Is Webb currently the most underrated American golfer?

Exactly what I thought as well. Was watching him catch up and beat Tony Finau in the Waste Management. Very quiet and composed, just goes on playing high quality shots. I don't claim to know anything about him, hardly been to the same continent with him, but my impression is that he's happy to stay away from the spotlight and quietly do what he does. I would imagine having him in the rear view mirror when leading by a thin margin to be fairly nerving.

And apparently I upset an irrational Rickie fan. I am actually a big fan of Fowler and root for him any time he's playing. I just used him in this example because if you asked the average golf fan who was better I bet Rickie would get picked 9/10 times, when it reality it should be the opposite.

I mean as of right now obviously; Webb's ranked 20 spots higher in the rankings. They're actually pretty similar career wise; Webb has 6 wins in 280 starts; Fowler 5 in 240. That one win difference is obviously massive considering it's a US Open. Both have won Players, Phoenix. Both feel like guys who are usually in the last couple qualifying spots or captains pick discussion for national teams. Long winded way of saying that I think they're on average similar caliber players although I'd give Webb the edge since I feel like his results would be better without the down period around the anchoring ban. I have a feeling Webb's trending towards that 2nd tier of American players after Brooks, DJ, JT, and Tiger battling X and Cantlay to challenge that top group. Rickie seems like another step below that in that 8-12 range of Americans.

100% correct. I'd take Webb, especially as well as hes played the last 18 months, on my team anyday. His PC record is misleading considering he was paired with Reed 3 times at Royal Melbourne. Not sure anyone could've won in that circumstance and he pulled through with a clutch singles win in the 4th to last group on Sunday.

Not a Star? I donnu about that.....he is WAAAY better than a Journeyman. I agree he probably is not a "cross-over" guy who anybody outside of golf could identify but I would definately consider him a "star" golfer....US Open, Players, perrenial Ryder/President's Cupper....and about 9 kids. He did great at last Ryder Cup. He should have played more. Furyk says that his biggest regret as captain - not playing Webb more.

Not to me. A golfers legacy is defined by tournament wins, and specifically major wins, well before Ryder Cup record. The biggest debate in golf is Jack vs. Tiger and it all comes down to wins and majors, their Ryder Cup records are an afterthought.

He was at Wake Forest the same time as my daughter so I tend to root for him. He has a Major and five other wins so he certainly has the talent. I do not think he is underrated an and he is recognized as an excellent pro golfer. HOF? A few more wins or another Major.

how would you like him to be treated? the tour is about selling personalities. You can go back in history and find his equivalent to be quite common :

 

Andy North, Billy Casper, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson.. great players but you can't say they had personalities the tour would hang their jock straps on.

I like Webb, he is our hometown guy but if what you are suggesting is accurate, that speaks to the World Golf HOF currently being the "Hall of pretty good". With the basic premise being "could you tell the story of an era of golf without that person?" How is he close? Other than having 14 kids, his most notable moment was the "Birdman interview" post US OPen Victory.

I think he is one of the most underrated players at the moment. He handles him self very well and I would not be surprised if he wins another Players or another major this year.

I think that's fair to say. The stat that got me was 16 straight top 30 finishes with seven top 5s. Didn't realize he was running that hot!

Not even close. According to the popular and widely-accepted Weight (lbs)/Current Ball Striking Ranking (thru the WM open for 2020), Webb's coefficient of 25 (175 lbs / 7th spot in Ball Striking) far outpaces Chucky's anemic 4.31 (155 lbs/36th spot).

I totally disagree with your summation of The Ryder Cup. It is a significant and meaningful golf event for most of the world.

If you think it is a 3 day exhibition, go back and read the historical comments of US players revealing how much it means to them to represent our country in this event.
