Another entertaining race this weekend, Mercedes is really making the best of a bad situation so far this year.

With 2 DNF's, Max has a hell of a hill to climb. But he had DNF's last year and is rocking the #1. Charles looks on point and Ferrari look strong. I expect Mercedes to get in the mix, but McLaren is right behind them.

Toto said they had a ton of stuff in the works. They had to, it's hurting business and that's why Mercedes might get out of F1 entirely. But if they can at least fight up front, it helps. 

 

The cost cap was put in place because Mercedes has more money than everyone but Red Bull. Since they can't just throw truckloads of money at it, it's like actual work and stuff. 🤣

With the exception of GR's safety car benefit which catapulted him up the order, MB looked pretty good,, well much better. Clearly they have found a little success. It will be interesting to see what their next upgrade brings. However, I got the sense last year that they would be fine with a year of less than. I think they also felt like the other teams would also be a step behind, which most are clearly not.

I think the Mercedes power unit isn't tops with the E10 change. Ferrari worked with Shell on major changes. Looks like Red Bull did, too.

 

I think they are also missing a ton of top level folks who aren't easy to replace. Not like you can just hit up Indeed for a new aero engineer.

 

Or maybe they did and that's the problem. 🤣

I suspect you are right.  From the looks of the car I suspect that most R$D went into the aero package which did not pan out. I do think they will get there, but it won't be before the summer break. I hope I am wrong though.

When you look at the Mercedes customer teams, they are all having speed issues it seems. I know Mercedes will either be back or will be gone. They won't be a midfield team because that hurts the image and business.

After FP2 it really looked like Russell would be contending for pole, then they clearly swung and missed in the wrong direction. Really encouraging run overall IMO. I think the spending cap has hurt them more than any other team, clearly they cant just toss all the money they want to at things and make it better. Oddly enough when Andretti was in the booth Saturday and they were talking about Andretti Racing coming to F1 - they were also talking about the issues Merc was having with the spending cap.

 

Not drawing any conclusions but I thought it was interesting.

I just know if my company lost 20+ of our top engineers to Mitsubishi, it would take us at least 2 years to restaff, back fill, retrain. And we don't build F1 engines. 

 

I'm more interested in what Porsche will do with Red Bull Powertrains. It sounds like there is a deal there.

Monaco is normally pretty dull. This race (when if finally got started) was exceptional. 

 

I do believe it would have been better had we started on time, but we still ended up with an exciting race. Yeah not as much passing, but the threat was always there and Alonso's game of keeping everyone behind was epic and slightly funny.

Monaco weekend is about the qualifying.  Race tends to be boring.

 

What I am curious about is whether they should have started or not.  I loved Martin Brundle basically saying "well if we're going to wait for better weather why not just start it tomorrow?"  BUt then the clock would have started(max of 2 hours racing within a 3 hour window-We were told the clock didn't start since they didn't start).  And they would have red-flagged the race with the rain that came.   So maybe we got more racing in?  I don't know.

 

And while Ferrari Ferrari'd Chuck's chances at a win, Albon did not show himself well with his antics. 

 

On a side note, and apologies if there is a thread, Marcus Ericsson won Indy yesterday.  Jimmie Johnson crashed out with 5 laps to go. Race was red-flagged.  2 laps of racing to go when they went green.  But they can't do anything except cool the car down a bit when they are red flagged(or at least that red flag).  So.... can anyone account for Michael Masi's whereabouts yesterday?

Apparently the delay in start had nothing to do with weather (as we were all lead to believe) and instead was due to a massive power outage that meant they couldnt use several of the starting systems and more. 

 

Would have been nice to know, because I agreed with Brindle. This is the pinnacle of racing and they should be able to race on rain regardless or potential downpours. Kinda why they have they have extreme wet tyres.

 

Anyway still was a solid race. Unfortunately missed qualify with family in town and having to show them the sights before they went back to Canada.

 

As for Albon, meh, I certainly prefer him to others like Latif who managed to crash behind a safety car and Stroll who seems to cause or be in a crash every race. They would be at the top of my list to replace either mid season or next for some fresh talent.

Monaco needs to be left off the calendar. It's just not a good track for the larger modern cars. Rain tried to make it interesting, but then FIA stepped in the way. Gasly made some great moves, but Alonso ruined that feeling entirely.

Agree completely, its just not a good race to watch.

 

Monaco is about the parties, the yachts, the casinos - everything but the racing. Its just an awful race from a pure racing standpoint.
