Not sure how I ended up here in the I&A forum but some good stuff here!  I too was looking again at Monte's no cast vid and reading about his new video as well. I noticed that I was starting to do the hang on from the top with the hands moving out too soon and the arms moving down too slowly.  As I see it, Monte's move tries to speed up the arms as seen in the videos that Conrad posted.  I hesitate to post on instruction but this vid helped me with this problem with the thought of straightening the right arm from the top (casting?) which brings my hands down and not out. Ignore if this is not for you. All this Monte talk and maybe he will pop in and set us straight.  Now what's for dinner?

I can't recommend Monte's stuff enough, I was even lucky enough years ago to have a lesson with him and it very much worth the time. 

 

As others have said, Monte doesn't have a philosophy but instead parameters that he believes a golfer needs to fulfill to play good golf. The NTC video you posted is a major part of this and is a clever, concise method to enable a golfer to get their left wrists into flexion and to keep width on the downswing. Both key factors in enabling a squarer clubface and prevent the handle yank move. 

 

Any of Monte's videos are exceptional value for money but the NTC series is greatly complimented by the efficient swing series.

Well yesterday County Champs Foresomes proved a difficult days golf. 

 

With my recent poor form I was happy to see some instance improvement from my lesson on Friday. There is some stuff to work on but the immediate results bode well for the future. Sadly however the driver still seems to be the weak club in bag, so much so that I feel uncomfortable with it over the ball and while swinging. It might finally be time to investigate into a replacement. 

 

The wind yesterday was averaging 25mph with gusts into the mid 30's. The golf course we played is an inland links course, there's only one tree on the property, a lot of gorse and the rough was grown to knee deep. We started well, until the 9th when my toe hook drive found water, but with the location of the hazard, entry point and flag the drop point was only about 70 yards forward of the tee. My partner then pushed his 3 wood into the wind and found another water hazard. We are now hitting 5 with 140 yards to go. We covered the distance in another 3 shots for a triple bogey 7. It was at this point that the round got a little weird, the next 6 holes contained 2 birdies, a shank, a drove green with three putt and a slam dunked bunker shot. When we got the 18 we were already tired, a little confused over whether we were playing well or badly and ready to get out the now heavy rain. Sadly 18 did not prove kind. 3 balls found the water on the hole and a 5 over par 10 was carded. Unsurprisingly our 15 over par 87 placed us quite far back in the field but no where near last. A very solid 5 over in the afternoon (fifth best score of the day) saw us climb the leaderboard finishing 10th overall. 

 

I'm now going to try and avoid spending the day looking at drivers.

Thanks to all for their insights and comments. Philosophy may have been the wrong word. Techniques a better one?  Consensus seems to be MS NTC has merit.

Okay.  This is where I get lost with instruction, especially instructional videos.  Too much technical jargon, to much detail that just clutters the mind.  Do this, don't do that.  It would have been so much easier to say:  keep your hands inside the ball on the downswing.  When I look at the adds on the side panel it's like there's a whole industry out there trying to teach people to swing the golf club in what appears to me to be different ways.

 

Anything that I've gained from watching instructional videos has been fleeting at best.  I need eyes and hands on.  Pointed instruction that is catered to my particular physical abilities and shortcomings.  You can't get that with a video.  You also don't get the feedback that is necessary to correctly ingrain improved technique.

 

It has been a long time since I had any live instruction.  Time to give it a try again.

I will always attest that live in person instruction will beat an online lesson which beats youtube instruction videos. 

 

The main reason being what you alluded to - specificity. Instruction has to relate to and be poignant to you and only you. You can look at what the best players do in there swing but if it isn't relevant to you it won't help nor will it help if not implemented in the correct way and the consequences considered. 

 

I personally had this issue, I had a lesson two years ago where the pro wanted to change my backswing. He wanted me to go from a traditional toe up position half way back to the more modern club face angle matching the spine angle. (This is not an argument over which is correct). I had the one lesson with him and went away working on this position and implemented into my swing. The problem was that with no monitoring or concept of the impact if would have with the rest of my swing it had bad results. To maneuver my wrists the way I deemed necessary to get the clubface angle correct was not the correct way to move my wrists. While the clubface angle was good, the clubhead had moved behind me along with my arms and the top of my swing had become too much behind me. To hit the ball, I had a big lateral slide and flipped the club head at impact. This was inconsistent. 

 

My lesson last week was excellent as the pro focused on fixing this backswing issue but very much with the view and creating an understanding for me what the knock on effects would be and what I was trying to achieve in my swing by making the change. The steeper backswing, more open (not open) clubface going back would mean that the downswing would need to change and so would the unhinging action through the ball. Without this understanding I would not be able to accept or make the change as the poor results when I don't match it all up would put me off continuing.

Another interesting round today made all the more memorable by the heat and humidity that we played in -- 34°C and 75% humidity -- made for a really wet afternoon...

