I’d actually argue it was less playable. Maltby Playability Index confirms. Man up and play the blades :p

I have a set of JDM Mizuno MP-5 CP irons that have a copper underlay. These were a JDM Mizuno limited release with "CP" laser etched in the hosel (stands for copper plate). They came shafted with limited Nippon Modus 125 shafts (black at grip end fading to silver at the head end). They are a pretty special set of irons and I just can't find anything good enough to completely kick them to the curb. I had a USDM set of MP-5's before acquiring the CP's and they are significantly softer than the USDM retail version. They also have a heavier head weight which I believe is because of the copper underlay. For what its worth, when the MP-18 came out I demo'd them and they felt quite harsh in comparison so I never did buy into those. I have no idea what the yet to be released MP-20 will feel like but if its anything like my MP-5 CP's then I will definitely be in line to get a set.

Legit question I was thinking, just because I usually play cast only because I’m cost conscious.

Not likely since there will be chrome over top of the copper layer. The 1025E Pure Select that is HD Forged stands up pretty well.

Saw this set at a shop in Tokyo earlier this year. Still in plastic. I actually did not know that they were anything special, but I wanted to buy them. Guess it’s fate telling me I need to buy the new ones.

Those are the reissue ones from a couple years ago not originals. They sell for about 3000 US but have the copper underlay

Yeah, this. Copper underlayment was SOP on any decent set of irons back before chrome plating evolved into what it currently is, with nickel plating underneath the chrome layer. All of the old Hoffman forgings would wear to copper once you hit enough balls to get through the chrome, then you'd have to hit through the copper layer before they'd get down to raw steel and rust. Not sure exactly where Mizuno phased it out the first time around. The 14/29 generation sounds about right--they definitely were and the 32s/33s definitely were not.

I love a nicely made set of blades as much as anyone else, but frankly this strikes me as a marketing gimmick. I'm sure they'll feel very nice, but there are better, easier, cheaper, more effective ways to tweak feel than switching from a nickel to a copper underlay. Feel=vibration, and the difference between copper and nickel is pretty much nonexistent. If you really want to blow someone away with how "soft" your irons feel take about $0.75 worth of caulk backing rod and shove it down the shafts next time you're regripping them. Heck, you could call them "ProSoft" or "Cushin" or "SensiCore" and patent them.

I have never heard of doing that with backer rod, is that something people actually do?

Oh yeah, for sure. Google around in the clubmaking forum and there should be some old threads about it. Not really sure it's worth doing--they kill so much vibration that clubs come out feeling almost too soft IMO ("marshmallowy")--but it works on the cheap if that's what you're going for. 100% the same basic idea as any other vibration dampening shaft insert. Try it in something you have laying around, like a 3 iron you'll never use or a crappy Northwestern partial set you bought for your kid. The before and after difference is real.
