Cobra '19 News?

Progressive weighting in the AMT shafts for FTB variable length only. For one length, they use all 7i shafts.

This is a pretty big change for the F9 one length. This whole one length thing is so confusing. One minute I hear you are supposed to swing the exact same swing through the set. Now they say you need to swing stronger lofted clubs faster to get the right performance and wedges easier, so they are using different weighted shafts. Who the heck knows anymore. I think they are just throwing crap on the wall with one length at this point.

That's what I thought as well. As a single-length player (Sterling), I value having my specs the same from 4h-LW and I feel that it's helped me play some really good golf. I could get behind the F8 OL having variable lie angles, but not sure about the variable shaft weighting.

All that said, Cobra generally makes good stuff and their R&D seems solid. Olsavsky has been in charge of some seriously good products over the years. I'm curious how they will implement the different shaft weights.

The name is One LENGTH not one spec. The idea is to allow the same* setup with virtually every iron. *setup being more so overall posture than to exact ball position.

The concept is not foreign. Simply look to the number of players on tour who will use different shafts in their driving irons or use a combo set of irons with a more CB or *forgiving* head design, they are typically seeking easier launch while maintaining the same control.

The biggest issue i see with the average golfer who doesn't generate any where close to tour speeds is that with heavier shafts in the long irons the average joe tends to shorter up and swing harder rather than let the length of their swing dictate overall speed. Much if this could easily be attributed to the weight of the shaft in conjuncture with a full/long swing being difficult to control.

By moving to a light weight shaft in the long irons, it simply allows golfers to flight the ball higher. The biggest issue I've seen reported is that the shorter long irons simply don't get high enough despite contact/strike reported being much improved. The shorter shaft = lower launch is also a well known aspect of the golf swing. They even discuss it in the TS Driver fitting video from a while back.

With all that being said, it must be kept in mind that the "stock" offerings have a very specific portion of the bell curve that it is tailoring to. Player's who have no issue generating speed or can strike/elevate long irons with ease need not concern themselves with the stock specs as they likely would be moving in to a fitted set anyways.

As a builder/fitter/tinkerer the choice to move to different weight of shaft makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for the info.

Cobra themselves started out with the One Length F7’s having matching head weights, lie angles, shaft weights, and length. They are taking the SL concept in a different direction than the other leading SL iron set in the market- Wishon Sterling.

Which is fine by me! It’s just an interesting evolution of their One Length concept, and I’m sure they have their reasons for pushing the clubs in this direction.

I play the Sterlings and haven’t noticed a lack of launch in the lower-lofted irons. As you say, though, it is all about speed and if the player has enough of it to elevate the 4 and 5 irons.

This is a funky looking iron.

Looks like they're doing progressive shaft weights on the F9 One Length irons? First they changed the lie angles from uniform to variable, and now shaft weights. The length is basically the only constant with their SL irons now. Swing weight too I guess.

Interesting ideas. I'll be curious to see whether people notice more/less consistency vs Cobra's previous One Length sets.

shaft weight changes. but the SW always stays the same.

not 100%, but i think also the kickpoint in those two shafts (4-7 are one weight, 8-SW are another) changes.

CB is longer by a little bit. Maybe a centimeter heel to toe.

I can’t recall the numbers but memory serves me right that CB is about a centimeter long heel to toe, a tad thicker top line and friendlier sole. A true CB.

Sets should be available for order now. Shipping to start next week if I recall?

There is no way the CB’s are shipping next week. Not a prayer!

Why...it shows the flow sets as being “in stock”?

Trust me I hope you are right. When I ordered my CB’s I was told the embargo is not lifting until 10.11

So I’m sure it’s been said but will we see a new version of the forged one length this year?

Hope so, maybe in DBM variable & one length?

FWIW the customer service rep I spoke with yesterday said no such luck on a DMB forged tour variable or OL. He didn't have definitive information since it's still pretty far out, but said it sounds like the next fall's update to FTB would move it more in a player's direction and the forged tour would eventually go away. Not the answer I was looking for but now I have visions of a FTB with a thinner top line and traditional lofts dancing in my head. Maybe more wins from Bryson will change that plan though...

What is the difference between the CBs and Forged Tours?

The CB's are part of what were previously called, "King Pro Forged CB/MB Irons"...now called "King Forged CB/MB Irons". I would say they are more "blade" like with a compact head size.

The King Forged Tour Irons are larger, more comparable to a Titleist AP2. Have not hit/played the Forged Tour Irons.

Is that new CB sole a touch wider than previous 2016 version? I have the chrome blended set of CBs and the black MBs from 2016. Easily the best iron I've ever hit.

I don't believe so. Seem to measure the same, about 2cm. If anything, I would say they seem to have softened/grinded the edges? Only noticeable visual changes would be the toe being softened and the added tungsten to the SOLE.

You’ve said they’ve added tungsten to the heel twice now. Do you mean the sole / bottom of the club?

The website shots two tungsten weights. One in the center of the sole and one in the bottom of the toe through the side.

I just want to validate what the site shows versus what is real life.
