Do we Realize how Important Shoes Are?

Recommended Posts

For years, I have worn FJ Dryjoys. I still have two pair that are quite a few years old, but still look great. I got a new pair of Adidas Boost 360 shoes a couple of years ago and really liked them. However, recently, to help them last a bit longer, I got out a pair of my older shoes for practicing. I installed new spikes and new insoles so I would have a nice stable footbed (I thought). Once I started using them for practice though, I noticed sh*nks popping into my routine on a regular basis. It felt like I had to really work not to sh*nk the ball. After having this happen a few times, I took the two pairs of shoes and compared how they sat when on a level surface and how they felt when I stood in them. It seems my older shoes allowed my feet to rest at a slightly different angle than the new ones. I tend to walk a lot when playing and I step forward onto the outside of my foot when I walk. Especially with my right foot. My older shoes had worn down some on the outside part of the sole and that increased angle to the outside seems to make my forward transition more difficult when I swing. In other words, I don't get my weight moving forward the same as I do with my new shoes. I started back to practicing in my newer shoes and now rarely have those chilipeppers shooting out to the right.

Just curious if anyone else has encountered anything like this?

Not the same problem, but I have trouble switching between adidas and Ecco due to the differences in heel drop between the brands.

You could hit some balls barefoot and see if the shanks persist.  If so, it could eliminate the shoes being the culprit.

ok, being serious, one primary difference in shoes is how high you stand with them on.  I have a pair of 360's that stand 1/4 or 3/8" taller than my other pair.  Only really notice the difference slightly when putting.  Whether height or how your molded the soles is impacting how you hit it, I'd say donate that pair if it's not working for you.

I've believed this for years.  I used to switch between a pair of Tour 360's and Puma Titan Tour Ignite's.  Every time I used the 360's it would take me several holes to feel comfortable over the ball.  Just a little difference in the thickness of the heel where I was taller in the 360's.  Awkward feeling.

I also hate playing in something with a weak sole in the forefoot area.  Like the stiffness of a good shoe.

Never going to sink to the level of a Sqairz shoe though.  Even for the extra 5 yards.

many people should realize how much validity there are in your observations.

low profile shoes require an adjustment in setup and stance.

more 'experienced' shoes may have out of round heels or similarly worn outsoles.

components in synthetic golf shoes break down due to time and wear.

buy some new ones every now and then.

you'll feel better, walk healthier and your buddies notice.

when they mention it, your ego gets pumped.

win-win.

I use old shoes to hit the range all the time, never had that issue. I wear multiple brands of shoes and never had that issue. I hope it all works out good for you.

I'm always confused when I see people on YouTube or whatever doing indoor putting drills in their bare feet or socks. I measured myself once and I was a good 1.5 inches shorter in my socks than I was my regular shoes. So if you're putting in your socks, you're turning your 34 inch putter into a 35.5 inch putter. And if you're using a mat, make that a 35.75 or 36 inch putter.

Sure, you can choke down on the putter, but the point is that you're basically using a very different setup to practice than you actually use in a golf round. The swing weight will definitely be far different. Myself, I have a $10 pair of slip on shoes that I got a Ross that I always put on when I putt around my house. I only wear them to practice my putting indoors, so it's not like I'm tracking mud around the house.