 

Despite my rant of this morning, I did watch most of the video that @scotee was so kind to share.  I don't remember the details, but the main point was to keep your hands inside the ball as I had indicated upthread.  That was my swing thought for the day.  Nothing else.  It seemed a bit weird at times as my attention was drawn away from the ball being the target to making sure that my hands were following along and imaginary line about half way between my toes and the ball.  Call it beginner's luck, but it seemed to work.  I hit the ball much better today with far more centre clubface contact, straighter flight and higher launch.  I still had about 4 miss hits, but the rest of my shots were very pleasing from  quality of contact POV.  I was quite pleased with the results from a simple change and consistent swing thought.

A while since I posted here. Vacation times, and unfortunately not all that much golf. Some rounds here and there, and enjoying The Open and some other tornaments on TV. Didnt see much of the olympics golf being mostly on the road. 
 

The swing is not really improving, need to get more golf on the weekends. Some good advices from pros, but still too much getting   Suddenly outside in, flipping or whatever mischief is the root cause of my long tilme problems.

 

Otherwise, a decent summer weather wise up here, you never know what the summer weather will be up here. Some lazy days, but a lot of house fixing, and helping parents and kids out. Parents getting old and kids moving out and around.

Raining here this morning.  Supposed to end by 9:30 so should be good for men's league.  Didn't play yesterday due to the heat.  DW not up to such things.  Ended up being a lazy day.

 

Went to the local craft brewer in the afternoon to pick up a few cans of their new sour IPA that I tried last week at the local farmer's market.  The place was a zoo!  Who heard tell of that at 1:45 in the afternoon on a Wednesday?  Methinks there are lots of people not working content to collect COVID benefits.  Everywhere I go there are help wanted signs.  The current social experiment that is taking place in this country is not going to work!!

OK Conrad, I had to go back to the "Badlands" again for work and yesterday had the opportunity to play Elkhorn Ridge on the south side of Spearfish, SD. It was a 95* day with a 15 mph cooling breeze and this place is simply enjoyable. You're not going to walk it as it takes over an hour just to drive from 1 to 18 in a cart. It's really spread out.

 

 

This is the Par 4 7th hole. Its around 4* downhill and while measuring 365 plays to around 330. Anywhere past the 150 marker will hit a downhill area and run to within 20 yards short of the elevated green. The red buildings past the green is a real working ranch and you can see the freshly baled hay in the meadow past the house and barn.

This pic is the 13th. Par 3 carved out of the side of the hill with a creek running behind the green. It was 177 playing 164 around 6* downhill.

 

The short video is a panoramic view from the tee box on the Par 5 12th. Great hole that gets skinnier as you get closer to the green.

 

Admittedly I'm not a photographer nor videographer. Hopefully they will suffice for my obligation to the Grille brethren and give you an idea how cool this place really is. If you're out this way you need to give it a try. 🍻

You're having entirely too much fun Nitram.  Traveling can be a grind but setting your feet 

on a tee box, no matter where you are, makes you feel right at home. It's like....ah.............

 

I hope you keep sharing pics and videos with us. I wish now that I had taken the time to

take pics and videos at all the places we played on the road. I did have a shoebox with

all the scorecards in it but someone else has it now. All I have left is the memories; which

are great but are fading with time unfortunately.

Yesterday afternoon, around 3:00, s.e. Michigan experienced severe thunderstorms. As of this evening 550k are still without power. Including our house. A wind sheer event with estimated wind speeds of 80 mph occurred in our immediate vicinity.  Viewed pics posted on the local FB group of 12 utility poles in a > .5 mile stretch snapped.   Like in two. 
 

We were 275 miles away, planning on going over the bridge to the Soo this morning. Another 100 miles further. Instead made the decision to head home about midnight.  Get the generator running, access damage Lot of limbs down, nothing that can’t be dragged to the back, lucky all things considered. Saw a number of trees down arriving back in town. Where they had fallen across our road. Currently 4 crews working on planting poles on the main road stretch. The restoration of power is currently estimated for late Saturday or Sunday. 
 

A little disappointed, the Mrs and I were traveling with our grandson and he was having a great time. But really the only decision to be made.  Return home and TCB.

As I . Some states can’t pass up “free” money from the feds. The only problem is that free money for programs dries up after a few years, then it’s all for the state to continue. State of Illinois never refused. When Chicago got Rod Blagojevich elected, he would put anyone with connections with little experience but  a money donor as  the head of departments. Then he demoted what was there but they did all the work. It was laughable. Added a new layer of management.

Every time I hear someone on YouTube say that the more you hit down on a ball, the more spin you create, I want to reach through the monitor and strangle them. That's the problem with YouTube -- anyone can say anything and pretend they know what they're talking about.

 

(Hitting down doesn't create more spin. Speed and club surface characteristics between the grooves creates spin.)

There's a lot of truth to that statement.  I can remember on more than one occasion listening to a fellow (or gal) tell a really good story about something or other and then they'll say something that I know is false.  I find myself immediately asking internally; are you stupid or just deliberately lying?  At that point I tune out.

 

I don't think it's a co-incidence that those situations are almost always unsolicited.  Someone just has to offer up their "knowledge" on a subject.  I don't know whether it's self-aggrandization or they're trying to work an angle?  Could be a little of both.
