with it -- and am now to the point where I have gone back to the 20* hybrid it replaced. I was hopeful it would be automatic (especially on a certain long par 3), delivering 220 yards on demand. Rather, I've been inconsistent - and I'm hitting it too high in the Oklahoma wind. I have not fully given up on it - and I plan to practice with it over the coming months.

I just crossed this bridge replacing my 4 iron and was debating between the hybrid and 7 wood. Looking at 7 woods the only things that caught my eye as something I would like that didn't have what I would consider as too big of a head for a 7 wood was the older Callaway models. Heaven wood, steelhead, etc. Anyway I went with a Cleveland 588 4 hybrid. Simple design, pretty much no offset, nice size, and although I haven't taken it out on the course yet and only hit a few balls it doesn't have an extreme left bias. I wasn't hitting my 4 iron terrible but I'm just looking for more playability, more trajectory, and some forgiveness.

I have a 910 7 wood laying around somewhere. I hit it way too high. Part of the problem is the difference in distances between varying strikes. It might be 20m whereas with an iron the spread is much smaller. Still quite a cool club. I recently played a tournament in the wind (playing a tournament is unusual for me!) and I became acutely aware how high I hit the ball in general. I just craved a 2i or something to get the ball in play on some holes.
Having said that, you'll have to pry the 906F five wood out of my bag.

You get the correct hybrid and that is always going to be more accurate than a 7w. Not as soft landing, but better in wind better penetration. I use a 913H set to 23.25 open.

Added a Callaway XR 7 Wood this year. Best club I have added to the bag in years. I have hit and held more greens from outside of 200 yards with it this year than I have the previous 5 years hitting a 3 hybrid. The beautiful high trajectory of the 7 compared to the 3H is what put it over the top for me.

I won a Great Big Bertha FW in a sales contest. I like my 16* XR Pro a lot and had no need to siwtch it out of my bag. I really like my X2 Hot Pro 23* hybrid too. SO I decided to look at replacing my 20* hybrid with a GBB 7-wood.

It's 21* and I ordered it shorter than standard at 41.5".

I want a club that I hit higher than my 3-hybrid with a carry of 215-220 on a well-struck shot that lands softly. I had the chance to hit it last week at the range and on course. The flight is what I have been looking for. High and soft. I dropped 5 balls down on a fairway from just outside of 200 (202 to be exact) and hit the green with 4 of them on a difficult mildly uphill shot into a little breeze. I hit it on the 2nd shot on a par 5 and flew the ball softly to the front 1/3 of the green.

The only issue is that I am not getting the distance out of it that I had hoped. I can hit my 23* hybrid about 205 in the air on a well-struck shot and I'm only consistently carrying the 7-wood about 210. Not enough of a gap to justify keeping it in the bag. I need that extra 5-10 yards of carry so the next step will be to add a little length back and see if I can control it the way I want at 42".

7 woods used to be called 5 woods. It's a very versatile club. I can use mine anywhere from 170-210 yards.

I do believe you need to "hit down" on them a bit, it's not like sweeping a 3 wood off the turf. I don't use hybrids, but I do have a garage full of them.

OP, there's no shame in it. The more modern change to lower spin on everything has effectively made the 7w a 5w, and the distance gains made in 3woods has created more distance gaps on the front end. I've been gaming a 7w for about 20 years now, starting with the King Cobra Baffler my parents got me for Christmas in high school; it just fits my game and gaps the best, and I've never been a good long iron player despite not being a short hitter. I think I'm a similar swinger to you, 3-4 hcp, highish spin but low to mid launch, definitely not high. Like you I've always gravitated to deeper faced woods to keep the spin down a bit, and anything that was easy launch created moon balls even though I'm usually a low ball hitter. Went from the Baffler to a GBB 7w for a few years, to an Amp Cell 5-7w, and now a Callaway V Series Heavenwood. A lower launch shaft worked wonders in the Amp Cell and currently the Callaway V Series. I have also used a Tour Edge CB2 7w, that's a fun little club if you can find one. Compact head, yet deepish face setup. I picked one up last year and like it, just haven't worked it into the bag yet as the VSeries is just so easy.

I have an old Callaway Heavenwood (the original Big Bertha steel headed version) with an X100 in it. The thing's just stupid easy to hit long, high, and straight--matter of fact it's almost impossible to do anything else with it.

A buddy and me joke about that there's a rule of thumb where every 10 years you need to drop a long iron and add a fairway wood (not hybrid!). When you're 20 you should definitely be rocking a 2 or 3 iron. By the time you're 80 it should be all fairway woods up til about 8 iron or so. We're only half kidding about this.

I bought a 7w when I seen Bubba playing one earlier this year. I wanted to give it a try because I had a tough shot into a par 5 carrying all water and hit 3 iron into the water that cost me some money. I just wanted something more reliable. It is now my favorite club. Mine is turned down to 20* and doesn't launch to high. It's a beautiful penetrating trajectory. I'm a high swing speed guy as well. That said a 5w is probably my favorite club of all time.

A couple decades back if you had a 7 wood in the bag, some turned their noses up, a few today may still but all I can say is the 7 wood is a go to club for anything from 185 to 210 me.

It's considerably easier to hit high and land soft than any 3/4 iron I've ever hit. A little choke down gives me a 4 iron length, regular grip a 3 iron. Callaway's heavenwood is a super 7 wood.

Lots of choices today for replacing the long iron game with many good clubs. A long 7 wood and some hybrids covers it for me and makes the game easier.

I just got back from Oklahoma, playing a few Perry Maxwell courses. The wind is thicker than in Arizona. I use a Redboard in my 4 wood and currently have a Whiteboard in my 7 wood. I had no problems going into the wind with it. You may need a different shaft in your 7 wood. I'm keeping the Whiteboard for windy conditions and going to find a Redboard for my normal Phoenix golf because the added height is helpful here.

I hate hybrids myself, but my hybrid game improved now that I have my 24* with the same shaft and length increment to my irons. Still, I much prefer using fairway woods, and my 21.5* 949MC 7 wood is so reliable for me. High COR, high but piercing flight (with the Ozik Code shaft I have in it), smooth and accurate, holds greens - it's my 190 yard club.

g25 7 wood is stupid good, I dropped it as mine was ordered in strong at 20* and it was too close to my 5 deep at 18.5

I now go 3 deep, 5 deep, 22h and have an Apex 25h incoming

The x2 hot stuff is amazing. I hit some great shots with my 4h yesterday. One shot was 156 uphill into a 3 club wind, choked down 2" and hit a low fader. Two holes later downwind I hit a high draw onto a par 5 from 230.

I could not knock down my G25 hybrids as easily and that is my only knock on a 7w, harder to hit lower when needed compared to a hybrid. But a 7w is also much harder to hook and generally much better coming into a guarded par 5 green
