Jack's Rolex

Recommended Posts

I saw this interview on my feed yesterday and clicked on it in a heartbeat. I love Jack Nicklaus and have long admired his Rolex Day/Date. I knew he nearly always had one on his wrist in interviews and photos but didn't know it was the same one every time. I wish Ben had asked him about it's service history. I wonder how many times it's been serviced.

Sadly the yellow gold Day/Date is more associated with drug dealers today than sports titans. I've always wanted one but don't want the negative association that comes with it today. So I went with the tamed down/poor man's Day/Date--the 36mm steel DateJust.

I'm offended by that ?I have the same watch by choice, it's perfect. Gold isn't my style, too gaudy

I know what you mean but it's like Jack was born to wear that watch, don't you think?

Absolutely. It looks great on him.

But if I wore it people would think I was a pimp or a drug dealer.

Thanks for the post. I had no idea it's the ONLY watch he's ever owned and he's basically worn it every day of his adult life.

I can't fathom how much it would be worth at auction.

My dad bought one just like it because Jack had one. Now I have it as my dad passed away far too early at 56.

It's unequivocally my most valued personal possession.

.

Now this is cool!

I go on Hodinkee every morning to see what new articles are posted. I don't participate in any watch forum the same way I'm participating here. I view mechanical watches as small pieces of art and I admire them in that way (even though I'm not able to afford to purchase them).

That was such a cool video. Biggest marlin ever, same watch since 1967, 341 yard long drive in 1963 with persimmon and balata. There is something magical about Jack. WOW!!!

Now if that was a Gary Player video I wouldn't have watched. :D

It's a great story and I'm sure that watch will bring a hefty price at Auction...

But I have to say that isn't what impressed me the most in this video.

Who has the self-discipline to hang onto the same money clip for 50+ years? Without losing it?

Jack has traveled the planet, raised a tribe of children, designed golf courses all over this earth.....and he never once misplaced his money & clip since 1963?

Pretty impressive....oh, that's a nice fish on his wall.

It must go back to his blue-collar, Midwest upbringing. I think that accounts for a small portion of it - the rest is just the fact that Jack is a special human.

Yep, Jack is special. A true family man. Nice guy, too.

He was brought up in a time when the value of hard work meant something.

I thought it was particularly interesting that Jack said he played city-league basketball into his 40's. Were the guys playing him hard or were they nervous to keep the multiple major champion injury free?

I actually don't see how that's even all that odd. I spend a little time every day on Hodinkee, here, and various car forums, as it's a way that I can get my nerd on about those various subjects without having to bore my friends who have no interest.

Yeah, high end watches and golf go together which is why Rolex and AP have so many *brand ambassadors*

Visiting other sites is very normal.

As everyone knows I am staunch member of Jo-Ann Fabrics Web Forum.

In addition, I visit CEA's website about three times weekly. Celery Eaters of America.

We're doing some cutting edge stuff over there with the leafy and base stalk sections that are typically discarded.

So there's more to it than taking those scraps to the compost pile?

Hundreds of uses. One of the founding members, I will call her, "CAROL" grinds the leafy section to a paste and uses it to clean her fine silver.

How many precarious situations could MacGyver gotten out of with just a bottle cap and some discarded celery?

Perhaps he could start by using the bottle cap to cut that mullet?
