Today sure.  But the captain has to put the players in the best position to succeed.  Don't setup a course that doesn't fit your team.  Don't play combinations that don't really work.

 

I have no dog in the fight, but I find "the players need to play better" arguments to be simplistic, and absolve captains of responsibility when things go bad.  As was asked, why split up the sisters?  Things like that can have a big impact on performance.  These aren't robots.

I think it's a hindsight blame.  Did Catriona Matthew do everything right this week,...or did her team just happen play better.  

 

Captains are generally viewed as very good, when their team plays better than the other team

It's kind of like saying the Falcons and the Seahawks should have simply completed the passes in the Super Bowls rather than absolutely stupid coach decisions cost them those games.

Captains are generally viewed as very good when they don't get in their teams way.  I don't recall much criticism of Davis Love at Medinah.  Europe just made a crazy comeback on Sunday.  Tom Watson at Gleneagles on the other hand...

How so?  The coaches got in the way of their teams winning, just like Pat Hurst appears to have gotten in the way of the US team having the best chance at winning.

I disagree that Pat Hurst got in anybody's way.

Agreed. I don't buy into the whole pairings being important thing. Players are responsible for executing shots. These are pros. Hit the ball close and make the putts. Seen way too many poor wedge shots this week.

Whatever the outcome, the course did not favor the long hitters. How does the longest hitting American, Lexi, hit first into the 18th, being shorter than the shortest hitting Euro? Too many holes took driver out of the players hands.

So impressive to burst on the scene with a win, then have to go over to the European Tour for a must win to get on the team.   A really talented player

Tip of the hat to the European team. They showed up ready to play. The Americans generally have good singles matches, but they fell flat in the early matches when they needed to even it up. 

 

Oh, and stinking it up on the 1st day didn't help the cause.
