Mizuno Holy Grail comparison

Yum yum for the purists...
Hit the Mp-67's right out of the box and all you can say is wow. Great looking head and the 9 and PW dont have that funky Japanese wedge round shape to them either. Some say "ahhh they finally got it."

That said you cant discount the old hall of famers. First is the Mizuno TN-87. TN for Tommy Nakajima and one of the first "modern blades" with the larger head form heel to toe. Under the chrome finish is a copper underlay that some say makes them some of the sweetest feeling clubs they will ever use. Todd Hamilton used them to win the Btritish Open.

And the Japanese released version of the MP-11 is the satin MS-11. Yum. Cambered sole and feel of butter when you hit the ball. Lets see if Joe or some of the old purists can chime in on some facts of the TN-87 or the MS-11's.

Excellent lines and feel from these timeless muscle backs.

I played MP11's for ~10 years (they still go out from time to time). They were superior to the 14's & 29's IMO. I was disapointed they stopped production and (for me) the T-Zoids were never going to be an option. I playing around w/32's and find them to be nice. The 67's feel very good as well. I know some said the 11's were tough in the long irons, but I would have to disagree. They were very easy to hit high for me w/X100's.

GREAT CLUB's if you can find them - mine are basically "grooveless" from 7i-PW.

I absolutely love my MP-67's, now I wish I could change my screen name to Mizunojunkie. I dont have a Cleveland club in my bag anymore. Anyway They remind me in feel to my 14's which I still hit on occasion. The MP-67 is awesome!

Oh NO! You are putting me on the spot again! :russian_roulette:

Talk about purist, Simple!!!

Look at the beveled top line of the MS 11, bounce angle and the size of the head....talk about yum yum when you nail it on the sweet spot. :partytime2:

But for you who don't have the consistency to hit it there, I can grind the hosel flat and put groves on it with a little sugar when i epoxied the shaft to help you say " How sweet it is", but your inner brain will say " Damn my fingers are numb".

I absolutely love my 67's and those other models look pretty sweet as well. When I got them in March of this year my ball striking has become much better and more consistent that during rounds and practice sessions, almost every iron is struck pure and square. The feeling is so unique and sweet you just want to keep hitting them, I hope I can get a few season with them they're that good and Mizuno will most likely be the only irons I buy from now on. Also, if youre looking to get the 67's go onto Mizuno's website and find out when a demo day is going to be held in your area. The staff is very knowledgable and helpful plus you don't pay extra for the fitting if you buy the clubs that day which is also a very nice perk.

Todd Hamilton didn't use the TN-87 to win the British, he used the MP-33. He had the MP-33 at the British as well as in his Honda Classic win that year. If you go to GettyImages and look at the pictures from the British that year(or any pictures from that year), you can clearly see the MP-33 in his hands. The Golf Channel reports from that year have the MP-33 in the bag for both events, and if you look at his what's in the bag from Golf Magazine the MP-33 are in that as well. Not saying he hasn't played the TN-87 since then, because he has, but he didn't have them in the bag then.

My MP-67s were my first foray into true blades and I love them. I chose them over 32's based on looks alone. Performance was equal. I would love to hit some of the old Mizzy classics for the heck of it. I hope Mizzy does not release another blade in a while so as not to tempt my dark ho side.

If I were at home I could throw up some pics of my Super 11 blades. I too have had TN-87, MP-29, MP-14, MP-33. IMHOP the Super 11 and TN-87 are the best feeling irons I have ever hit. I prefer the head shape and sole grind of the Super 11's to anything that I have ever had. Unfort. I am going to have to unload them soon :) cause a) I have a 7 month old, a new career, and just moved across country (so I need the money) and b) I am not playing much golf so I have no business abusing these great blades. If I didn't need the money, these would be sitting in a closet for years until I was playing more and then they would come back to life. Long live the Super 11! Great thread that certainly appeals to my purist side (I still play a driver that is smaller than 400cc)

I'm a long time fan of Mizunos and have several U.S. sets. I see lots of people post about sets direct from Japan where you can customize the finish, stamping etc. etc. How do I do this. I spoke to a local Mizuno rep and he had no idea and neither did my club pros. Please direct me.

Thanks. This is my first post. Glad I found the place. Looking forward to using the site.

Awesome post, we should have more like this one. This Winter I'm on a quest to acquire a minty or near minty set of MP29's. They are the sweetest forged club ever made imo. A set I wanted to buy back in the late 90s, although they were $999.00 on the rack, I had the money but never pulled the trigger. MP29s with S300s is the ticket.

Great pics there.

I've always had a soft spot for Mizuno irons. I grew up playing them, my first three sets being Mizunos. I still look back with fondness at all those times, standing on a misty practice ground in October with a TP-9 in my hands.

I think the TP-9 and 11 are still about the best-looking clubs I've ever seen and owned. None of the modern stuff (other than my old 681s and my current Nikes) come close in my eyes.

I'm old fashioned, and still go for the 'less is more' approach with golf clubs. Like the saying goes: they don't make them like they used to.

thanks for the comment about the Pics. What I like about the looks in the MP-67's is the transition between the hozel and the topline. Nice smooth lines with an easy transition.

The MS-11's are set up light with Rifle shafts. They are at a D1. I played very well and confident with them for the few rounds I had. Frames the baal even better than the 67's for me. Satin is killer to. Looks good in the bag next to the Miz R wedges.

I played the MP-14s up until this year, and have the MP-67s in my bag now. Love them. Used them to pass my P.A.T.

I've since sold the MP-14s to a new owner who will hopefully provide them a good home. Before I got my MP-67s, I was looking on eBay and trying to snag a set of MP-9s. When I was first starting out, I had King Cobras. And after a while, I wanted something smaller, with less offset and more workable. I was going to buy a set of MP-9s from a pro friend of mine for 175.00, even took them home. But I had just bought a set of MacGregor cast irons, with minimal offset and a blade-like shape. And I passed on the Mizzies because I figured "when would I swap out irons?" It wasn't too long after that that I finally got a set of blades and never looked back. Traded a Ti TM driver (which I hated) and throw in my beloved 8802 for a set of Wilson Staff blades, and then order another 8802 and try to get the lead tape right yet again.

I've regretted it ever since. Even when I got my MP-14s, I still pined for MP-9s. I'll probably get a set at some point in the next few years, just for fun.

Ever notice that the people that asks stupid questions (Which is the best driver on the market now? or Which is better, CB or blades?) or bumps old threads are the ones that just joined the forum with less than 10 posts to their name?

People bump old threads because they do goolge searches about certain things and it brings up old threads . They read then comment. Its not a big deal. If it was it should have been deleted years ago... its here for needed history an help for people. Whats the big deal? Just use your ? and you can answer your own question of why someone would comment on an old thread. No need to be rude to everyone just because you didnt think before you spoke. Yeah Im looking at you alien with red eyes lol
