Over in the Classic Golf and Golfers thread it is very civil with a lot of knowledge on classic clubs and golf in general. Mostly other old farts like me discussing old clubs and old school golf. The only other threads I venture into are the WITB threads if some of the club hoes I keep up with post something new.

My big question here is--- Why should he care if you wear an Apple watch or a 25 year old Timex? IMHO people like that have no real life and are a waste of good breathable oxygen.

i knew a guy in south florida long ago who was known as “the 7-11 savant.” he would show up for weekday money games in a silk shirt, chains and street shoes.

 

he’d bet everyone (usually about 10-20 players) and lose to everyone every day. he just wanted to get them into the card games after all the scorecards were matched and settled and the liquor flowed.

 

he’d murder them at gin, poker, whatever. he’d leave with a bundle bigger than a folded lululemon tank top. he’d been banned from every casino in vegas.

 

his nickname came from his job. he had to work in the evenings at a 7-11 because the irs caught up with him and he needed a wage they could garnish. he was not a cheat. he was a savant.

sure enough. We go to PE class and I hear “ fight fight “. We had doors that went outside to a courtyard those days. That weren’t locked. Ever. They had went out the back and were squaring off. The small kid came at Scotty with some sort of flying kick.  Scotty caught his whole body.  Carried him 4 feet and deposited him in a trash can. And put the lid on it.  And said “ take that back to your king fu teacher “. 🤣.  I swear that happened.  And nobody ever said a word to Scotty. The pe teacher never came.  And from that day on , if my best bud from school or I sees someone get hit , it told off , one of us will say “ take that back to your kung  fu teacher “!!!! 😜. And we will both roll and laugh.  
 

I have no idea what became of that little dude.  Scotty runs a heavy equipment service , clearing land etc.  and hes  still as duh hu as ever.    I have more. That’s just one of the cleaner instances

LOL reminds me of an old Mr. Truck Stop Gene Tracy joke. Those in the know do not shudder I will keep it clean.

This little old guy was in a bar minding his business drinking a beer. This guy came up and hit him with a Karate chop told him that was Karate from Japan. He came back in again and attacked the guy at the bar and told him that is Ju Jit Suy from Korea. He did a couple of other things to the guy announcing where they came from. The guy got up and left and the antagonist took his seat at the bar. The other guy came back in and knocked him cold as a cucumber with a tire iron. He told the crowd that when he comes to tell him that was a Tire Iron Sears and Roebuck made in the USA

Old Eastwood Golf course in Charlotte (now gone) was the gambling mecca in the area besides at my Old Man's course.

The owner at the time had a sign painted that said

"Gambling Money Has No Home"--- My old man besides running the course was a bookie and gambler. I have seen him with 50K in his pocket one day and the next day not have enough to buy a 25 cent Hot Dog. Now I did gamble on the Golf course and backed Pool players some. I never played cards or bet ball games or shot dice. My old man would just as soon bet you $1 or 10k.

One day he really pissed me off. I was messing around with a Pro Stock Drag Nova for a brief while. I went to the strip one Saturday. He wanted to come along and "help" Now this came from a man who could not jack up a car and change a flat tire. I thought WTH? and was being nice and told him come on lets go. I made a couple of warm up passes by myself and he asked when I was going to race someone? I told him that those were shakedown passes to make sure I had no fluid leaks or something loose. He looked me straight in the eye and said I should have done that before I left the house. He had no clue. I showed him how to use the garden sprayer into the radiator to cool it down after a run and that was his "job" since he wanted to "help" I went and made a dial in run came back in and he was gone. Looked up in the stands and he was up there with a regular bunch of guys that bet Like a Dollar a round on the races. Now I was new to drag racing and launched on my first run too tight and broke the rear end. A wrecker pushed me in and up on the trailer. He finally came down and was hot as a match. Said he lost $1 betting on me. I told him so what? I just junked a $1200 rear end. It never registered on him at all.

HA! My best buddy when I was in like 7th grade ... his dad was a trucker. And he had a whole collection of Gene Tracy tapes. Which we found.

I knew old Gene. He was an actual truck driver for Thurston Motor Lines out of Charlotte. He was actually from Gaffney SC. He started those jokes on the CB radio at first then started doing them at like Adult clubs in Charlotte. This guy named Stereo Joe was a hustler and a half. Joe set up and rented sound equipment for venues in the area Plus he was an all around hustler un licensed pawn broker and out right loan shark. He could get you anything you wanted at any time you wanted it. Jerry Bledsole an NC writer and author described Stereo Joe's place in Charlotte as "sopiscated but still a junkyard". Gene tried to record at the infamous Arthur Smith Studios in Charlotte but Mr Smith would have no part of his trashy language. He got in with Joe and they built a recording studio in one of Joe's buildings and cut 8 tracks. Gene on his travels sold them to the Truck Stops and they made a killing. Of course Gene quit driving a truck

In his older days Gene hung out at the Broad River Truck Stop I 85 exit 98 between Blacksburg and Gaffney I think they got old Joe for tax evasion in the early 80s

I know how to play cards but no idea about how to bet so I just went and played dollar slots..,

I finally find the groom playing craps. I have no idea how craps works other than there’s a “shooter” throwing dice 🎲 and people bet on it. 
 

