I played the new 1x today and wasn't really impressed. It seemed like it really had a lot of spin and didn't do too great in the wind. I wasn't even impressed with the stoppage on the greens. Really disappointed as I wanted to live it, but just not impressed.

Bought a dozen new ProV1s and ProV1Xs today and got four free Chrome Soft Xs from the Callaway rep. Ready for the next warm day to go out and test them all out on the course.

Please let us know your conclussions. I have been playing V1X 15 because of the higher spin and control with short/mid irons and around the greens compared to V1 15 (for me) although I like the softer feel of V1 more. I played the first reléase of Chrome soft (2015 I think) and loved the feel (I am a balata guy, probably cause of my age. LoL) but not its consistency around the greens but would like to see how the new CS X version compares to the 17 V1 and V1X.

Thanks

I had this posted on another thread but realized I didn't post here as well:

"I did a little testing myself this afternoon, although I didn't have the luxury of a Trackman for real numbers. I traditionally play a ProV1x, have a driver swing speed around 105-110mph, and play to a 15, although it's been dropping and is probably a little high by playing a links style course that is not forgiving if you're outside the first cut of rough.

It was 55* and sunny here today so I decided to get out on the course with a sleeve of new ProV1s, new ProV1xs, ChromeSofts, and new ChromeSoftXs. I started on the putting green and all felt pretty similar to me on the putting green. There's a slight difference in feel between the Titleists but it's not that one is bad. Same way with the Callaways.

Next I went to the chipping green and hit two of each of the four balls in a variety of pitch and chip shots. No two golf swings are the same, but I felt like the ProV1x and the ChromeSoftX checked up the best around the green. But the ProV1 wasn't far behind. Around the practice green, I liked these three better than the ChromeSoft.

Then I went out to the course and got 16 holes in before it got dark. I didn't really have a scientific approach to my testing and sometimes hit two of the same ball, sometimes hit two different balls off the tee, sometimes dropped a second, different ball next to my ball to hit two approach shots, etc. Again, I think that I liked the ProV1x and ChromeSoftX the best, but all four worked for me. I think the ProV1x is slightly longer than the ProV1, although the gap is probably closer than in 2015. But I'm used to the ProV1x and know my distances with it.

I did have one memorable shot where I hit the regular ChromeSoft from 110 with my 50* Vokey and the ball landed right next to the pin and spun back at least ten yards to the front of the green. So the ChromeSoft also had plenty of spin around the green.

I think that the Titleist balls may be closer to each other than they were with the 2015 balls, but I think I liked the ChromeSoftX better than the regular ChromeSoft. I'm going to try to play again tomorrow afternoon, but long story short, I am not sure if I'm good enough of a player to really tell the differences between the two Titleists and the ChromeSoftX with my January swing when it's 55*. My playing partner was scratch golfer and he's a diehard Callaway guy and plans to play the ChromeSoftX this year, but he also really liked both Titleists and didn't think they were drastically different.

Long story short, I think all four are great balls. If Titleist runs another special this spring where it's buy 3, get 1 free, I'll probably load up on ProV1xs. If they are full price and the Callaways are $10 cheaper per dozen, I'll probably get the ChromeSoftX. I just don't think you can go wrong with any of these."

And since this post, I was able to play a full round with the new ProV1 and loved it. I think it's just as long, if not longer, than the previous ProV1x I was playing and it's softer around the green. I'm going to try to play a full round with the new ProV1x on Saturday, but if I had to pick right now, I'd say I'm going with the new ProV1.

Thanks for bringing your review to this post.

It confirms what I more or less expected regarding the Chrome Softs. The regular one is great soft feeling but higher compression core probably provides more consistency.

Although I understand this is very subjective, how would you rate from 1 to 10 the four models regarding softness?

As for the Pro V1s I always thought that the softer the ball the more spin but I discovered the opposite with the 2015 version which seems to be confirmed by the new 2017 model as you and others report. I look for máximum control around the greens and short irons that´s what I switched to the Pro V1X 15. Now looking forward to trying the 2017s and also the CS X.

I thought I'd throw my two cents in for those needing help on deciphering how the 2017 models perform. A little about me, I'm a +1 handicap, 104 mph swing speed. I've been a Pro V1x player since it was introduced. I spin the ball a lot, so the x has always appealed to me as it was supposedly the firmer feel, lower spin option.

When the 2017 balls were unveiled, I was intrigued with the new regular V. The x over the past few years has felt to me like it has been getting spinner. It's nothing for me to spin back an X 10 feet or more with a 9 iron on down in my hands.

