found famous fourmer pga players clubs at flea market

was at local flea market and a beautiful mint condition macgregor green and white staff bag caught my eye. I went to take acloser look and its a VIP mac bag. in it are a set of powerbilt scotch blades 2-pw {missing 9 iron) true temper s500 shafts. on each iron is REX CAULDWELL engraved and a date from 1986. I ask about them and the guy says 7$ for the whole bag. I pay the man and leave with a huge grin on my face. I get home a look them over real good and they are the real deal. I cant remember what equiptment rex had at this time but no doubt-these are his clubs. a week goes by and I am heading to my friends golf shop to show them to him as he has been in the biz 45 years and knowa most of the pros , his shop was very near the TPC in ponte vedre. its a very long drive from my home all the way across jax fla and I needed to go to the bathroom so stopped at the salvation army to use restroom and of course brouse the clubs. now this is where things get strange-I look in the barrel of loose clubs and see a powerbuilt scotch blade and say wow. i see its a 9 iron and look and on it is engraved REX CAULDWELL. fate or what! I did ask the flee market guy where the clubs came from and he said an auction, how the 9 got separated and ended up at salvation army is a mystery. well soon I will take rex,s irons for a spin at the 9 hole course in pontre verde. , I still don't know how to post pocs here so forgive me.

Well if the exact name you have posted is correct then it’s not who you think it is. The pga tour player was REX CALDWELL ( no U). Not CAULDWELL.

I picked up a set of Top Flite blades which had an R.R stamped on them. I sent a tweet photo to Irish pro Ronan Rafferty and he confirmed they made 3 sets for him in Japan in the late 1980's. He said he gave one set to Payne Stewart.

What a find! Very neat how you found the 9 iron. I had never heard of Rex Caldwell but from reading the article about him he was a piece of work. I wish I could find the "This thread is useless without pictures" emoji.

Yep you can tell that is straight out of the custom shop 65 66 Top Flite scripting and 74 profile--- Yep I was a Spalding guy before I fell in love with Macgregor----- But I do have 2 sets of Spalding irons a set of 53 Tournament blades and a partial set of 66 Elites. And a butt load of Spalding wedges. And for some reason that is strange the only Spalding wedge I really liked was my 66 Elite 333 Custom 10 iron which I still have with a cracked hosel. But for some reason I love to look at the old Spalding wedges so I keep them around

Do my eyes deceive me? Those Top Flites look suspiciously like hogan 88 redlines. Could just be the angle of the photo. How do they play?

I don't have a set of Redlines to compare but they do look similar. I've had a few rounds with the Topflites and they play well. They have extra stiff shafts so they're a bit strong for me.

no ser numbers but they all match even the 9. these are the real deals. all have s500 shafts
