Buying spare sets or clubs?

I really like the entire bag right now.

But, I have never thought of buying a spare set.

Is there anyone who did it and use it actually after worn out the first set?

I haven't done it with irons before, but I've definitely done it with wedges.

I was very fond of the first generation of Spin Milled's and had a back up, ended up using it all the way until the rule change. I'm currently doing the same thing with my current SM5. I love the bounce/grind combination so I don't really want to change that up anytime soon.

I hope I do lol. :) I really like my bag right now and with Nike out of business I found a pristine set of irons at a great price. They are waiting for the current set to get to beat up, happens playing here in the desert, and that way I do not need to try to find a new model of club that works for me as well. I have a spare driver head as well. That one seems silly but paid so little for it out seemed like a good idea. :)

Why not have a spare set? I live in Japan and, since joining this site, I've picked up set after set for nothing. Pristine used clubs, left and right. I've got to a set that I really like - MR23 CBs and I have a couple sets for when I travel or when people come to visit. And I have another set here for craps and giggles - TN87s with some wierd a** Diamond Royal Precision shafts. It's fun to try'em out and you just never know what you'll find, a la Lee Trevino.

Revently I picked up a raw Miura Special edition 58' and a raw Tourstage X-blade 52.' The Miura is the nicest feeling wedge and the ball just went where I wanted it too and the feeling, I just can't describe. I also hit some really nice shots with the TS. I already had perfectly fine J15 wedges 50' and 56' and another 60 degree and now I've basically opened up a spot at the top end of my bag, though I only really carry 12 or 13 clubs.

For years I played the same set and I knew my gaps, but I'd still hit that certain yardage where I didn't feel comfortable. Playing around a bit we can find something that just fits better. I've got a wedge in my bag now that I'm just can't wait to use from 100 and in. If I stuck with the set I was 'happy' with I might never have found 'the one.'

I don't know why you would need spares besides wedges. They are really the only clubs that wear out.

I have bought some spares. But, I really have not needed them and sold them off. Woods can have the face crack occasionally, but that is extremely rare. Who knows if the backups are even the same as the originals. Most likely the quality control is off and they won't even be the same loft or lie etc.

I have a backup set. It comes up as a hot button issue now and again on here.

I have my main reasons I think they are good and would recommend anyone who is financially able to do it.

1) My main set was stolen a couple nights before a tournament once when I stupidly left them in my trunk and had my car stolen. I got the car back with no clubs.

2) When I travel I take my backup set that has older clubs in willing to accept losing, getting damaged or having them not show up haha.

3) My backup set is used as kind of an experimental bag. I put hybrids in there when they were new on the scene. I'll put cheap eBay "golfwrx legend" finds in there to try. They gotta earn a spot in the day to day bag though.

4) My dad visits regularly and doesn't bring his clubs when he comes to town. I have a set he's always able to use when he's here.

I've never actually purchased a duplicate club though. I like trying different clubs out too much. I've had wedges that are the same model and different lofts though. I would sometimes adjust my bag depending on course setup and drop one if necessary

A backup set can double up as a guest set. I guess most Golfwrx members have some sort of stash of spare woods, wedges, and putters on top of their usual gamers.

3 sets of Irons/wedges, not identical but similar, all forged Mizuno (54/64 - 5 - 900Tour)

Putter, pretty much, one is a WHP, other is a works, but both #7 Tank with same grip.

3W and Hybrids have identical, brand new backups in my office. This is a tough spot in the bag, find something, stay with em.

I have used a Yes! Tracy putter since 2008. Several years ago, at a golf store going out of business sale, I was able to pick up an identical brand new version that I keep in my den, in case the original gets stolen or broken. Has a sign on it that says " In case of emergency, break glass ".

Pretty much stuck with Titleist since the original AP2 release 8 or so years ago. As I buy the new model driver/iron/wedges the previous series stuff goes in the backup/range bag. Current bag is 915/714 AP2/SM6 and the backup is 913/712 AP2/SM5. Any older irons/wedges than that I will try to sell but I like to keep the drivers and especially putters around.

I'll also keep stuff around that I consider classics or just plain beautiful. I have some Miura 501, Titleist 735 and Mp14 irons that are not going anywhere.

I'm a little bit different. I sent a spare set to my inlaw's house across the state. Driver, irons, wedges, hell even a bag. The whole nine yards. Space comes at a premium when the whole family packs up and ever since I fell in love with my Apexs, my TMs (that I play great) are sitting there in my father in law's garage. We see them enough that they get played and I dont have to worry about anything happening to clubs on the trip.

My biggest issue with this is that by the time I wear my clubs out (with the exception of the wedges), something new might be out that I like even better and then I have to figure out what to do with this spare set I have sitting around that's not worth that much anymore. I also have an addiction to trying out new equipment when it comes on the market and I wouldn't have a good excuse to do that if I already had a perfectly functioning spare set ready to go. It wouldn't work well with my club ho'ing mentality.

I have a spare set and another spare set.

I have two of the same driver, 3w, and putter (on top of all the other clubs I have).

I usually burn thru a wedge or two every year.

I travel a lot and don't want to have to worry about losing my primary set of clubs.

Similar here. Three bags.

Everything is the same in the three bags with the exception of the irons.

While all 716 versions, one bag has AP2, the other CB and the last T-MB.

I don't mind changing that part up a little.

I had a backup set of MP-33's ready to go when my original set wore out. I don't have backup wedges but if my current ones are still available I'll buy them.

4 putters, 4 drivers, 9 woods, and irons as far as the eye can see....I tell myself, and others, it's so my dad and brothers can all come at once without clubs and we can all play, but I'm just a straight up ho. I love hitting different clubs....

You'll never know when you'll need 2.5 sets of the same clubs. One might decide it needs to take a bath on a hot course. One might developed osteoporosis and basically crack, could be on a hot course. Sometimes, and I've seen this, trees tend to really talk s*** to irons and the irons go all crazy and attack the tree, kinda like a mini pinscher attacking a rottweiler? Usually on a hot day on a hot course...
