305g Wedge hits a ball 60+ yards so why putt w/ heavy putter for the 4 footer

used balls

Recommended Posts

Why does a putter need to weigh more than 330g to make a 4 footer for par?

Do you think you'd putt better with a sub 340g putter?

I think if a putter blended in with your set  in terms of head weight you would be a better putter.

320g- 335g work fine if golfers give  them a chance.

Anyone with a half decent stroke could putt just fine if they'd give it a shot and stuck with it.

Just doesnt make sense to me why were using such heavy putters these days.

Because golf is an individual sport what works for you doesn't mean it will work for me or anyone else reading this.

Putting is also a comfort thing, I can putt with a 340g head or less but it just doesn't feel as comfortable to me as a heavier head so that's why I like a heavier head.

Finally it's my bag, if I want to putt with a 500g putter or 250g putter I can because it's my bag. If it works who cares what others use.

As Ben Hogen said, 'There is no similarity between golf and putting; they are two different games'

So having a putter that does not blend with your set is completely logical.

This ... the golf swing is about speed. Putting is all about nerves. Heavier putter, easier to stop the "twitches" and keep the head online.

I mean I hate heavy putters but still not sure how a more consistent flow of headweights would mean much since putting is so much different compared to all other shots. Just whatever is comfortable for you, which is why there's so many styles and grips for putting.

The putter does one thing and for some, that one thing works better with a heavier head to smooth out the stroke. If the wedge was only used to make short, rolling chips onto the green then it would be played much heavier in my bag to give me a smooth, pendulum stroke without getting yippy. However, I use the wedge for full and partial shots, far more often...a super heavy head would not be very good in those situations.

I think most people grip their putter too tight, which in turn makes the head feel lighter. Then they want a heavier head putter to compensate.

Personally, I have a light grip and won't use a putter head heavier than 345 grams. My shaft is 98 grams and my grip varies between 65 and 70 grams. I'm sure I could go down to 330 grams in head weight and be just fine.

It's almost exactly the opposite. The best putters in the world grip their putters with vice-like grips. Ask @MonteScheinblum

I'll trust Ben Crenshaw, Brad Faxon, Tiger Woods, Butch Harmon, and Stan Utley over Monte.  Those are just five that popped immediately into mind.

Hey, I'm with you. A tight grip pressure doesn't work for me either. I'm just saying what Monte found when he spoke to the best putters on tour.

I'd add Seve to the list too.

Cant compare the weight of a „full swing club“ with a putter. Good luck hitting a driver with a 34“ 130g shaft with a 5.0 Super Stroke on it.

putt Is a stroke, wedge Is a Swing 😉

I’ve always used a heavy putter, counter balanced and whatever helps smooth out the yips.  Dang I think I may need a putter lesson.  Ha

Brought my putter to a fitting... it didn’t register on the swing weight scale (too heavy) and weighed around 650 grams...

Still not 100% sure why I’m having distance control problems. 😂

I kept going heavier in putters to help my control... getting fit convinced me to go lighter.

Heavy, light, tight grip, loose grip, toe flo, moi,  it all has worked in some fashion for some people. Putting is an inexact science and to say one way or another is better is just not true.

putting in a nutshell- alignment/aim, actually starting it where you aimed, and speed control. Do those as consistently as possible and you will be a great putter.

Anybody can make a heavy putter. Once you go past 355g you cant feel the golf ball anymore.  Personally i want to feel the collision of golf ball & putter face. Feel the hit for better speed control.  Putting is like shooting pool, thats why my putters feel like cue sticks.  True golf clubs should be forgiving, but your putter should feel like your touching the golf ball.

I have no problem feeling the ball with 400g counterbalanced putters, and coincidentally I have always preferred the heaviest pool cue I could find.
