Quick Question on Mineral Spirits for Grip Change - Fast or Slow to Dissolve?

shadymg

Recommended Posts

Been doing lots of research on setting up a little grip changing area, and the last component left is the Jasco Odorless Mineral Spirits. Lowes has 2 options, and no clue which should I use and couldn't' find information. Do i want the "Fast to Dissolve" or the "Slow to dissolve"?

Fast - https://www.lowes.com/pd/Jasco-32-fl-oz-Fast-to-Dissolve-Odorless-Mineral-Spirits/50298049

Slow - https://www.lowes.com/pd/Jasco-32-fl-oz-Slow-to-dissolve-Odorless-mineral-spirits/5001634725

Thanks!

Don’t use slow. Fast for sure. I mistakenly got slow one time and it’s a creamy texture that doesn’t dry and eats away at the grip tape. Every single grip failed.

well.....damn. I wonder what's going to happen then....that's exactly what i ordered and is supposedly being shipped to the Lowes near me. I wonder why it's not for sale in CA....so do i have no choice but to buy the slow dissolve one?

I've never see the "slow to disolve" or "fast to disolve" but I did buy some odorless and I will not do that again.  It was creamy/milky.  I used some last night (havent touched in in over a year as I went to NAPHTA) and found it to be chunky.

Maybe the milky one does say "slow to dissolve".  I will have to look.

Well I tried to buy it on ebay and amazon both orders refunded.

I guess this is the option that's allowed in CA, it's $10, but no big deal - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Klean-Strip-1-qt-Odorless-Mineral-Spirits-CARB-Formula-QKSP94005CA/202511760#product-overview

Still not sure why the other one wouldn't be allowed

Do you live near Long Beach?
eventho this one was allowed everywhere  in California a while back

My first bottle of odorless worked great.  Eventually, after a few sets of grips and returning the run off to the bottle, it got chunky and weird.  Bought another bottle and it was chunky right away.  Switched to Coleman fuel and no more chunks.

Can you just order grip solvent from the Golf Works?  That stuff has never let me down.

I'm in CA also, and was able to order the citrus-based golfworks stuff, which works great.

Edit: quart bottle is p/n #SOMQT

I looked up the safety data sheets (SDS) and the fast dissolve is 100% mineral spirits, while the slow dissolve is only 40% mineral spirits. My guess that the other 60% is water and some chemical to keep the water and mineral spirits from separating, hence the creamy white color.

The slow dissolve is claimed to be "greener", so that is probably why California doesn't allow the Fast Dissolve.

The problem here is the "odorless" part.  I recommend not using any mineral spirits that are labeled "odorless" for any club work.  The additive to make it odorless can be problematic depending on the brand of mineral spirits, so just avoid it.

I MAY HAVE TO MOVE OR START A SMUGGING OPERATION.

I use gorilla tape and a grip that is 1/16 over size, .600 core on .600 butt to build up shaft up to .660.

Less then perfect solvent and a stuck grip big trouble.
I soak grips in HOT water makes them soft.

Just my two cents as a painting contractor. I never reuse mineral spirits when regripping or cleaning my paint equipment. It's super easy to contaminate it and run into problems.

The faster a solvent dries can be looked at like high octane gasoline. You can sort that out just by picking the most expensive mineral spirit  - it will be full strength and cleaner.VM&P Naptha is a very highly refined mineral spirit and dries the fastest. I don't necessarily think it's worth it for regripping. It's more expensive and really rough on your skin.

okay, so update for those in California. Lowes definitely doesn't sell the Mineral Spirit in the store. Frustrating experience, as I went to go look at paint thinners (since I had read it was an alternative), but only saw a giant bottle of paint thinner, and then a lot of other stuff which no clue how it would work with grips (see below):

image.png.913cd27dda65c96a37b904ae1556911e.png

So since I didn't want 128 oz, I just left the store frustrated. BUT, in checking Home Depot, it looks like they DO CARRY a Mineral Spirit in the store, as the prior poster mentioned the one with CARB formula. So I'm going to go there after work and pick it up unless someone else advises it's a bad bad idea. Not sure why HD can carry it and Lowes can't, but whatever lol.

Why not just order the citrus based stuff from Golfworks?  It works, it smells better than mineral spirits, and can be shipped to CA.

Shadymg, that should work fine.

So...another update. Thanks to worthless home depot website that said they had it in stock. Got there, and they did not. Staff insisted that it was LA county which prohibited the sale. I ended up purchasing Paint Thinner in a metal tin.

Then....got to the office and got an email that my Lowe's order of odorless mineral spirits was ready for pickup.

I picked it up, but Andy's comment made me nervous because it's in a plastic container. See pic below. So....do I keep the paint thinner instead? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️
