What is your go to Swing Thought?

' Freddie / JT / Tony / Rory! ' (reminder all of this in preshot routine)

  • Freddie : addressing -> smooth tempo
  • JT : setup & takeaway -> in-sync / wide / deep
  • Tony : backswing -> to make sure it stays short
  • Rory! : top & transition -> recentering / downward pressure left foot / in-out / hips rotation

Yes, it rhymes

Swing the club to the target.

I also let too much tension creep into my swing, so "soft arms" is one I use on occasion.

I don't take a practice swing unless I have the time to take what I like to what I like to call a rehearsal swing. I only do that if I can focus my tiny brain long enough to take a version of my swing at the ball, without the ball, that is equal in length, effort and pace. It also helps if I'm able to move directly into my "real" swing.

Often, those rehearsal swings precede my best shots of the round.

This is pretty funny.

I stopped taking full practice swings (or any at all actually) a looooong time ago,,,,,,,, when i realized that FAR too often I'd make a "perfect" practice swing and then proceed to mishit the actual shot.

Haven't taken a full practice swing in 30+ years.

Different strokes and all. :classic_smile:

Stay balanced and centered over the ball.  Avoid excess body movement.

Maybe not the best way to crush a golf ball, but my contact generally does well when I focus just on that.

THIS. Between an operation and CV-19 suspension and a rough time getting back I'd been chunking and pulling and doing all sorts of things wrong to the point of thinking about giving it up.

Then I went through the "process" and realized that I was back into a very old habit of having too much weight towards my toes and being bent over too much and,,,,,, losing my balance.

Began centering my weight again and "stacking" it over my feet, keeping my head up and still. Back to striking it much better now. Now if I could only putt,,,,,,,,, :classic_rolleyes: :classic_sad:

The thing is I don't take very many of them over the course of a round. Last time out I maybe did the rehearsal deal 5-7 times. As I said, I have to be comitted and able to step right in after I do. My golf buddy averages three practice swings per full swing shot. Each is your typical lazy "I don't really swing like this" kind of swing that only exists to keep him loose & suck up some time. My good rehearsal swings sometimes show me just how lousy my swing might be and I'm not even trying to strike the ball. Sometimes they help and sometimes...

  • 2 months later...

Came across this wondering if anyone had posted the question, so thought I'd add my 2 cents.  I am constantly trying new swings in an attempt to find the easiest one I can do consistently.  The latest, which has only been range tested at this point due to weather is the simplest I've ever come up with.  As a lefty, it is simply this: "left hand to left ear".  For a righty, it would be "right hand to right ear".  We'll see how it translates to the course.

If I'm having one of those hot-cold-hot-cold shot days, I normally skip the Swing Thought and just go non-verbal.

I carefully line up the shot, and then hit the ball.

The worst thing I can have is a Beehive Burst. With the BB, I get a flood of thoughts about different motion and angle considerations right before I start my takeaway. Really throws off timing.
