Iron headcovers - yay or nay?

Recommended Posts

I never understood the concern over this, if it’s not your bag who gives a rats fanny.

Don't you know most of these people are tour professionals?

I just don’t get it.

I’ve been on WRX less the penalty box one or twice ? and watched this debate for 100yrs. And not ONCE did I understand it. Listen, the argument is it takes time, here’s a news flash those peeps are SLOW no matter what they do. Most of THESE people are so dialed in they are NOT slow players. So what we are left with is stereotypes, personally I could care less if you play at a good pace. BB

Bottom line, if you don't want to golf with me because I use iron covers, it means you are an idiot and I wouldn't want to play with you either.

Perfect example, I haven’t used covers in some time now BUT I just purchased a very expensive set of black 19’ Cobra CB’s. I will absolutely use my handmade leather covers (no moisture buildup open ends like a gun holster) on these until I’m sure they work for me. Hell, until the new car smell is gone probably then I’m sure I will give up the ghost. Until then lump me in with the pocket protectors. If they don’t make the cut I bet the second owner won’t mind that I took the time to protect his next iron set. This stuff isn’t cheap man, this set cost me over $1300 bucks! Do you protect your iPhone? Computer? Guns? Boats? Pick your poison, I certainly do. And while I’m on my soapbox, I’m tired of the analogy tools not jewels. You do realize that a mechanic that’s invested a fortune in his Snap-On tools takes better care of them then he does himself right? I will ALWAYS take care of my things because I see the value in my hard work that allowed me the privilege of owning them. Hey, that’s just me! BB

No, no, no, I get it because I’m the same way with my stuff. I take good care of everything, be guns, watches, car, whatever it is. I worked hard for everything I own, therefore I have a different view. Nobody gave me s***, lol....

It’s just seems like too much of a hassle to have to cover every club after use, though I do cover my driver/woods which are primarily used off the tee where there is more dead time. But I can definitely relate to keeping new things looking new, and would probably be more inclined if I had for example just come into a brand new set of JPX 919s...

It really is zero hassle. Takes seconds to remove the cover and put it in your back pocket and probably saves that amount of time by making the clubs easier to locate in the bag with the large numbering.

Less hassle than taking a headcover off a driver and working out where to put it yet for some strange reason iron covers are frowned on by some who happily use wood and putter covers

To each their own. I bought a set of cobra irons awhile back that came with some free iron covers. I tried to use them but it was just too much of a hassle for me. I would end up just taking them all off when I got to the course and put them in my bag then I ended up taking them off and leaving them there. To me it makes sense for woods as they are painted and the finish needs a bit more care. Same with putters. An iron gets pounded through the turf over and over and it’s gonna show wear no matter what. Then there’s that random pebble that scars the sole and it’s marked for life. I suppose they limit bag chatter and if you’re looking to resale value it might make sense.

  • 2 weeks later...

As irons become more specialised, with coatings and forged faces and more, it's going to just be a reality. Driver head covers weren't that common with persimmon. Putters weren't covered until they became more customised. Irons are just the last of the bunch.

And especially for forgings...

Maybe you don't like them, but I also know guys that are annoyed with wood covers. Their gear looks crap quickly, of course.

It's winter time again and out comes the iron cover go/no-go thread. The arguments are always the same that include taking too much time, they look dorky, etc. If I concern myself with others who use iron covers I am not putting my focus where it should be, and that is on my game. I used to use iron covers to stop the bag chatter and they really had no negative aspect as far as pace-of-play, but the only thing I didn't like is they sort of held in moisture and started rusting some of the parts of the clubhead. I don't use them anymore but if someone wants to use them that's fine with me, I'll be focusing on my game and my next shot instead.

Yes it's all about bag chatter for me as the face and sole will get battle scars. I played with a guy who also has P790s and he looked at my clubs and said he wished he had used iron headcovers as the backs of our respective sets were the same age but night and day condition.

I say different strokes for different folks. Every club has a cover in my bag. After every shot I wipe my club off and put the cover back on. There is no wasted time if done efficiently.

My friend doesn't use any covers and rarely cleans his clubs. When he does clean a club a chisel is required and is time consuming.

Covers do keep moisture in, combined with fertilizers can create surface rust. I clean grooves and dry before putting away until next week.

Just say no [to head covers]

And 'yes' to beat up clubs, rattle, rattle, rattle noise....if works for you, it's all good.

Guarantee I get more for my used clubs than those who don't keep covered.

Math Quiz:

  • Hank the High Capper has new Honma's and likes to keep them covered.
  • Paul the Pro Pretender gets aggravated at his buddy Hank the High Capper due to the extra time it takes Hank to cover his irons after each shot.
  • Hank the High Capper shoots 93.
  • Paul the Pro Pretender shoots 80.
  • Paul the Pro Pretender is clearly the better player of the two.
  • Both players agree covering Driver, Fairway Woods, Hybrids and Putters are OK.
  • Hank the High Capper's heavenly Honma's look so shiny because he takes the extra time to cover them after each shot.
  • Paul the Pro Pretender was on track to break 80 but loses a golf ball on Hole 18 and invokes the full 5-minute allowance to look for the lost ball so he still has a shot at breaking 80.

What takes more time?

A. Hank the High Capper's club covering time of 2.4 minutes per round?

or

B. Paul the Pro Pretender's 5-minute allowance to look for the lost ball?

Answer: Paul the Pro Pretender's single lost ball takes more time.

Added is the extra time is takes for Paul the Pro Pretender's extensive pre-shot routine, practice swings and holding of the post-shot poses.

Note 1: In 2019, the USGA says Paul the Pro Pretender will only be allowed 3 minutes to search for lost balls, but 3 minutes is still longer than 2.4 minutes.

Note 2: The USGA has no rules restricting the time for club covers. Clearly the USGA understands lost balls are more time consuming than club covers.

What Is and What Should Never Be

I’d say a hard no on the iron covers as I imagine they would be easy to lose and annoying to constantly take on and off. That being said, if you have a driving iron, that would seem to be a good idea to quickly identify it in the bag.
