I think that @Soloman1 is on to something with the gin of choice as a before dinner supplement.  When cruising, our BD supplement has traditionally been Dubonnet with lots of ice and a twist of lime.  Have never had one at home...

Quiet in the Grille.  Must have scared everyone off with my self "incognito" portrait.  

 

A couple pics from today's trip around the links.  Beautiful morning, comfortably warm temps.  Played OK, nothing to get excited about.  Shot a 43 on the front, then lost whatever mojo I had going.  Starting the back with three successive 6's (grrrrr!).  Had 4 missed putts from ~4 feet during the 9.  Righted the ship somewhat the last 3 holes on the way to a 47.  It is what it is.  

 

Some course pics.  The par 3 10th has a certain Augusta vibe to it with Kearsley Creek winding its way around the hole.  Played at 137 yards today.  Yanked my tee shot left of the sand trap, leaving a short sided lob back over the trap to the pin.  Whacked it across the green.  The last pic doesn't do justice to the slope in the landing zone off the tee.  Dogleg right par 5.  All about sufficient length off the tee and position to leave yourself a second shot up a hill towards the green.  Large trees and bunkers guarding the green.  Was on in a GIR, but 3 putted from 50'.  Tough a** hole, really have to play position.  

 

 

Playing greenies on the day.  The last par 3, the only one I got on (although another was just on the fringe).  Playing at 128, hit an 8 iron to about 8' pin high.  Felt I had a good chance at the cash.  (Missed the birdie putt BTW.)  Three groups back, Mikey scored an ace!!  First one ever.  The shot was on full view of everyone, evidently one bounce, a short roll into the cup.  Didn't know about it until they reached the 18th green.  He lit up the course today, shooting a 2 over 74.

 Today is the 3rd anniversary of my return to golf after 30 some years

 

Shot an even par on the front nine of my home course ( thunderstorms were on the way )

 

Birdied holes 1 and  3 but unfortunately gave them back on  5 and 9

 

I walked and heat index was over 100 so celebrated with a couple of Rolling Rocks and a nap with my Frenchie when I got home

Indeed!  Always nice to be present when an ace is scored.  I have been working on at least two occasions when aces were potted.

Raining here today.  Was supposed to play in my regular Thursday men's league tilt, but will likely take a pass.  Have a medical appointment earlier this afternoon, so don't need the added rush.

 

Nothing to report golf wise.  Pretty sketchy play of late.  Yesterday was a real drain for some reason.  We're noticing the humidity more so than usual since returning from BC.  I have a couple of small landscape projects to complete and will likely focus on those over the course of the next week or so.

 Just an FYI , but if you get an ace , both Callaway and Titleist have nice awards

  My first ace was with a Callaway and they sent a nice wall plaque

  Second was with a Titleist and they provided an engraved bag tag

Good point.  Do know that he bought new TM irons couple months back.  I'll look up their CS number and relay it to him.  Mikey's pretty laid back, doubt he'll pursue it.  

 

Another bud had a HIO a couple years ago.  The course provided a "suitable for framing" piece of paper denoting the course name, date, hole number, and signed by the pro.  With this in mind, I went into the pro shop and asked if they did anything similar.  They did not.

Hugo Boss have an agreement with England Golf that for any HIO's made during a registered club competition, Hugo Boss will provide that person with a free watch. We have several older members of our club walking around with watches more expensive than the clubs they earnt them with lol.

The club I worked at gave out a small HIO trophy.  A dust collector that likely would eventually make its way into a storage bin with other sentimental items.  The photo and having your name on the wall is worth more than the knick knack I would say.

You know reading this and this is going to sound strange---- In all my years playing golf I have never had a HIO on a regulation course. I have had 3 Albatrosses on Par 5s. Now on the course my old man ran we had a Par3 course also ( Longest Hole 95 yards no traps etc) I had 198. Lots of people said WOW but they do not realize how many rounds I played there. Played it from when I was 5 years old until I left there in 73. Played it with everything from a cut down 5 iron to a 56 wedge. Tried the last 3 days it was open to get the last 2. Did not do it. My Old man wanted me to keep a notebook with dates and info on each one and what I shot for the score. I still have that notebook somewhere. Up the street from me at the Executive course and Par 3 I have had 5 on the par 3 course. Up on the North end at another course they own I have had 4 2 in the same round in a shootout one night.

Someone told me long ago I had used my HIO luck on the Par 3 courses oh well

I've never had a HIO. NEVER, in over 40 years of golf. I've witnessed dozens and come as close as one-freakin'-dimple- on more than one occasion, but never been able to get it done. As Stu mentioned, I've had 3 Albatross and never saw any of them go in. But hey, that's golf.

Nope.  I did have one singular shot once on a Mr. Booker's lighted Par 3 from ~50 yards when I was a youngster.  But I've never considered it to be a "real" HIO.  Close a couple times.  Nearly dunked one in on the fly a few years ago.  Slight mark on the edge of the cup, went into the hole, slammed the pin square, then ricocheted 12' straight back.  Promptly missing the birdie putt.  Then last year came close from ~110 yards.  The buds were watching on the adjacent tee and said the ball curled away from the cup at the last moment.  Felt it was pic worthy.  Made the putt.  

 

Think my chances for an albatross is now 0%.  As that entails getting there in two.  I don't sniff being on a par 5 in two anymore.

No HIO here either. Have one albatross at a course around Kentucky Lake. Closest to a HIO was a 7I, to a 145 yard  pin. Took a hop, hit the pin and ended up less than an inch from the hole. Have got a lot of golf in the last couple days.

Next week looks fantastic, with low 80's every day, no rain and low humidity. Us guys in the north are gonna have some nice weather for a while !

