Best "bang for buck (or £)" driver of last 3 or 4 years - under £100

Hi all

I'm looking to pick up a new (to me driver) but don't have a huge amount to spend (around £100) I currently have a 10.5 Nike SQ Tour (got to be about 15 years old!)

Have you any suggestions for what would be the best value second hand driver to pick up (notwithstanding getting the right shaft, etc)

Would something like a Cobra F6 or F7 be a fairly good choice in regards of distance / forgiveness? I was think adjustable angle and a std loft of 10.5?

Everything is currently closed in Wales so fittings, etc are not possible - I just have my PRGR monitor and mat to work on things

For info I have a WHS of 7 but driving is a weakness in my game

"+1" w.r.t. the Cobra F7+ (awesome look & sound and i like the matte black or matte blue crown; carbon crown has similar or same(?) super light carbon material as the LTD, which was lauded for the great sound/performance)... might even like it more than the standard F8!

In the UK you are going to struggle to find any driver that was released in the last 5 years for under £100. The golf sales market has been crazy over the past year and a half and is not slowing down. Good example is I bought an M2 driver on eBay 3 years ago for £117 sold it two months ago for £165! Market is insane. You are probably going to have to increase your budget up to £150

My recommendations for potentially cheap good driver over the past few years would be Titleist 915D2, Cobra F6. Ideally a Ping G30 or Taylormade M2 but these are trending upwards of £140 most days

If you like cobra, the cobra ltd is a monster and used to be available cheap...

the used market is unfortunately insane right now, so pricing is tough.

honestly, if there is a shaft you like, search for that first and then try whatever head it comes with... I’ve found a ton more variance with shafts than heads in modern drivers. I’d rather play my favorite shaft in a head I don’t love than my favorite head in a shaft I don’t love, if that makes sense.

Throwing these in as they will probably not get mentioned but the Bstone XD series and some Tour B drivers can be found for cheap on the bay. Some JDM fixed hosel heads in the $60-70 range. They are pretty solid drivers, especially the 2nd gen Tour B JGR if you want something easy to hit straight.

As mentioned UK market has gone mad since Covid. It is also odd - quite possible to get an M5 for under £200 but virtually nothing under 6 years old for less than £150. In s/h market I am not sure there are any brands for drivers that offer greater value for money than another - perhaps Mizuno or Srizon

A Mizuno ST190 would be around your price point (used, good shape). Great driver!

@RoyalMustang: ST190, for "around £100" i.e. @dai3015OP's original budget? (if so... that's fab & IMHO would be a winner!)

Or did you mean the "within  £200" range that @Chip Out Sideways subsequently suggested?

I haven't checked conversion rates but I paid $139 for my ST190 new (on sale).  I figure they are a bit cheaper used!

It didn't work out for me (shaft was a mismatch) but I figure I can sell it here for at least $110-120.

Thanks for all the replies

I didn't realise how adversely the UK second hand golf market had been affected by Covid - prices have gone crazy!

I'll keep an eye out for some of the great suggestions on here and see what I can pick up for around my budget (can't go much higher as my other hobby, gravel bikes, have also been on a upward price trend for months)

Thanks everyone

Mountain biking golfer here so I feel your pain. If it's a hobby or activity that gets you outside, the used market for it has been crazy this year.

Also worth checking Facebook. There are loads of golf selling pages. One or two bargains pop up on there.

Don't get me started on bike parts.

I was surprised by how cheap I scored an M3 head @ $118US. But also facebook marketplace has some scores.

Going back a couple more years but, i just nabbed an 8 degree tour Adams xtd head for 26 quid. Just wanted to test it against my Mavrik sub zero. Mishits lose out a bit but find the centre on both and theres not even 3 yards difference. Even has a decent feel and sound to it.

XTD still in the bag and still a beast. Bang 4 buck is all I really look for.

I gotta toss in my Srixon Z765 driver. It's a classic design that's got plenty of distance to keep up with the current models.

Yup, adding Z565 that won mgs most wanted driver a few years ago

Thanks for all the suggestions - just managed to pick up a cobra F7 within budget

Cheers

This is my current gamer. I’ve got two shafts for it (one is 0.5” shorter and lighter), plus I got some extra head weights on eBay so I can tinker with it in the offseason.  It compared quite well to a SIM2 on center hits, and by messing with the weights on the F7, managed to get the spin to about the same level.
