The biggest difference between now and then?

agronomy and equipment. The players are a product of their times.

the Ping Eye 2 LW changed the game, the Cleveland 588 was great but the Eye2 was in a a lot of bags in the 80’s and 90’s.

Good grief man. I don’t think thread starting denotes thread ownership. It does expect participation, sure. But it doesn’t give you policing rights. Peoples opinions won’t match yours always. If you can’t take that and run with it , don’t start threads. This is something I actively tell myself too. As im quite opinionated. Try seeing the other side. It’s freeing even if you don’t change your mind.

Example Somebody has started a “5 majors thread “ and so far I’ve fought the urge to ask if he meant to post in the lpga section since there aren’t 5 majors . So I know It’s hard to do Lol

and i still say shells world of golf was better to watch that kapalua for all but last 5 holes and playoff.

Let us be clear..... There is nothing wrong with a spirited debate.

Point #1..I have a problem when I'm misquoted.

Point #2...I know that I don't own a thread as you put it, this is a public site.

Point #3...I do have a problem with idiot posters chiming in for the sake of chaos.

Point #4...I have a problem with People telling me that I should start only the threads that they deem necessary for this site, and they're not the moderator.

Again, you have posters on this site that never start a thread but take great pride in wrecking them... In the future they will be called out.

Note: I appreciate your concern and thank you for your thoughtful comments, but I am more than capable of fending off my detractors.

On a side note:  I know that I'm only right 95% of the time.....LOL! Now let's get back to Shell's WWOG...

I just don't see the need to bash and gang up on posters here.... With that being said, I do enjoy those old matches better than anything else on TV other than the majors. I watched almost all of them over the holidays. It's actually helped my game since I always grab a 60 or 56 but since playing shots around the green with my 52 and pitching wedge I'm getting closer to the hole and up and down more often.

I play public courses. Few I would call pristine conditioning-wise. I'll chip with whatever but I ain't hitting anything that has a chance (when struck well) of landing short of the fringe (if it is in good shape) or the green if the fringe sucks. I don't trust those bounces.

The one time I intentionally hit it short of green to let it trickle on through rough was where the rough was burnt-out shiny and somewhat trampled. I was above the green and had about 20 yards to a hole cut front right. I pulled the shot off as well as I could but still had 15+ feet for birdie. Easy par.

Well, I am getting older so never know when help carrying my water could be useful . . . .

So back to Shell's WWOG @Titleist99 - let's pretend you haven't called people who don't agree with you "arseholes" "idiots" "cowards" and "bullies", and that you really did see a few of those old-time guys wielding wedges in a skilled fashion like they actually did on the show, what positives were you taking from watching? Have you gained any insights you may not have considered from some of the things related by other posters about greens, equipment and techniques? Genuinely curious because I still think it's one of the best shows ever and frankly I enjoy it more 50 or more years later than I did then. Let 'er rip!

I don't recall calling anyone directly those names. Now I may have had a private conversation with a poster and those things may or may not have come up. I was just watching Challenge Golf with Arnold Palmer and Gary Player as host and World Series of Golf and my findings was confirmed. Players of that era around the greens did not automatically go or the lofted club as players of today does. Of course, they were proficient with the wedge

but the rough and greens were not as well groomed as today's courses....IMO

I learned today that Arnold Palmer was doing television golf first then he was joined by Gary Player and then Jack Nicklaus ffor Big Three Golf.

It is just a different philosophy.

Maybe you can lay the fact that most pros now use a 60 or 56 (or whatever their equivalents they are carrying) to chip and pitch with at the feet of conditioning. The consistency both in terms of consistency from green to green (including surrounds and aprons and what-not) and consistency in conditions from course to course leads them to that.

Ray Floyd advocated for using whatever club got the ball on the green and rolling soonest. For amateurs, when you use more of a putting style stroke, that might likely lead to more consistent results than trying to manipulate the face and use the bounce (or not use the bounce) on a more lofted wedge.

I guess what I am saying is if you are very well practiced then using one club and changing slightly how you hit the ball might get you closer to the hole. But for the rest of us (not pros or people without the luxury of tons of practice time) you are better off making the same stroke and changing clubs to suit the shot needed.

I know I am guilty of grabbing maybe my 56 and the 60 and a putter and chasing after the ball to chip on. Often I get less than stellar results due to lie or poor execution when maybe I would have done better with an 8 iron had I just went back to the cart or my bag to get the right club.

What was interesting was how poor the conditions were on a lot of the courses and that only recently have the pro level courses become pristine. I like how they would manufacturer shots using a variety of clubs instead of just grabbing a sand wedge like today's players do. Even Faldo says 'grab a 9 iron to chip' on the telecasts (lost art I guess). Another observation was the very handsy putting stroke, again because they were putting on greens much slower than today's tournament sites. Interesting and corny programs. And the clothes from 40 years ago are something to see as well.
