developed the S word need help

Recommended Posts

I have NEVER had an issue with this shot.... my nemesis has always been the chunk chip.    I am just starting my season and went out today.  Course was empty so I planned on hitting a million different shots to get ready for the season.    Around hole 14 I hit two straight balls that went dead right.   I hit a few more shots from that same spot and sorted it out.. until hole 16... a par 3.    I hit my wedge dead right... then another wedge that started way right and hooked back...  I stood on the tee for 10 minutes hitting shots trying to figure it out.     I did slow my tempo down and actually hit 2 decent wedges straight at the pin but my last shot was another one dead right.

I am in panic mode right now... we have a golf trip in 3 weeks and could not imagine having this on the trip.    Is it fatigue that caused this ?  I did superspeed last night and then a 2 hour workout session... and lifted this morning before I went to the course ?      Any advise would be appreciated.

Probably not what you want to hear, but if you post up a nice back and front view of your swing with a wedge in the instruction forum and move this thread over there I'll bet you get some help.  No way for anyone to guess without that, but guessing will be done!

I've got my own "go tos" when it pops up, but they could be all wrong for you!

You’re spot on.

I do sympathize with the OP and went down this path with short wedges a while ago and got advice all over the map.

OP — Since I can’t help myself I’ll just say, for me, it was getting too far inside on takeaway and leading with hosel back to ball. Good luck ironing it out.

I’m a firm believer that they’re caused by compensating for poor alignment.

a few swing thoughts that help.......move further away from the ball. This will help shallow your delivery. work on taking the club straight back but delivering it from the "inside". try to keep your hands low through impact.

Shanks typically come when people get quick, flippy and over the top. It's more common with wedges on half shots cuz that's when people want to get more handsy with feel.

I got them in a two man tournament on the last day a few years ago, Chapman format.  I hit a hybrid off the tee on 165 yard par three because it got so bad.  I hit two balls out of bounds on a par 5 that didnt gain 15-20 yards forward lol...  We were laughing by the end of it.  Knowing that rattle snake is in the bag sucks.  I hit one last weekend in a scramble laughed it off had another beer and didn't think about it again till now.  If I hit more than one I will just stand very far away from the ball for a couple holes till it sorts itself out and I stop shaking in terror looking down at the ball.  I have heard to go and hit them on purpose, once you know how to do it, it's easier not to do it.

First, let’s not call it a shank. That’s such an ugly word. Instead, let’s call it a lateral shot. A video of your swing would help. The cause of a lateral shot could come from standing too far away, grip pressure, stance, or any number of things.

One proven way to cure lateral shots is setting an alignment stick, ball, or 2x4 just beyond the toe of your golf club at address. Then hit your ball without touching the alignment stick, other ball, 2x4, headcover, or whatever you set there. You hit them on wedges, so it’s possible you were “hanging on” and not swinging through the shot.

It is likely a weight distribution issue. It usually is for me, at least, whenever I’ve had them. If my weight starts to get out on my toes, I’ll start making contact close to the hosel. I’ll then focus on getting my weight more on the balls of my feet, and then the problem is usually solved.

It's this for me.  Head and chest get closer the ball on downswing.  Then it's "Hello hosel!!!"

Very easy to diagnose with DTL video.

I put my head on a wall and do full practice swings without a ball.  Can't go forward from there.  That feeling gets my head right.  YMMV

Need video. If you go chasing a fix without knowing the cause you might end up down a rabbit hole you can't escape from. If you don't generally have an issue with this, it's probably a setup problem.

Remember that Jack himself said that he starts all over again every time he hits the range. He checks all of his set-up fundamentals to make sure he hasn't slipped. How often do we do this?
