for the walkers --- carrying vs. push cart vs. ride

Up until about a month ago, I carried my bag. But, I was far too sore after each round (severe arthritis in both knees and too young for knee replacement surgery). So, I bought myself a ClicGear 3.5. It's the best piece of equipment that I've bought for my game. I used to find myself getting tired through the last 4 holes or so. No longer.

I used to walk 100% even when playing partners rode, still have my Clicgear in the trunk. The guys I play with now are pretty good players and always ride so I end up riding 99% of the time. We can usually play 18 in 3 hours or less which is nice. I’ve played 18 with a cart in 2 hours by myself with no one in front of me, carts can really speeds up the game if used properly.

I'm the unicorn then. Philly burbs resident, push my Cligear quite a bit and mange to break 80 now and then. I've seen a few of us in my travels around the area...

I hated a push cart and found it to be more work than just carrying. Then I was introduced to the Alphard Golf ewheels and now i am back to being kinda lazy. Not golf cart lazy, but close. I find that I have much better tempo/rhythm and ultimately enjoy the round more than when i ride. Unless the course is crazy hilly and is not walking friendly.

Walk and carry whenever possible. My Saturday group rides so I follow suit, and sometimes I’m a guest and the host rides, so . . .

I have a three-wheel trolley that my wife bought me but have yet to use it. Carrying is not yet a problem physically so I can’t be arsed to haul it out to the car, etc. Now, there are courses I’ve played like Gamble Sands that have the big-wheeled rickshaws. If one of those is offered I don’t refuse.

Push cart for 90% of my rounds (advantageous for carrying my soft sided cooler of snacks & drinks)

Carry a Jones Players Series for other 10% of rounds where I play with half set (1W, 2H, 5i, 7i, 9i, SW, Putter)

I find carrying a half set easier than using a push cart, and only ride when playing in an event where carts are expected

I walk 99% of my rounds. The push-cart is definitely the way to go for most rounds. Much easier than carrying.

However, when I'm playing a hilly course or when the course is really wet, then the push cart does become a bit of a burden. I just picked a Jones Players Series bag for those rounds. I imagine that I will likely split my time 75% push/25% carry moving forward.

Golf just isn't the same game when riding around. Moving forward, I simply won't play courses were walking is not an option.

Stewart X9 here. I no longer use a riding cart. Even when I play with guys that ride, I use my follow cart. I will once in a blue moon carry a Sunday stand bag with 9 clubs. With the X9 I walk 3 rounds a week. I can carry a ton of water, food, and any extra stuff I may need and it doesn't affect me at all. I love this thing. Yes, its expensive but worth every penny. Its a blast to use. It goes up and down any hills in either remote or follow mode without a second thought.

My grandfather was a pull cart guy, I watched him dump his clubs a million times, hitch his back pulling the contraption out of the trunk of his car, so I don't see the practicality in any pull/push carts. I don't have room at my apartment to store a cart, barely have room for all my clubs and stand bag.

Been "carts only" pre COVID, but got back into walking in 2020.

I'm 53, mostly sedentary, so walking and carrying has been beneficial. I bought a lightweight carry bag and have been humping it since May.

It's a drag, lol. Double straps are terrible, club tangle, poor storage, stands that are slow to activate. Getting paired with carts (now with one driver heading straight to their ball) and racing to keep pace is tough too. By the 16th hole, I'm wiped.

I walked 18 with a caddie this weekend, it was probably the best walking experience I have had..

Someone is going to invent an integrated cart/bag that will be a gamechanger...

Get a motorized trolley, its almost like walking with a caddie (except for the advice part). No picking up the bag, no pushing up hills, just walking. I use one that's "manual", I have to steer it and control the speed with my hands, but it still takes the load of the clubs off my back.

I had gotten to the point where I really couldn't walk my home course carrying my bag, and I'm about 10 years older than you. Its pretty hilly, something like 800 feet up and down based on one of the "map my hike" apps, and well over 6 miles. When I compared it to even one year of paying to ride, it makes a lot of sense. It doesn't have a remote, or the "follow" feature like the Stewart unit someone mentioned earlier, but its a bunch cheaper than most of those other units too.

I use a 2 wheel pull cart, and find all of the posts about pull carts . . . interesting. I don't have an issue maneuvering it around greens or obstacles. My home course has 3 holes with a good 30 feet elevation change and I really like it. That being said, my dad and brother have newer 3 wheel carts and I definitely see the issues some have said in regards to storage and lugging it out of the car. Mine folds up in such a way that it's just slightly larger than a sunday bag. I wish more cart manufacturers would offer those types.

That was a good article, quite informative. I purchased a a stand bag and was thinking about carrying a couple times, but with my back issues (it's not a bad back, but it's not a good back), I'll keep using the cart, and possibly look into a push cart, trying to find one that folds up similar to mine.

That's pretty much what I'd be looking for, and yeah for someone who had to think hard to spend $225 on new to me irons it's pretty steep, but I gotta admit, it looks nice and has some nice features.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
