I tried the new 718 AP2's and AP3's

I was able to try everything yesterday. Well, I didn't hit the MB or CB because I want forgiveness. I liked the AP2 but I hit it exactly the same as my 745. I was a little hungover yesterday  so I wasn't making my best swings but we got some good data. I decided to do a full set of the AP3. I thought they felt fine. The are just a very inviting looking golf club. You can definitely see quite a bit of the cavity in the 4 iron, but for some reason it didn't bother me. Really good flight for me with these irons. We settled on the AMT Tour White S300. SS was around 91mph, launch was around 18 and spin was in the 5600 range. Carry with 7 iron was 10 yards longer than with my 745 and AP2, 163 vs 173. We were on a TrackMan 4 hitting ProVs.

Hit the 4 iron a few times and it felt great. Avg carry was 217. Another thing was I fell in love with the new hybrids and I'm not a hybrid guy. Feel was stellar and the ball flight was great. Had an average carry of 229 with the 19 H1 which is a great number for me. H2 was about 10 yards shorter in carry with a lower flight. I really prefer the looks of the H1. Overall I had a great time, I would highly recommend doing the Titleist Thursdays to anyone.

Final Specs for me are:

818 H1 Atmos Black 9 Stiff (I was hitting the blue but would prefer the weight and slightly lower ball flight of the Black 9)

718 AP3 4-PW AMT Tour White S300

SM6 48F, 54F and 60S AMT Tour White S300

STD loft, lie and length

Nice!

Is the black Atmos a no up charge shaft like the blue?

All of the Fuji Atmos line is no upcharge.

You are correct! I ordered the H2 19* with the Atmos Red on Friday.

The AP2, CB, MB and AP3 are the same price points. T-MB is higher and the AP1 is a little lower. Just ordered the AP2, AP3 mix set up for $945 4-pw.

Really? What shafts did you select? There is yet unconfirmed speculation about upcharge for PX or KBS at around $30 more per iron.

My local pro shop (who gives me discount) said the prices weren't out in Oz yet but even with discount they thought around around $1300 US (4-PW) without even upgrading the shaft!

A mate over there who is a Titleist ambassador has offered to look into price point, subject to me finalizing a shaft. Maybe Paypal is my friend after all

KBs is an upcharge, project x and project x LZ was not an upcharge currently. They are running $135 a club from Carolina golf sales on Facebook. Full retail is $165 a club here in the states.

What mix of Ap1 and Ap3 did you order, were both in steel and what was the price of each? Really curious as I am thinking about getting a mixed set myself.

I heard the ap3 will have a price point around 1900, trying to compete with epic. Any truth to this.

prices are identical...

Not that I want to hijack Kirk's great thread about testing the new range but this sounds about right. hoot's $945 (above) for his 4-PW is $135 a club & about right with a good retail discount.

We get gouged a bit here.

Can't comment on the Nippon upcharge but if it's not TT AMT or PX then probably yes.

I hope so, even bigger interest if thats the case. I looked at the new Mizuno MP18 yesterday, man the head size is tiny and just shouts "J Arthur" in the high lofts

Lol. Everyone is different but I play the 716 CBs and couldn't believe how forgiving they were when I tested them. For me in order to play the AP2's I wild only want them a smidge bulkier than the CBs.

I have both set's and the heads are all the exact same size EXCEPT the toe of the 7 iron is about 1/16th higher in the 718 than the 716. I didn't measure the 4 iron because I have the AP3 but all the others were DEAD ON the same. One other thing I confirmed today via an inside source at Titleist. The new AP3 is the C16 with different materials. Not that it is ground breaking news but if there was anyone wondering that is the case.

Yeah that was the big thing I've seen in the youtube Titleist videos ect. about the AP2's, and keeping basically the exact same head profile but cram more tech and tungsten into that same head shape and size.

Interesting. I was hitting the 6 iron. Maybe it's just my eyes playing tricks but I don't recall the AP2's being that big.