Used to be a pretty solid wedge player, both full swings and with touch shots.  That skillset seems to have abandoned me in the past couple of seasons.  I honestly am getting concerned when I have a SW in my hand and need to take a full swing.  Never seem to catch it flush anymore and often thin the ball across the green or even worse.  I can take what should be a relatively straight forward up and down for par from perfect position in front of the hole and turn that into a triple bogie on the club's tough finishing hole with sloping green on top of a hill.  I'll bet that I've averaged close to a 5, season long, on that long par 3. 😖

One of my three eagles ever was in a scramble.  Used my drive, hit my second onto the green about 50' from the pin, then putting last, drained the putt.  A skin was won.  Been counting it for 20+ years now.  

 

These days, likely have a better chance for eagle holing out form distance than rolling in a putt.  As that requires being on the green in two.  Maybe play from the most forward tee on select Par 5's?  

 

Consider a birdie mention worthy to the "usual suspects".   Them:  "How'd you play?"  Me:  "Meh.  Did have a birdie on 6 though."

I've never been good with the wedges, in fact sometimes I felt like it could go anywhere even half shots. However, I recently bought a used Titleist DCI wedge which has more weight closer to the hosel and now its a joy to hit a wedge. I've taken it to the range and I can already tell my hc will be dropping. It seems I have a handsy swing and all the toe weigh they put on new irons anymore makes it difficult to get the club open for me.

 Tried playing from the senior tees on a  nice Donald Ross course I can play off season- you gotta be accurate as 100 year old Bermuda rough doesn't look scary but it is thick, thick thick

 

Greens were being aerated  which I think really helped because I needed to concentrate more to get close to the hole

 

Ended up shooting a 78 ( 8 over )

 

Coolest hole was a  365 par 4 where I have to lay up as carrying a creek running across can be tricky

 

Hit a 4 iron off the tee and then hit a 7 wood to 3 feet-- birdie of the week !!

<Shutter>  You are me, I am you.  Executing the most simply pitch and chip is an exercise in futility.  Just looking at the shot  gives me a case of the yips.  The other day, attempting to hit a basic chip shot onto the green resulted in the cursed double hit.  Not once, but twice!  Thank goodness it's no longer a penalty stroke.  Right there, all i have to do is chip it onto the green.  Only salvation was it wasn't the bladed screamer across the green.  

 

Couple weeks back, went to a range with a short game area.  Did nothing but practice short game shots for 1.5 hours.  Felt I was getting things worked out, was feeling kinda good about it.  Next time out for reelz, was like I never had put in the time.  Very frustrating.  Easily throw away 5 - 6 shots per round by failing to execute a basic chip/pitch shot with any degree of effectiveness.  Watch the decent chippers in the group go about hitting these shots.  They don't fuss with setup, weight position, hands, etc. etc. They simple see the shot and hit the shot, without a whole lot of contrivances.  Sometimes close to the hole, sometimes not.  At least they hit the damn ball onto the green.  Very envious with the apparent ease with which they execute these types of shots.  

 

Tee to 30 yards of the green, pretty good all things considered.  From that point in, become a basket case.

I putt from everywhere I can and do a lot of chipping and pitching with 7-9 irons. I only use

the high lofted wedges from the sand or thick rough around the greens.

 

I've learned to be realistic about my practice habits; or lack thereof. Some have the natural

talent but for most of us it takes hours and hours of practice to acquire and then to maintain

the skill to be consistent with high lofted wedges from various lies. I'll go practice from time

to time when it's cooler outside but when the heat arrives I tend to play only and not practice.

 

As mentioned before, elevated greens are the #1 course difficulty we encounter and when

we miss; especially short side, it seems like the high lofted wedge is the only option for

getting the ball close to have a chance to save par. My attitude about that these days is

mainly to avoid carding a big number and just get the ball on the green. A putt for par from

30 feet I can live with cause likely I'll make no worse than bogey most of the time.

 

For us recreational part time golfers it's the doubles and up that really kill our scores. If I

can get through an 18 hole round making no worse than bogie, that's a good round for

me.

Concurrence with getting a putter in hand as soon as realistically possible.  No hesitation with putting from 15'+ off the green if there are no obstacles and the turf is not excessively long.  I'll whack away with much better chance for a successful outcome than chipping with an iron.  

 

I don't use a lofted wedge other than for shots that require their usage.  Sand, the high lob due to elevation, or over an obstacle short sided.  Strangely, consider myself a decent sand player.  A shot that doesn't fill me with trepidation.  The same distance shot off turf around the green, either a massive divot chunk or bladed.   If I can take a full swing with the 54* SW (~75 yards) I'm usually OK with that also.  Directional errancy aside.  

 

It's those touchy feely finesse shots that are so troublesome. What should be a simple chip/pitch onto the green with a 9i or PW depending.  Not shooting for the pin, simply getting the ball on the putting surface.  Anywhere.  Totally messes with my head.  I got the yips.  

 

Recent example.  Good drive to position.  A nutted 5 wood to exactly where I wanted to land.  About 40 yards out, the entire green to work with, a simple chip/pitch over a small mound onto the green.  With the slope funneling towards the hole.  Instead, bladed screamer through the green, down a slope, OB.  Drop, hitting 5.  Chunked.  Then another "chip" back across the green.  Two putts latter, walked off with a 9!!  Holy crapola, WTF was that?  A possible birdie opportunity descended to a quadruple.  Took two holes and a beer to unwind from that one.  

 

Such is the nature of things for the average hack golfer I suppose.  Nevertheless.  Should have whacked away with the putter if I had a do over.  Couldn't have been any worse.
