Taylormade P790 Irons

Anyone compare to JPX 900F? How is the look at address? Look pretty close?

I owned both and the 790 is a better looking iron. Not as blocky looking and less offset overall, especially in the long irons. I think the 790 will look longer in the blade length due to the height being shorter but they are actually roughly the same size.

I tried them again now that full sets are available not just the 7 iron fitting piece (which tells nothing as everyone can hit a 7 iron). They are great looking, not that big looking at address, slightly wider top line but not unacceptable. Overall beautiful club that is easily the best looking thin faced iron and it is totally forged. Everything I’ve looked for. Result, the same the feel is dead, the distance is fine, with the longer irons there is s clicky sound like the Steelhead XR Pros. Compared them to AP2s, PXG, Epic Pros, AP3s, Honma TW737P (all except AP2s sort of thin faced distance improvement clubs). AP2s, Honma, Epic Pros, PXG, 790s, AP3s were the order according to feel and sound. Disappointed as the 790s are hands down the best looking club of all the mentioned/tested clubs...

It seems that feel is such an individual thing... for example if I took that same list (discarding the Honma's which I have not hit) it would look like .... PXG, 790, AP2, AP3, Epic Pro. The 790's definitely never felt dead at all to me. Struck in the center they are soft and muted but they feel springy... off center they get much crisper but still feel springy. Group evaluations are a good thing no doubt but it's also pretty apparent that they can never replace first hand experience.

That said I've had that same feeling with other clubs, i.e. seeing something that looked so good to my eye and then when I hit it I was just bummed that for one reason or another they just didn't suit me at all.

I agree with your evaluation on feel DPavs - on center strikes the feel is very soft and the ball explodes off the face. I continue to be very impressed by the 790's.

Good feedback.

I currently play PXG irons, tried the 765 (lasted 9 holes), and just got a set of the P790 irons. I just had time for a few swipes in the simulator upon opening them, but The PXG feel much better IMO.

But, man the P790's look darn good.

Yeah I need to see these in person. So far to me they remind me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry has the "two faced" girlfriend. In one light she is stunning and in another she's hideous. In that pic in the bag I like them. Other pics not so much.

Spent a lot of time hitting the 7 iron with the Recoil graphite at the local shop...Great looks, long (mostly because of cranked loft I imagine), very forgiving, very workable and not a bad feel. Feel is probably lowest on the list, but all around it's tough package to beat. I wish the lofts were more normal-ish, but oh well. These will sell like hot-cakes! When they drop in price I'm all over it.

Looking to order a set of LH P790's with Nippon Modus Tour 120's and it says they wont ship til 11/27. Anyone else have this same problem? I feel like a LH set of irons shouldn't have a 2 month lead time.

It's not the LH heads, it's the Modus 120 that's causing your delay. Looks like the LH heads would ship out 10/9 if you selected a different shaft (RH heads for 4-PW are still listed 11/22).

I assume the Modus 120 is a popular option right now. Hopefully they get more stock sooner than 11/27, as I was likely going to custom order the P730 with the 120.

I had a hit of the P790 the other day I also hit Mizuno JPX 900 forged, MP 18SC, Callaway Apex, Nike Vapor pro and also the ping. I ruled out the Mp 18 (bit disappointed really loved the look of it), callaway and ping just didn't feel as nice as the the others.

This left me with the Nike, P790 and Jpx. Now I was hitting a 6 iron in the mizuno and was getting the same distance to the TM and nike which were 7 irons which is understandable with the loft differences. The P790 felt really nice and i was able to strike the quite pure and only 1 shank but also loved hitting the mizuno so now stuck between the both of them.

You do know that the loft differences between the 790's and the 900F's is only .5 on the 7i, right?

Also in steel shafts the length of the two are the same.

The JPX900F 6i is lofted at 27* and the P790 7i is lofted at 30.5... so by all rights you should have been hitting the 900F 6i farther. Ergo the 790 was definitely providing you more distance club for club.

I don't know why there seems to be this assumption that the 790 lofts are jacked more than other GI clubs... because they are not. (G400 e.g. is 30.0 on 7i so it is actually .5 stronger than the 790)

I just had someone check the lengths between a standard P790 7i and Mizuno 900F 7i and it is longer by approx 1/4 inch. Apparently Mizuno measure clubs differently? For one, the total length is to the end of the grip whereas with others they measure to the end of the shaft. Not sure if anyone can confirm this?

I thought a grip only added 1/8" to the end? Anyhow, I need to visit the shop again and double check for myself to confirm. It just never added up for me how I could swing the P790 7i 93mph and the 900F at only 92mph when it is 1/2 inch shorter and both with the same shaft. Also, I can't rule out being handed a 1/2" over shaft on the P790 by mistake.

Is that the Approach wedge I see in there? How do you like it?

Are the long irons forgiving? I have been fitted for these but just want to make sure the long irons will be ok!! Coming from Apex CF16

I discovered this as well. TM measures their clubs with grip installed plus they are .25" shorter than the new "standard". My Ping i200's were a full .5" longer. It depends on what you are used to but it is a significant difference. I would recommend ordering to make up the difference.

Yes sir, i like it very much. the yardage on these irons is spot on not flyer or anything like that. ive used the aw many times from chipping, pitching, knockdown and full shot and have a lot of stopping power.

The long irons is forgiving, on miss hit your not going to lose a lot of distance. i have used the 4 iron a lot of the tee, if it is around 400 or less i used the 4 iron no hesitation. as you can see on the bag, i dont have the 3 wood and the 2 hybrid anymore, i park them because of the 4 iron i can used of the tee on some tight holes and long approach on par 5.

i will order a 2 iron once is available and put the KK TX shaft that currently on my hybrid.

I don't understand what it is with taiylor made and the ordering process. This past spring I ordered the P770 and it was backordered more than once they kept delaying the shipment two weeks two weeks two weeks. Very frustrating

Why Is it all the other OEMs 10 can ship timely but Taylor Made can't?

I don't think you will convince anyone who has been waiting for their G400 Driver for over a month and half that delays happen with just Taylormade.

ship date with ctapers says 10/9. but it says "earliest ship date?

They have to have some build time and the ship date is an approximation of course.

Apparently it's the 5 iron specifically that is back ordered. I was told they ship the components they have, and then will ship the 5 iron once it comes in. Really has me on the fence whether to order or not. I guess getting a 6-AW set is better than nothing. Certainly don't want to wait until late November for the entire set.
