Rating Chun's -21

Golf channel is making a big deal out of the -21 she shot this past weekend. Lowest total in a major by a man or woman. What say you... Is it as big of a deal to the golfing public as it is to the golf channel? Does it compare the -20 shot by Day or Stensen in a major?

I don't see why not.

Sure, it was soft, but those conditions were not easy. Hit the ball in the rough, and you paid. Distance control to the greens, along with chipping and putting had to be difficult with all that water. They played that front 9 in some decent rain.

Fantastic display of golf.

Is it a great score? Yes, impressive as hell. Is it comparable to Stenson and Day? No... Cant compare mens golf to womens golf. Two different sports. If the pga tour players played the exact same course as her last week -21 would probably be a very good week for her. But the differences when women golfers play the difficult pga tour setups would be huge. Long rough on the lpga tour isnt long rough at all compared to pga tour. Hard/firm greens on the lpga tour isnt hard/firms greens on the pga tour. Still impressive as hell dont get me wrong but its just a different game playing the hard pga tour setups.

I enjoy watching the women play. But honestly I wish these comparisons never came up. Imo the games are totally different and as such there is no comparison. It's like softball versus baseball. Similar game but not the same.

The only comparison can be dominating performances which can be across sports. Which is more dominating-Tiger at the 2000 US Open or an NBA teams run through the playoffs? But you cannot compare even one -21 to another. Different course, different weather, different stakes. There have been -12 winners more impressive than -20 so the number under par is meaningless.

Great score, but she was only 4 clear of the runner-up. In my opinion, the true scoring record is all relative to the field, which is why Tiger at Pebble in 2000 is the current yardstick for me.

Sunday night baseball. That she's not qualified to analyze baseball because she played softball.

You're right hate is not the right word.

Oh her? She is way more qualified to analyze any sport that Stephen A or Bayless so I have no issue with her. I was not comparing the analysis qualifications. If she hit 80 home runs in a season in softball it would not be comparable in any way shape or form to a MLB season. That is the LPGA to PGA.

How many broke par in Round 4 at Evian? Not many. Even defending champion Lydia Ko struggled.

If you've ever played at the Evian Resort Golf Club at Evian-les-Bains, which my wife has played before, you'll know it's 1500 ft above sea level, hilly and sloping which makes for a challenging round where ball striking and accuracy, especially off the tee are paramount. Sure the men's game and women's game differs but let's give her all the credit due because with the exception of a single double bogey, she was pretty flawless from tee to green and led at every round and considering it was pretty horrid conditions on Day 4 which made the course play longer.

If that score had been posted at an Oakmont or St Andrews then there'd be some credibility in the comparison but Evian? No.

There were changes made to the course post it 'becoming' a Major so the average winning score prior to Major status at -15 isn't truly representative but in three year post Major status the average score had been -13 so not a lot has changed.

Getting to -21 is impressive nonetheless but it's not like it's unprecedented around that course, Juli Inkster did it in 2003.

I love the Evian, it's a great event at a beautiful course, and I couldn't care less if they want to call it a Major or not but Women's Major records should be held seperate from Men's, they just don't play the same tough course set-ups so there is no comparison.

I have yet to see anyone discuss her score to field average. Think of some of the best Major finishes i history; what they have in common is a large gap between the champ and average. Tiger at Pebble, henrik/lefty this year, watson/jack in the duel in the sun. All of them separated themselves from the field by a wide margin.

I think this would really interesting to see. First, how it compares just using majors for the women. And then how it compares for men and women.

While agree I the womens records should not be compared to the mens records the course set ups are difficult for the womens majors just like the mens. Not all of the mens majors are played on "par is great" layouts. Jason Day -20? The Open this year?
