F1 fans?

Yeah, I didn't like Max bitching about the pit line. If Mercedes can get stuff figured out, Russell will be happy to mix it up as well. 

 

Mercedes has engine and chassis work to do. McLaren seems to have the chassis, just not the engine. But the folks running Ferrari seem to be doing pretty good. 

 

Too bad for Botas, too. It's great to see him getting it done out in the midfield.

Great race yesterday, really good watch.

 

Mercedes is more than a second off the pace right now, they are going to have to start taking some pretty big swings one way or another. The only chance they had yesterday was gambling on tire strategy and even if they had gotten lucky on the VSC timing - it wasn't going to work out.

Both Ferrari and Red Bull said it's a development war now. Only this time there is a cost cap they have to work with. So where do you put your development dollars if you are Mercedes?

 

Russell said the porpoising was 99% of the problem, but the other Mercedes powered cars looked all that much better.

Amazing to me that Mercedes is having such a difficult time figuring out the new formula. To go from essentially dominating, to no podiums and Lewis in 10th or 11th position every time I look, feels surreal to me. I am admittedly an F1 novice. So just observations from a casual fan. 
I will add that it’s a lot more entertaining to watch since Lewis isn’t miles ahead every time I look like it was before last season. Good job F1! 👍🏼

I still am sort of mystified at everything I hear Toto saying about how it could be half a year before they figure this out and can get the parts made to change the car setup? Have they really misjudged/underestimated/screwed up the new car release *that* badly?

 

Look I guess even the Yankees or the Patriots have rebuilding periods but man, I did not see this coming at all.

 

Makes me wonder how long Hamilton is going to stick around. If he gets to the end of the year and they are 3rd in the constructors and dont have a real positive outlook - is he going to want to stick around?

If he loses to Russell this year, I'm 90% sure he will walk. I'm about 75% sure he will lose to Russell, so there is that. 

 

He has more F1 experience than Russell, but it's a new car for both of them. And everyone knows Russell can drive, he just needed a better car. Right now he seems to be getting more out of the crappy Mercedes than Hamilton, so we will see where the development goes.

I wonder how much too is the engineers putting slightly different setups on the cars to see if they can find something that works out there. Not sure - but I think thats what I'd do in their situation.

 

There's just no way I'm buying that on driving skill alone Russell is a second a lap better driver than Hamilton - I just cant make that leap yet.

Yet he was getting a Williams into Q3, so he was finding almost that much out of a worst car.

 

Both Mercedes and McLaren were running different setups per car to try to see what works. The reason Hamilton didn't make Q2 was the last change they made to his car made it worse not better and they ran out of time. 

 

Both those teams are grasping at straws. Both have chassis issues to go along with the PU struggles. They didn't make enough or appropriate engine changes for E10. If they can get the power back it will just be the bouncing. Russell seems to think it's just the bouncing, but the PU doesn't seem to be all that this year.

The craziest thing to me is still the idea that Red Bull Powertrains are a thing. Ferrari makes the best road cars on the planet. AMG makes the most insane luxury supercars ever. Red Bull makes sodas, and now F1 engines and chassis. 🤣

 

Williams was crazy back in the day to be a constructor. But they weren't building turbo V6 hybrids, either.

I was under the impression they are Red Bull engines by name only. And that Honda still produces and assemble the engines???

They built a big a** factory and filled it with a bunch of Mercedes engineers. 🤣 

 

There are some Honda guys in there and they stole guys from other teams, too.

Absolutely fantastic. As someone that goes out there twice a year, a night race out there would be absolutely bonkers. Still have tons of logistical questions but man its going to be something.

 

This layout is absolute madness, it is going to be SICK to watch at night. Wow.

Figured I would just hit a few thoughts.

 

McLaren....what on earth has happened?  A bit behind the eight ball with the Mercedes power, sure, but man, they can't get anything to go right.

 

I see the post about night racing.  I get it on one level, but on another, I'm not sure how much of a fan of it I am.  One point I saw made was that the glare from the lights made the visor cam almost useless.  FWIW.

 

Going to be a great fight between Ferrari and RB.  And if Merc can get their situation sorted out, things could get real interesting.  

 

I do think what you are seeing with Ferrari and Merc is that the decisions regarding chasing last year's championships are showing up now.  But I can't explain RB under that scenario.

The thing that I couldn't wrap my head around was since Latifi is somewhat bankrolling the team, why would his dad go for something like that.  Not to mention Rosberg never wants to drive F1 again.

If you have ever spent daylight hours in Saudi Arabia, you would understand why they race at night. Vegas will be almost as bad.

Nowhere near it, absolutely nothing like it. I've been doing LV trips in November for the last 20 years or so and IMO its an absolutely perfect time of year to go out there.

 

Lows in the 40s or colder at night - getting into the 60s or *maybe* 70s during the day. End of the month will be towards the colder end of that scale.

I've actually never been to Vegas (yet, but an F1 race might change all that) but I spent 4 months in the UAE and have no desire to ever return. F1 race or not. 🤣 

 

It sounds pleasant in late Fall and a race would be awesome to attend. The wife and I were already looking at options.