The grooms money is dwindling, I see, and then this new shooter takes the dice 

 

Hes a pimp! And I mean I think he was an actual pimp! He all dressed in red track suit, gold chains, got two…ladies one on each side. He starts rolling and hitting big!

 

I tell me boy, bet it all! Bet it all with this guy!

 

So what happens? My boy bets but not as big as I told him. He wins but not that much 💰.

 

Then he loses it all and ends up at the “War” table playing like $1 bets 🤣

Now I’m going to tell you Stu. That made me laugh out loud.  Everyone over a certain age, or having been raised by folks over that age knows, “ sears and roebuck “ was serious business.  And you said both. Not just “ sears”.  🤣

The funny thing Stu is I still don’t know, or care, how to use it. It tells time and I can link it to the 18 Birdies app to get distances (which I vastly favor over my buddies lasering every shot). As I’ve said before, I don’t really need to know if it’s 175 vs 179 to the hole.  That could be my 6 iron, or my 5, or maybe a flushed 7.   It buzzes sometimes when I get a text but I don’t know what to do with that. Or really care.  I just later look at my phone. 
 

Before that I had a Casio G shock. It had a jillion features. The only one I could remember was how to change the time zone.

some folks really into watches. i’m not, but can appreciate things with a function, like your apple one. i haven’t worn one for years. that’s why we have phones, right?

 

disclaimer: i do have a fancy schmancy rolex datejust with diamonds on the face. don’t hate me. you couldn’t tell by looking at it, but it’s 30 years old. it was more of a fishing lure when single and out cruising clubs and bars. anyone want to buy a fishing watch?

 

had a sales guy with an apple watch. we were meeting with a big name prospect and every 20 seconds or so, he’d look at it for some notification from twitter, instagram, text, whatever. I excused us from the meeting for a minute and told him to take the damn thing off.

 

his obsessive-compulsive thing with the watch was so ingrained, he looked at his bare wrist a few times.

 

the species has been wearing jewelry forever, so i’m cool with whatever someone wears. except if we’re in a meeting…

I run hot and cold with mine. I’m wearing it now, and it has its merits, but my nerve sensation isn’t “right” on my L arm and it gets irritated wearing a watch, so I wear it on my R wrist. Eventually I get tired of it in the way and banging on stuff so I put it away for a month or so, then pull it out, put it back on, rinse and repeat. 
 

I got it to use for golf GPS too, but the battery does not last long enough for a prime time round of 4h or a few minutes longer. That’s no good, so I’m a rangefinder guy again.

Weird, I can walk 36 and it works till the end. I can’t tell you how much battery is left as I don’t know where to find that. I just plug it in at night 😀🤓

 

My kids like to tease me about some tech things. I usually reply that some things I don’t care to learn about but I run a highly tech oriented business and do just fine there. Plus long before they became Mac and iPhone experts I taught them how to use a spoon.

Too funny - I use my Garmin watch in exactly the same way. I got it because using the laser was a pain and I just wanted to glance at my watch for yardage. And I finally figured out how to turn that buzz off.

I am not a watch guy, really don’t like wearing one and used to have a pocket watch while working. So a golf watch is not for me.

 

I am not a gambler either with the exception of a few small bets with friends on sports. My latest bet was with a friend on whether Tiger would make the cut at Augusta. It will cost me a drink that I would have bought anyway. I was not disrespectful of Tiger. My take was that he would have to WD for health reasons given that the course would beat him up physically. I was saddened to see such a great player finish last out of those that made the cut.

A couple of my friends like the Garmin. 
 

I grew up on a course that had 150 yard bushes. If they weren’t dead or removed. 
 

In many earlier rounds in Scotland or Ireland there were no yard markers. And often my caddie wouldn’t even tell me the yardage. He’d just say, hit your 7 laddie.

When my parents passed I was bequeathed with a pocket watch my great grandfather received for working on the railroad, engraved and personalized.  I have never used it, but when I am looking for something else and it pops up I ALWAYS open it.  I don't know why, I just have to.

I love poker and we always have a $5 Nassau in our group of 12 or so.  Always low stakes. We do go big on holidays with “double holiday stakes”.  😀.

i miss analog yardage markers - red, white and blue sticks, bushes.

 

i have calibrated eyeballs and usually within 0-5 yards of a laser. gps is good because you get green front and back distances. need that if you’re not a hacker.

not that there’s anything wrong with being a hacker…

I have the SE, the most basic Apple Watch. You have the one I should have purchased. 🙂
