I would not get a 790 iron set. I could see a 3 iron or 2 udi otherwise would pass on them.

Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting a combo set of these. P790 4,5,6 P770 7,8,9,PW.

Just wondering would I be better off just sticking with a full set of P790's.

6 handicapper. Awful iron player.

... If iron play is not your strength I cannot see why you would go with 770's. There are those that have said the P790's are not consistent, and for them I have no doubt this is true. But again, the P790's are the most forgiving players irons I have ever used and they are very consistent. As a + index I consider iron play the strength of my game and I would not be playing P790's if they were even the slightest bit inconsistent in the their distance. But they are a distance player iron and that needs to be taken into consideration if you are thinking of playing them.

I, too, continue to wonder where these ideas come from that the P790s are subject to flyers. These irons are extremely consistent, in my experience. I have a set of both P770s and P790s and sometimes blend them, but only for the 8 through pw. For me, at 57 years old, the consistent distance from the P790 mid irons is game changing.

Another round with these, and more massive fliers. 185 out with a 6 iron and I nailed it. 22 yards past the pin. Nice clubs, but I just can't control them.

Waiting on my set to ship, but this is my fear as well. I've hit the 7i on launch monitors and it's been ranging from 190-215 which is too big of a gap. Hoping it was crappy monitors at PGASS

When I was fit into the 790s with stock DG105, I went from hitting my AP2 7 iron 170-175 to 190-205... I knew the distance was wacky but flight and dispersion was night and day. After having these for a few months my 7 iron is actually 185 now. Can't say enough positive things about these clus. Dropped 4 strokes so far and it's mostly due to getting at par 5s in two with an iron now.

Been loving these so far. Still getting distances dialled in, especially when I'm down wind with how high these go.

Loving my UDI after only 2 rounds with it. I'm probably going to cut it to a stock P790 3 iron length just to fit my set better progressively. Seems like a huge jump from the 4 iron to the 2.

Easiest clubs to hit I've ever gamed without sacrificing too much spin. Heigh still gives plenty of stopping power. These are the irons of the year hands down.

The 790 UDI 2-iron and 790 3-iron are possibly my two favorite clubs to hit right now... I cannot believe I'm saying that... :no2:

Feel is very solid, but the accuracy and consistency of distance (regardless of quality of strike, within reason) is incredible! I can't yet see myself playing a full set, but I can say a 4-iron is in my TM shopping cart right now...

Cool story bro

Actually preferred your story saying you hit a 5 iron 185 yards ( I mean 7 iron).

About 15 yards, but I use the 2 more from the tee, which stretches that gap a bit more... 20+ yds.

:busted2:

That's what I'm afraid of... the 730's are my favorite forged blade since the Nike sickness I had (OG blades, VR Pro blades) and I want to keep as many as I can. The reason I held off on going to the 4 or maybe 5 previously was because I wasn't sure if I could flight them low enough. Turns out I can.

UDI 2 iron just kicked out my U45.

Hard to believe that it goes almost as far as my 3 wood and has a tighter dispersion pattern.

Played my first round with new 790’s yesterday and they did not disappoint. The feel of the clubs is unbelievable. Distances were 1.5 to 2 times longer than my old Callaway X-22’s. 6 iron from 165yds to 180yds, 4 iron to 205. The most impressive thing is that the off center hits came out very good and flew great. Only one round in but an exciting start. Well worth the wait to get them.

Gave these one more round. I just want these to work, but they don't. Flew 4 more greens today, then hit an 8 iron on a 167 yard par 3 and stuck it ( that is an appropriate distance for me with an 8 iron). Had a 170 yard approach, he hit the 8 iron, and lost the ball in a creek behind the green.

Glad these seem to be working out for so many, but I find these the most frustrating irons I've ever hit. Will be moving on to i200 or 718 CB.

Anyone having gapping issues after the 790 pw?

my existing gap wedge (s) 50 or 52 are almost 20 yards shorter than carry on pw......

thinking of bending the pw weaker and gap stronger....

anyone else experience?

thanks

... Yup, it was a transition for sure. I play a 52* wedge and at 45* and with a thin face the pw created a bigger gap than I would like. I bent my 5-pw 1* weak which left me with a 46* pw that is a solid 125 and my 52* at 105yds and a 20 yd gap. So now I hit a lot of 3/4 pw's which has actually improved my wedge play.

No gapping issues here.

I play a 50/54/58 setup.

I suggest checking the lie and lofts of the P790 set. Several folks within this thread have mentioned their lofts being off a few degrees.

I got mine checked and only one of my P790 heads was off by 1*.
