I played Twin Lakes the other day and it was in very good condition. I generally am influenced highly by the condition of the putting surface, and the greens at Twin Lakes were very good.

course is so good right now, for the amount of play it gets the tees and fairways are in pretty stellar condition too. at $60 peak rate too its a great deal compared to some of the others in the area

shot my best score ever there yesterday. Links/Woods, Gold Tees, an even par 71... made 5 birdies and an eagle. managed to finish bogey, double to not break par, typical lol

Am I the only one that despises Cherry Creek in Shelby Twp? Haven't played that course in years because I just never cared for the layout and how it played. Gave it another chance today but to no avail. I really just don't care for that place.

To each his own, obviously. I absolutely love Cherry's layout. Some long 3s, some short 3s, some long 4s, some short 4s. Greens are much better the last couple of years than previously, as it seems like they have stopped overwatering. In fact, playing there Saturday, weather permitting!

I was an OU member until this year. Got enough friends to get out there whenever I want. Played Shard last week. That course is so easy compared to Katke, I'm always surprised at the rating and slope, which is nearly identical to Katke.

Sharf is way easier off the tee. I find the front nine tough to score on, but the back gives alot of opportunities to shoot a good score.

I prefer Sharf by far though. It has such a cool up north feel to it.

I played Timber Ridge GC in East Lansing yesterday. The course is in great shape, and a good golf test. Greens have fast pace to them, fairways are great with plenty of character. Personally, a great course.

Hey Guys,

Looking for a new instructor in Metro Detroit. The head teaching professional at my club left and hasn't (and won't until at least next spring) been replaced. Anyone have recommendations? Would ideally like someone who also works during the winter and has a trackman.

Not sure of your specific location, but I like Larry Hamilton who is at Twin Lakes. He has a studio in Downtown Rochester, and last time I saw him he had a trackman.

Does anybody participate in GAM golf outings/tournaments? They seem to have interesting golfing events.

Just played in the GAM Four-Ball today. Also played the GAM Championship and the Mid-Am earlier this year (I usually try to qualify for the Michigan Am or the GAM Championship each year -- GAM worked out better for my schedule this year). I haven't done any of the Golf Days, but their tournaments are really well run, and worth checking out if you're looking to play some competitive events (whether it's gross or net tournaments).

yes I have played in a few gam golf days this year and enjoy the idea of playing a private course here and there. They are sometimes quite challenging with the character built in to them, such as elevated greens, fast green speeds, and other things. Plus I play by all the rules and it really let's a golfer know what their real handicap is. The course usually wins in my case, but nonetheless it's a lot of fun. Hope you did well in the 4 ball.

Yeah, those guys dusted everyone. Couple of guys a few years out of MSU, it sounds like. We shot 69, and we made 3 bogeys on our best ball. We burned a lot of edges. I personally had a putt that stopped right on the edge of the hole (par putt) that didn't drop, and left an eagle putt about 4 inches short in the jaws. We both had other good looks that didn't drop. We didn't have 61 in us, but we easily could have been 3-4 shots better.

I would also recommend Larry Hamilton. Helped me out tremendously and always go back to him for tune up lessons when my swing gets out of whack. Also has a trackman or flightscope. Does lessons year around.

I thought the greens weren't that great, as compared to last year. I played in the net am last year and they were the best greens I had ever putted on. Seemed a bit shaggy this year.

I'd agree. You could tell they'd been punched about a month ago, and they were a little slow and hairy. I liked the course overall. I grew up 5 miles away from there, but the tournament was the first time I'd ever played it. We decided to sign up right before the deadline the week before, and neither of us was able to make it up to Lansing for a practice round.

  • 1 month later...

yeah i did... our group finished -11 on Estates to Links... we just could not get any of the longer putts to fall... we actually three putted a hole! haha

The 3-putt is pretty hilarious. We shot -17 on Woods/Estates. The guys we were paired with shot -20 or -21. They won our flight and were heading into the playoff when I left to go home and continue drinking :)

Moved down to Harrison Township from Grand Blanc a while ago and I am still looking for a cheap executive type course to hit up when i can (young kid and work, I don't have much time/money). I used to go to Heather Highlands and play their short course so is there anything like that around the area? Right now i just go to Bello Woods for a quick/cheap 9.

Anybody know anything about the new Club Champion on Woodward? It’s between 12. &13 mile across from Golf and Tennins and right next door to that Discount Golf place. No mention on their website when they are opening.

I looked them up and their prices for fittings a competitive but check this out from their faq...

Do fitting fees get applied to cost of the golf clubs?

We wish we could, but we can’t apply fitting fees towards the purchase of golf clubs. The Trackman’s, the SAM PuttLab’s, that enormous wall of heads and shafts that we constantly refresh, it’s an enormous effort from a cost standpoint and we’d be out of business if we didn’t charge for our fittings. An easy way to think about it is this way: Any golf store that can give you a free fitting doesn’t have the right technology or the right people in place to do it properly.

Surprise!

For a full fitting, that makes some sense -- if you do a full-on Trackman or SAM fitting at Miles of Golf or the Launch pad, they don't apply the whole fitting fee toward the price of clubs (I know Miles applies $50 toward the purchase of clubs if you do a Maxx fitting). The thing that I see as being a bigger issue for them is that they're stepping into a market with two very established top-of-the-line fitting centers, which both allow you to hit balls outdoors so you can see the flight of the ball, and in that location, I have to assume, you're hitting indoors into a net. If they're not pricing competitively, I think they'll have a hard time steering much business away from the places that are already here that offer a better value and experience.

I know the fitter they hired Nick and he is VERY good. One of the few I'd trust to personally fit me. They do a great job, I think they will be successful in this market.

anyone know how to get GAM to add Combo Tees to their handicap portal? is this a function of the golf clubs themselves? The Majestic at Lake Walden has some pretty solid combo options on their scorecard, but you have to input as an unlisted tee

I was chatting to the pro at Twin Lakes about possibly adding a Black/Gold combo, as the difference between the two tees is nearly 500 yards for each 18 hole routing. would be a welcome addition. Ive screwed around with tees before and just inputted them as unlisted tee using the USGA ratings adjustment but i was just curious

When you input, is there a rating on the card for the combo tee? If so the course should be able to get that done with a quick call. We’re in the process of adding a couple combo tees at my course, we have a 700 yard difference between white and blue.

at The Majestic there was, so i can make that call.

for any combos you make yourself USGA provides a pretty good adjustment chart based on the distance change

We're working with the Gam and the tees will be rated on the card and an option when posting scores, that's why I figured if it had a rating it must be easy to add to the course portal for posting.

thats what i was kind of asking too... ill get with our pro and get with GAM if he is interested in the addition, hopefully so
