Odyssey O Works speed control

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I was curious if anyone else has experienced any speed control issues with their Odyssey O Works putters? I have an Odyssey 7s that I really want to like. I feel like I can align it easier than any other putter I’ve tried recently but whenever I get on faster greens or greens with a lot of slope on them where speed becomes so much more important I have a really hard time making a committed stroke. It seems like the forward roll the O works insert puts on the ball seems a bit inconsistent to me especially on the longer putts.

I’m trying to be more committed to what’s in my bag this year and not flip clubs around like a regular WRX Junkie but my putter seems just so inconsistent even on strokes that feel really good. It very well may just be me and not the putter since I’m practicing less and less the older I get but I just can’t help but feel like there’s something else to it. It seems like there isn’t a ton of O Works inserts on tour so maybe they know something we don’t? A lot of those guys are using white hot inserts in new odyssey heads or Toulon’s.

What say you? Is it just me or do you also feel like the ball can come off hot from the O Works insert?

That’s exactly how I feel. I three putted three times yesterday on fairly easy long putts. The first time I left it dead on line but about 5 feet short then on the following three putts I hit both of them a bit more aggressively and they came out hot and went literally 15ft by. Sure some of that is user error but I stood over those putts having no idea how hard to hit it and I’m just not use to that.

I thought the insert was fine when I was using a harder ball, but when I changed to the Chrome Soft, I completely lost my sense of speed. It was like a marshmallow face hitting a marshmallow ball and a ten foot putt could be three feet short or three feet long and feel exactly the same.

I like the Exo insert better and hope they expand the number of heads available.

One of my worse putting days in recent memory was with my old 7S. I just couldn't get the speed down on the Streamsong greens. My brother beat me like a drum that day and that rarely happens.

Streamsong greens sound like a nightmare with the O Works insert. Usually I’d love to putt on big sloping greens like that. I like the challenge of havin. To commit to a big breaking putt and having to get creative.

It wasn't good. The greens were really fast and I had a lot of long lag putts that day.

I bought a #7 red O Works without trying it or questioning. I thought how could they do worse than the White Hot, the best insert ever? After 2 hours on the putting green, I felt like I had lost my touch. I was seriously puzzled. I took out my #7 WH and started draining them and at least hitting correct distances. I decided that the Micro-Hinge learning curve was too steep for me. I sold it that day, losing $20 but keeping my game.

This is my dream putter...... crap.....

So because some anonymous posters on a golf discussion post their results with a club your now eliminating it as your "dream putter"?.

You could search a bit and find just as many positive reviews if not more that are negative.

Do yourself a favor and demo for yourself.

For example I'm a died in the wool carbon steel putter lover (no inserts). Just for s&^ts and giggles I borrowed my sons O Works Marxman for a couple of days and spent extensive time on the practice green at my club.

To tell you the truth I was pleasantly surprised. With my preferred ball (Bridgestone 330RX) it had a nice feel, came off the clubface nicely with a great roll, and I had no issues with distance control.

I could very easily play one and may even give this one a shot for a few rounds.

As always in equipment decisions YMMV.

Not sure I am an anonymous poster, lol, I mean at least I don't hide my name. And no one here is trying to convince anyone of anything. But the putter is obviously not suited for everyone, in which case a responsible buyer would go try it out for him- or herself, of course. That said, try the Spider too.

What I said "Do yourself a favor and demo for yourself." He asked for opinions and he got mostly negative responses. Mine was positive. As I said AGAIN "YMMV". Always "try before you buy".

I was being a little facicious. I've been a fan of softer feeling insert putters in my short golf career. I have a $20 coupon to use so I'm heading to a golf galaxy tomorrow to try a few more out and maybe find something I like a little cheaper.

When trying a putter in a store is it weird to bring in my ball of choice to try it with rather than the cheap ones they have laying around?

What you all should learn is that anytime you ask an opinion anywhere...golf, politics, polls...only people with issues and agendas will speak out. They will dislike or they will like, but they will strongly make their opinion definitive. Those who are truly satisfied remain silent and make their voice known only when it really matters. So if you want to reach a conclusion for yourself, go for it on your own.

I was on the negative side view of the o-works insert since I got my 3t in December. I had been rotating putters (because I stink) from a Spider to a Nike origin then finally to a black copper Soto.

All were firmer feeling than the 3t so when I went back to the 3t it always felt like putting with a wet rag.

Then about a month ago I committed to the 3t. Eventually I got used to the muted sound and feel. Now I have great speed and line control using it. Truly believe there is something to that insert tech, just a matter of getting used to it. Love my o-works now!

  • 5 weeks later...

I'm going on the opposite side of this discussion. The 1 wide red S that I have has been the best putter I have ever rolled a ball with. Since the moment I picked it up speed has been perfect. I was playing the Chrome Soft with it and recently switched to the Vice Pro Soft which is even softer then a Chrome Soft. The putter turns perfect in the hands and the ball rolls the same every time.

I'm still convinced that there is a putters are such a personal item that no putter or face will ever work for everyone.

I recently picked up a 1w to try. Coming from a Metal X 7H, the new face feels actually very nice. It's much softer than Metal X, to the point that you don't really hear or feel the impact so that's quite a bit of change for me. However, I didn't really feel distance control was difficult. Yes I do have to hit a little harder than I use to do with Metal X, but it is actually good for me.

Anyway, so far so good. I tried a few times to see if I can go back to 7H but just couldn't putt nearly as consistent so sticking to 1W for now.

Had an issue with the MetalX face being 'hot' sometimes, I guess when dimples locked in perfectly.

On fast putts, try hitting it off the toe intentionally, works for me and my buddies....takes a little practice.
