It's easy to call someone like Lowry, who doesn't play primarily in this country, a random Joe. Doing so doesn't take into consideration, he won a European Tour event as an amateur, a WGC, and has the respect of his playing competitors.

It's also easy to forget Ernie Els was a "random Joe" when he won the US Open at Oakmont in 1994.

'Random Joe' is basically a euphemism for 'Not American.'

These greens are f***ing stupid. I understand the idea of punishing bad shots more than a regular tournament, but when great shots get penalized because of the asinine greens something needs to change.

Dude also proved his cajones in the most recent Ryder Cup. Calling him a random Joe is just ignorant.

No, it's not. He's 29 years old and has 3 wins (one win in the last 4 years). He's missed the cut in 4 of his last 8 majors. He's ranked 41 in the world. When it comes to PGA Tour level players, he is just an average Joe.

I understand Vancouver81's point. Being from the Appalachian Mountains, it is difficult to wrap my mind around a course within this mountain range not having trees. For me, it has nothing to do with how the course plays. Purely aesthetic.

That is exactly why they started planting trees following Fownes death in 1950, they didn't really hit hyperdrive with em till the 60's. Fownes and his son wanted the greatest links course on American soil. End of discussion.

The members decided for aesthetics.

Then following the 1994 Open the USGA said "get rid of the trees and rebuild the bridge if you ever want another USGA tournament" and at first the Bois huffed and puffed and wanted a "good faith gurantee" that if they did both they would get an Open in the early 2000's and the USGA compromised by giving them(and my club, PFC, as co-host) the '03 Mens' Am.

And so by early 2003, roughly 20,000+ trees were removed and Stan Druckunmiller wrote the check for the bridge.

I've Played the course with the 20,000+ trees and without em-

I prefer as is-

If I want trees, I've got my place, lol

And if you want trees and ya ever get through the Burgh, call me, and I arrange for ya to Play 6900yds of em :)

Enjoy the finish :)

My Best,

RP

I would love to visit Oakmont. It has to be one of the more unique layouts in the world. Nothing derogatory intended. It's vastly different from anything else within the Appalachian Mountain range.

Is it me, or am I the only one tired of hearing about 'The Members' and what they want!

It's not just you.

Rahm is going to be an exciting player to watch the next 15 years I fancy

Yep, very good player. Unfortunately he goes to the wrong school. :)

Pray tell, what's the cutoff for OWGR and number of wins before a player makes the transition from average Joe to not an average Joe?

If Lowry wins today his age, OWGR and number of wins are all more or less the same as average Joes Justin Rose and Charl Schwartzel's were when they won their first majors.

Kokrak putting up the hill (on #2 or 3) to within 3 feet of the hole then it rolls 30 yards back. That's goofy golf. If the USGA think that makes for a good golf course I have a putt putt course with a clown that they would love.

I agree 100%. That`s stupid.

....aaaand it happend again......and again....

I'm waiting for someone to putt it beyond the hole and then have it roll back past the pin, back to their feet.

Oh No, I didn't take it as that because initially I didn't like the links "look" because prior it had that eastern look with all if the trees which I love.

Then I went to Ireland and Scotland and Played true links and it was incredible.

THAT is golf.

You have to manufacture shots and have a wide arsenal of shots and swings. I spoke to Tom Watson about it after my trip and he said he had the same "epiphany" following his first British Open.

Now granted, Oakmont doesn't have the sea swept winds however believe me, when that wind kicks up, you'd better be able to flight your shot down and be able to hit run-up long/mid irons and low traj wedges.

Then I loved it.

It just takes getting used to, though my Bro prefers the trees.

I understand fully your thoughts and they are shared by most.

All the Best,

Richard

In the end, only three things matter~

How much that you loved...

How mightily that you lived...

How gracefully that you accepted both victory & defeat...

GHIN: Beefeater 24

Did Holly get a** implants? I don't recall her having that much luggage in the trunk.

My wife, no clue who she is, said what's up with that ba-donk-a-donk?

Yep. Sometimes average Joes win majors.

Edit: And sometimes "less than average" Joes win majors.

Wired. Seems like an unusual amount of hole-outs from the fairway this week.

Yes if only your boy Spieth could win them all....now that'd be a perfect world.
