What's your minimum for Hall of Fame

I think you should have 3 majors or the equivalent of, for example:

10 wins = 1 major

4 Ryder Cup Teams = 1 major

3 POTY = 1 major

2 Players Championships = 1 major

2 Tour Championships = 1 major

2 PGA Championships = 1 major

1 Open = 1 major

1 US Open = 1 major

1 Masters = 2 majors

Will have to dissect this further but for now keep in mind that according to your major formula

Palmer has 10 majors (really has 7)

and

T Watson has 10 Majors (really has 8)

Yet both lack a PGA Championship to give them a career Grand Slam.

his major formula is a little more wacky than that

Arnold Palmer

6 majors for 62 wins

8 majors for 4 Masters wins

3 majors for US/ British Opens

1 majors for 6 Ryder Cups teams

0 majors for 2 POY

0 majors for the rest

Arnie has 18 majors!

Tom Watson

3 majors for 39 wins (I assume we can't round up)

4 majors for 2 Masters

6 majors for 6 US/ British Opens

2 majors for 6 POY (yes 6, only the guy with 11 has more)

0 majors for 1 Tour Championship

1 major for 4 Ryder Cup teams (whoops forgot it the first time)

0 majors for the rest

Tom only has 16 majors

Phil Mickelson

4 majors for 43 wins

6 majors for 3 Masters

1 majors for the US/ British Opens

0 majors for 1 PGA

2 majors for 11 Ryder Cups (could get one more this year)

0 majors for 1 TPC

1 major for 2 Tour Championships

0 majors for 0 POY

14 majors

and now for the two you're really waiting on...

Jack Nicklaus

7 majors for 73 wins

12 majors for 6 Masters

7 majors for US/ British Opens

2 majors for 5 PGAs

1 major for 5 POY

1 major for 3 TPCs

1 major for 6 Ryder Cups (Jack needs some rounding up)

31 majors

Tiger Woods

7 majors for 79 wins (ouch)

8 majors for 4 Masters

6 majors for the US/British Opens

2 majors for 4 PGAs

1 major for 7 Ryder Cup teams

3 majors for 11 POY

1 major for 2 TPC

1 major for 2 Tour Championships

29 majors, 1 win and 1 Ryder Cup team made ties Jack

Shouldn't the points be doubled, hmm maybe tripled or more, for a Grand Slam?

with the Masters counting double and the PGA only half, Walter Hagen and Lee Trevino must really hate that system

First I would say you can't get in until you are 50 years of age or retired. Don't like seeing some 40 year old who is still playing have a HOF ceremony. Wait until your PGA Tour days are done and then we will vote you in.

Second, if you don't have any majors then sorry NOT IN!

Third, if you have 1 major you need 25 plus wins on the PGA Tour.

Fourth, if you have 2 majors you are in!

Discuss amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic..... Larry Nelson had the most underrated career , yes or no?

What about Paul Azinger?

16 PGA wins

1 major

1987 player of the year

Overcame cancer

2000 comeback player of the year (first win since 1993)

Ryder cup stalwart

Also revitalized the US team approach to building successful Ryder cup squads this century. If not for Medinah collapse, his model would be 3 for 3.

The Medinah thing keeps him outside my garage.

Medinah was DL3 not Azinger. DL3 used the Azinger pod model that has now become the standard with the formation of the Phil, Tiger, Furyk, Stricker “task force” era.

A player must be at least 50 years old during the year of a given Induction Ceremony (example: A player must turn 50 years old in 2017 in order to qualify for the Class of 2017), or be at least five years removed from being an active participant (as determined by the Tour) on any of the original members of the International Federation of PGA Tours.

WTF is going on in here?

I just popped in here, did a little reading, and wondered the same thing.

I'm sure somewhere in there I read that a tour championship = a PGA championship. Wonder how the players would respond to that.

I believe the PGA Tour, which is the tour players organization, runs the Tour Championship, so I think they want it and their other events to have as much status as possible. This includes the FEC & Players as well.

Makes sense. Especially now with the move of the PGA. Sure seems to open things up at the end of the season so they can focus more on the FedEx cup.

I wonder if that was at all contentious when they (PGA of America and PGA tour) met to discuss moving things around.

I think that move was made so that the FEC playoffs could move up to avoid going head to head (as much) with Football. PGA of America was probably worried about TV ratings ($), fewer options where to play (still early season for Northern courses) and the fact that it will be harder for the 20 Club Pros (to compete early in the year and get their games ready so early in the season).

For golf as a whole, I think the 2019 schedule will be better...the Players is kinda early (March), but then followed in consecutive months by Masters, PGA, US Open, Open & Playoffs.

A lot these responses make it sound like you want a “hall of very good” and not an actual Hall of Fame. I find this to be the case in other sports though too.

Perhaps because we already know who the giants of the sport are. Where would you cut it off then? Just Jack? Just Jack and Tiger. And Snead? But if San is in so is Ben. Oh and Arnold. And Bobby.........

My formula was merely tongue and cheek. I put as little thought into it as possible, like the majority of my other posts on this website. There is probably a good formula that could be created but that’s way outside my intellectual capacity.