I have played two rounds with the new V and I absolutely love it! Feels the same to me off the driver, flatter flight and just as long. Iron trajectory is a little more penetrating and it just stops and drops. Short irons are great, my ball doesn't spin back near as much. It's great knowing I can hit my number and not have to account for excessive backspin. Short pitches and chips are a little less spin too, but the ball still grabs and checks up. Putting with the V was also pleasant as I forgot how soft the V felt when struck pure.

To summarize if you have been an X player because you liked the lower spin and flight, you definitely need to try the new '17 V. I'm glad I did. It's just going to take awhile to get used to seeing a black number on my ball now!!

I can confirm what Oilcan says. Just played a full round with the new X and I think it may spin too much around the green for what I'm looking for. Had several shots today where the ball landed and spun back 10 feet, a couple of which spun back off the green. And this was in soft, damp February conditions.

I don't understand why there is even an X version in 2017. Titleist's own video on their website says the only difference between the two is that the X flies higher and is harder feeling. So basically everyone should be playing the regular V1 in 2017.

Their marketing has confused things somewhat. There is a clear difference between the two balls, both offering different benefits to different types of players. It is a shame that Titleist have not been able to communicate this. I believe the X is still the most played model by the pros, I have only heard of 1 player swapping, there may have been more but it seems most have stuck with what they normally use.

After two rounds with the 2017 ProV1 this weekend, I want to post my initial thoughts.

Ball flys great off of the driver. For the last two seasons I have played 2015 ProV1x and the 2017 ProV1 is just as long. But I have changed drivers so take that info FWIW.

Mid/short Irons were right in line with my distances, but I did notice a little less backspin. I played on wet greens and my ball was consistently within 5' of my ball mark (This is great in my opinion). Nothing hurts worse than landing ball a foot from cup only to spin back 15'. Full wedge shots into green still backed up around 5'.

Putting the ball feels perfect. Not too mushy and not hard/clicky at all.

Really like it right now, and plan to play this season, unless the TP5/5X is better will test as soon as I get my hands on it.

Hello,

If anyone is interested, I've played three rounds with the new Pro V1 and I think it's a good ball. That's pretty much it, lol. Nothing I write below will add more value then that, but what the hey...

For reference, I'm a 2 handicap with a driver swing speed of 103-106, not sure what my current iron swing speed is, but I don't like to swing very hard with my irons. I'm a natural high launch player, but like to hit 3/4 punch-ish shots into the green from around 130 meters and in. Played the Chrome Soft most of last year and was happy with it, but actually switched to the 2015 Pro V1 at the end of the season because I preferred the way it reacted on pitches for me.

I was afraid that the new Pro V1 would have too little spin for me on irons and pitches, but I'm glad to find it's just fine for me. Honestly, I can't really see a big difference in spin between the 2015 version and the new one with my irons. At least not yet after only three rounds. I backed up short and mid irons a couple feet and long irons rolled out a few feet, which was normal for me with the 2015 Pro V1 as well. Backed one pitch up about 25 feet today, but it was into the wind and I may have swung a bit more aggressively than I usually do.

Driver seems good and in the wind I think it's just fine too. I have not A-B these with any other ball and have not gotten on Trackman or anything, so I know the information I'm sharing here is very vague, but at least I have nothing to complain about, and that's the good news here. I have two sleeves of the new Pro V1X that I haven't tried yet, that I bought because I was afraid the new Pro V1 would have too little spin for me, but since it doesn't, I'm really in no rush to try the V1X. I will at some point just for fun, but I prefer low launch and softer compression, so doubt the V1X will be for me.

Cheers,

Max

Not really. Some folks need higher launch and more spin. That's why the X was made to begin with. Before the urban myth was started that the X was a low spin ball. It's absolutely not. Nor has ever been.

Agree on the high launch and more spin -I am one of those that needs that - what 2017 balls do you think best compare to those attributes of the X - wanted to test it fairly - appreciated

The x is lower spin off the driver, just as titleist has ways plugged it. The current versions have the regular prov closer in spin off the driver but not quite as low. X has had similar short game spin to prov1 but still had less spin off full swing iron shots in the last few iterations. The original x was a lower launch, lower spin ball compared to regar prov1.

im sorry but that as always been incorrect.... v1x has always been higher launch and spin ..always... how else would you get the higher launch ? its because its spinning... the exceptionis driver... 2015 and 2017 ball are very close on driver spin.... but with a full wedge you cant tell me that the x isnt substantially more spin that the V1... just noo contest

chrome soft X is a very good comparison .... for me B330S is too with the exception of the soft feel the 330S has....

As has been pointed out by others in different threads, the dimple patten primarily creates the launch angle off the driver. Higher spin off irons actually creates lower launch. I agree with you in the past 2 versions, x spins more off full wedges.
