I am now a golfer

Recommended Posts

hello new golf forum

I thought I should get my first post under my belt on this forum. I have recently decided that I am a golfer. Getting too old for playing basketball (torn Achilles and calf muscle) so I need something to keep the competitive juices flowing. I played some golf growing up in Monterey but mostly played other sports. I love fly fishing for steelhead but the opportunities for that are few and far between theses days.......so here I am. Just picked up some new to me clubs Ap2 714, M2 driver, couple Vokey wedges and have been looking into adding a few more clubs. I have watched lots of lessons online the last couple weeks and just shot the best round of my life. Looking forward to breaking a 100 soon hahaha. I have had a lot of fun on fly fishing forums the last few years so I thought I would give a couple golf forums a try.

thanks for your time

bets regards

Mike

Welcome to Golfwrx. There are a lot of useful sections of this site both for learning the game and picking up new and used equipment and everything in between. Great way to feed the fire. Don’t fall into the trap of many who throw topics out there for you to respond to just so they can state their prepared argument. Keep it light and have fun with everything offered. It is a great place to share your experiences and knowledge about the game.

You will see a lot of similarities:

The equipment forum if you replace names of equipment manufacturers will be very similar to Sage v Winston v Scott. Blade threads will be similar to the original Winston IM6 from the 70's and the new NRX+ with many saying no one is good enough to fish with the old Winstons… even the pros don't do it anymore, why would you? The Tech sub forum will be similar to the guy who can't turn over his bug, so the obvious response is the equipment, so instead of mentioning practice, the first response is the furled leader. Take any single length discussion and immediately think, Tenkara. Putters and ball forums are similar too, just separate out the names of golf balls/putters for flies or leader material.

The rules forum is for those who really know the rules. For example, you may know the limit on the Deschutes, but in this forum you will find out the slot limit for Stripers in NY.

I used to spend a lot of time in the Instruction and Academy forum. There is a LOT of great information in there, find your guys and read everything they write. But there is a lot of this, in FF terms. I am a beginner and want to mend properly, and the first six responders say, "I just tuck cast it" as if there aren't about 6 advanced steps involved in a proper tuck cast to get the proper amount of mend... advice well beyond the beginner.

The travel forum is exactly the same.

Tight lines, welcome to the forum.

I'm jealous - many moons ago fly fishing for bass and bluegill kept me busy in the winter when I couldn't play golf with tying flies and making my own fly rods. But, I got married, moved from farm pond heaven to an area with very limited opportunities for the kind of farm pond fly fishing I enjoyed and my fly fishing went by the wayside in favor of open water for walleyes and bass and panfish. As my daughters got more into golf or tennis, also years ago, fishing all but dried up for me and golf took over a lot of those opportunities, don't even go to Canada any more. Always wanted to fly fish for steelhead and someday I may, and one of these years we'll take a National Parks vacation out west and do a little trout fishing. This post has me thinking all sorts of good things on a day when it comes in handy!

Welcome to golf! I never had any trouble learning to fly cast, but I'll throw in my suggestion you find someone you "click" with and has good results with other students as a teacher and try and get a solid start that way. Watching YouTube stuff can be valuable if you know what you are looking for (and actually need and can implement yourself which is the trick) or it can be the deepest rabbit hole in the history of the civilized world, lol.

Welcome to the game of golf, arguably the greatest game ever invented by man!

My story is slightly similar to yours in that when I was in my teens/early 20's I played a crap-ton of basketball. I enjoyed those days, but eventually I decided the wear and tear on the body wasn't worth it anymore. I picked up golf shortly after I met my wife as a way to try and suck up to her dad. After one round I was hooked.

24 years later I'm still addicted.

Mike,

Welcome. This is the finest intro post I have seen in a long time. I'm glad you joined.

Keep trying when it comes to this game - just keep trying.

As is so often the case, I am so glad you didn't attempt one of the following with your first post:

to challenge the forum to provide a survey to provide a comparison to brag about their golf life to talk about other websites, such as Jo-Ann Fabrics

Good to know you.

Generally those don't end up in the throw down arguments about "point and shoot" since they all know they are anachronisms just waiting for the $1000 bill when their piece of grass breaks so I honestly forgot about them. Thank you for reminding me. I have to admit, I didn't do the fly fishing forums too much, I found them to be more curmudgeonly than even the likewise stigmatized golfers.

I did fish a lot though, until I traded it in for "pasture pool" as the guides around here call it.