I had the chance to see a combo set of AP3/AP2. While the size of the 718 AP2 may be identical to the 716, the 718 looked more aesthetically pleasing to my eye. I did not put them next to the 716, but they just looked better to my eye. It may have been the topline or the way the hosel joins the club. Keep in mind this is a purely my opinion and and it's all about the player's taste and preference.

I'm torn between the MP18 SC/Fli-Hi and the 718 AP2/3 right now. So far, I've only tested the MP18's, but I want to try the Titleist in order to do my complete "due diligence". I know I can't really lose either way though! :)

Yeah it always seems a little far fetched that someone changed a shaft or head combo and then writes up that it dropped their handicap index 3 or 4 points.

But I must admit that my Titleist bias aside, these have me pretty excited. And in the past 7 years I've had Cobra, couple of Mizuno sets but never did as well as with the 710's, then 714 AP2's, and I'm just a low teens handicap.

I purchased and played the MP 18 SC this weekend for a round and got fitted for the AP2 / AP3 at TPI so hit them off grass with premium balls extensively. Feel, SC takes it. Forgiveness the AP2 / AP3 combo takes it. Both look great. Just do what I'm doing and buy both lol.

For those that are SO concerned with offset...

I saw a little "cheat sheet" in the Web.com Titleist Tour Van that had all the specs (I know shame on me for not taking a pic). From quick glance the offset of the AP3 was almost dead between the AP1 and the AP2, with progressively less into the wedges. The 9i thru 48º were nearly identical to AP2 and the 8i difference was not visually noticeable. To me, the additional offset in the 4i and 5i gives the look of more confidence for better ball flight. I received my AP3's 3 weeks ago and ordered them 1º weak because of the lower spin which also gives the appearance of slightly less offset as well.

After a couple weeks of play and practice, I've gotten used to the different feel over the AP2 (played since the 710). My typical mishit is a bit in the heel and when then it does, the dang flight is amazing and distance loss is quite less than the same missed strike on the AP2. I'm not a "forged guy", the new sound of the AP3 is different but, if the club looks good and ball flight does what I'm looking for, then I'm good to go. I can learn to love a different sound. Sure I love the feel of a forged club on square strikes, but mishits still feel like crap forged or cast, and club designs can surely be made more forgiving with cast. The new AP3 irons ARE GAME CHANGERS for Titleist loyalists AND for those that have always wanted traditional looks, faster ball speeds, more forgiveness, WITHOUT swinging a shovel!!!

Thanks for the info and review, Sam. There's another (I assume) handy golfer who doesn't necessarily love the feel of the AP3's but can't get past how well they perform.

I spoke to my local teaching pro in passing on the weekend and whilst he's in his 50's with a very smooth swing, he was going to order 718 AP1's. He said the profile seemed noticeably less bulky than the previous AP1 incarnations and he couldn't ignore how good the ball flight and feel were overall. He also commented on how good the AP3's were but was sticking with AP1's.

There is a 46 page 2017 custom options guide on the Titleist website that shows all the shafts available and if there is an upcharge or not for anyone interested in that info.

And some sites (TGW for example) will let you put together a custom order and learn the upcharge for any shaft or grip that's offered.

I haven't checked on my own, but are people seeing AP2 sets in retail shops with the AMT Tour Whites now? Do they have them (for instance, since I am in Michigan) at Carl's Golfland? I presumed that all of the current-stock retail AP2's had the (2016-17) DG AMT S300's. And indeed the specs are different between the first-gen DG AMTs and the new AMT Tour Whites. (Similar 9i weights but transitioning to even lighter weights in the longer irons; more progressive weight differences as it were.)

I've actually learned quite a lot in this thread; thanks to everybody.

Currently playing 716 TMB with AeroTech 85 shafts. Tried 718 AP2, AP3 and TMB ... just hit 7 iron ... could not see any difference in look of AP3 and TMB at address.... both felt very good ... AP2 was also very nice ... I was most impressed with AP3. My 716 TMBs longer than 718 ... Tried several shafts from fitters options ... he didn't have AeroTech shafts available... difference must be shaft!

My dealer has told me that the AP3 are slightly more per club and the Modus is $22

They are all the same with the exception of T-MB and Ap1
