Fitness on LPGA

Where are the results from the constant working out videos we see on instagram and twitter from these players? Of the "top" players Lexi is the only one who wins regularly that I would put in this "gym rat" category. Is it more detrimental to your game than it helps?....if for no other reason other than it takes practice time away?..

Look at players like:

Inbee

Shanshan

Amy Yang

Lydia

Ha Na

Mirim Lee

Mo/May Jutanugarn

Charley Hull

Lizette Salas

Those are names that come to my head, none of which are physical specimens yet they all have won or win regularly. Just kind of tired of the Ryan Otoole, Belen Mozo workout videos they constantly take of themselves working out. Cute, but doesn't mean lower scores...hit the range.

I would guess that the majority of top players spend regular time in the gym, they just aren't instagramming it. Looks can be deceiving. You can't always tell who's the fittest and strongest just by looking. Minjee Lee is a top player and glancing at her you'd never guess that she could deadlift a subcompact car. Sei Young Kim is like 5'3" but most likely can kick your a**.

Lots of good reasons to work out and not carry around an extra 30 pounds other than your golf game.

Personally I am not a big fan of social media. They said my impression has always been that women are more active on it that men. True? More of at "look at me" mentality.

Then again I'm a guy and could be completely wrong.

Why would someone posting a workout video on social media bother anyone? Nothing wrong with promoting a healthy lifestyle and playing golf at the same time. BTW, Belen Mozo's Instagram is probably 50/50 with gym videos to driving range videos ratio, taking out all the personal photos etc. Plus these ladies have images to uphold with the non-golf sponsors they have, or sponsors that they may want to attain in the future.

Agree, everybody's their own brand.

On Instagram, I follow girlsthatgolf, and its all about them prancing around, hitting balls in their bikinis, and my pet peeve, hitting balls into the ocean (seinfeld reference). Probably quit following that one, but there are some cool women to follow, like Shinae Ahn, Michelle Wie and a few others

Id bet the vast majority of them work out to some degree, they just dont make it part of their brand by posting all over Instagram about it.

IMO, fitness for LPGA players is very different than it is for PGA players because none of the ladies are trying to get all buff. Tiger, Rory and DJ all had times when they were gym rats and all of them fought injury. IMO, too much strength can be detrimental in the golf swing because often with muscle mass comes a loss in flexibility and more stress on your joints.

very few do the cigar, beer and fat workout anymore even on mens tour.

Knows the secret to the golf swing to own it.

Without considering the performance benefits of working out, I think it should be noted that even professional athletes are human and need balance in their life. Working out may be a stress release for them, or perhaps give them a sense of accomplishment. Whatever the case may be, hitting the gym likely improves the quality of practice sessions due to a better (refreshed, happy) state of mind. Not to mention that life after golf must be a consideration for many LPGA tour players. So in my opinion, they should keep hitting the gym if it suits them to do so!

Wie posts on instagram her practice sessions nearly every day. And what makes you think those that do post about their workout routines aren't spending "enough" time on the range?

People respond differently to time hitting golf balls whether they improve "fix" things or not.

And Inbee has said she loves doing yoga and pilates.

For all the defensive responses this post isn't a knock on anyone and was just merely an observation of mine... To be honest I'm a fan of the more care free pure talent "john daly/Shanshan approach" if you will than the gym rat anyway. I'm just observing that working out and being in great shape apparently doesn't translate into lower scores. (like it has on the mens tour, most top ranked men are very fit)

I absolutely think the weight room hurt tiger woods, and i think its going to cut Jday and possible Rory's careers short... I do not see a similar trend in women's golf which is a good thing...

If you are strong a belly will not stop you. Genes aint fair. Like Monty, JB or Phil. Or Jack. Ariya do not need to do what Belen has to do to get it as long down the fairway.

Inbee does not hit the ball country mile but she has got the game, on the course in general but mostly on the greens.

The gym will help but it's neither necessary nor adequate.

Tiger was the one that got golfers out of the Pub, but he was definitely not only about biceps.

I don't think jack Nicklaus or Billy Casper were thought of as workout fiends. Quite the opposite, but both had hall of fame careers that lasted well into their 60s. Something that can't and won't be said career wise of the king of fitness and workouts..Tiger Woods. Probably more cases of being a gym rat being detrimental to a long career in golf rather than prolonging it..

Jack Nicklaus played every major sport in high school and could've easily played football at Ohio State if he had chosen to. Not saying he was a gym rat per se who hit the weights, but he wasn't exactly curling beer cans at 17 years of age either.

False. Jack gave up football after 8th grade, not even any consideration he could have ever played at OSU.

He was a good basketball player and honorable mention All Ohio as a senior, but he wasn't going to challenge Havlicek or Lucas. Did enjoy fraternity basketball.

Golf was THE sport for Jack, but he was well rounded.

The equivalent of Tiger looks like a linebacker??
