Azinger tv commentary

Perhaps you haven't noticed, but Joe Buck (who is pretty good BTW) (a) isn't a color commentator but an anchor, a very different role; and (b) doesn't do golf on TV any more since Fox sold their rights to NBC.

There's quite a few who can't differentiate who's role is what.  Feherty doesn't do what Bones does.  Maltbie doesn't do what Hicks does.  Dottie Pepper doesn't do the same job as IBF.  Faldo and Azinger are supposed to be the lead analysts.  Like Johnny Miller and Ken Venturi before them.

Azinger sits in a position that has historically been a Major champion and who is expected to contribute something useful to the telecast.  In that respect, he swings and misses pretty consistently.  I've got to think that NBC makes a change in the off-season.  If I was them I would give Phil a blank check and tell him he can play all the CBS tournaments he wants to and miss the cuts on the NBC events!

I actually do not like him at all as a TV commentator.  To me he is absolutely the worst.

Agree with this 1000%. Doesn't know when to shut up and just rambles on to hear himself talk.

Well one thing's for sure, you all have plenty of passion for golf and that's surely a good thing!  The only comments that I think I need to react to are those casting Nobel Prize winners as ordinary Joes and Janes who pulled strings and got the award with little or no credibility.  All I can say is that is a lot of baloney.

Azinger is going to age himself out sooner rather than later , with each passing year he has less and less in common with those currently playing, NBC needs someone fresh but unfortunately Justin Leonard isn't it, David Duval will probably take a run at champion events this year, and Phil with a five year exemption isn't in any hurry to give it up...not sure anyone is actively campaigning for the spot right now

I don't exactly know if you need someone who played golf at the highest level, by highest level i mean someone who won multiple times and majors.  Those guys are usually arrogant.  Anyone who understands golf how hard the game is, with a good voice and good personality, someone who can take and give jabs without it crossing the line.  Azinger ain't it, he just rambles.  I liked Miller for the most part, but over his last few years he became intolerable.

he is still new at it...not the easiest job...I remember Venturi and he had his issues too, carping on the same thing all weekend...Azinger is more critical, and as players, we know he's right about it...dont really have a problem with him...there are many far worse color guys...give him some seasoning...

Don't understand all the Zinger hate.  He has some idiosyncrasies like everyone does, but he has the resume and he calls it like he sees it, including criticism when a player hits a bad shot, and that's what I want.  Then again I also liked Johnny Miller but seemed to remember a lot of criticism when he was announcing.

I seem to remember many years ago(20+) that Johnny Miller was pretty critical of certain guys, like Jim Furyk and Andy North, which I never understood by all accounts Furyk and North seemed to be good competitors and gentlemen as well. Maybe commentators put their foot in their mouth because they are under pressure to say something.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

Having the resume and being a commentator are two different things.  Johnny Miller’s voice alone is 100 times better.  If a non golfer tunes into golf when Azinger is talking they instantly tune out.  My wife is a prime example.

thank you straightshot 7!  I might be in the minority it sounds like but I do.  I've found that once you do or don't like something or someone we're hardwired to find supporting evidence for our initial assessment.  Changing that dynamic is very very difficult.  That's not my opinion, that's social science research by Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman.

aka, Confirmation Bias.

The bias effect "is stronger for emotionally charged issues and deeply entrenched beliefs."  Not sure that Paul Azinger's announcing is an emotionally charged issue, though, although I do find myself yelling at the tv when he says something stupid.

Uh oh you got me, I'm really Paul's sister, dammit you're good!

You must not have watched LPGA golf when they had Azinger commenting on the Ladies US Open.  He absolutely could not pronounce a considerable amount of the player's names.

You would think, as a paid commentator early in his career, he would have made it a point to know the players in the event in which he was offering expert commentary.

He was whisked out of Ladies golf faster than Lanny Wadkins' backswing.

I finally figured out what Azinger sounds like.  He has the strangest voice.  He sounds like somebody who's been constipated for 3 weeks.

Whisked out of Ladies golf and onto the PGA Tour?

Agree - the risk with the guys that played at a high level is that they assume they will always know everything about the current game when actually they know a lot about how the game used to be played and are too lazy to do the work and research to stay up to date with today's players, their stats strengths and weaknesses and how they play the game.  They are supposed to be in the analyst role but they are not analysing anything just saying whatever comes into their head that is based on nothing of substance or some memory of the game from 1995.

I reread all the posts and want to thank you all for your comments.  Actually did not anticipate such strong feelings but I’m quite pleased to see them, even the ones that are just sarcastic without adding anything to the discussion.  It means that you care regardless of the way you express that ( my advice-if you want to add to any discussion state reasons.  Flippant f.u. type responses only make others not care about your posts.)

So I watched alot of Sunday’s coverage thinking about the negative posts from many of you—-looking for problems

In his commentary so I could be a more critical viewer.  And I found a number of those kinds of comments many of you found objectionable.

But in the end I gave up looking for Azinger’s missteps and found myself caught up in his passionate, enthusiastic —and for me—knowledgeable commentary.  That freed me up to enjoy top notch pressure golf accomplishments.

I searched to see if anyone started this thread and here we are....  Paul is a good man but I think he tries to hard and as others have commented his analogies are pretty bad. I can

imagine anyone under age 50 don't know what the hell he's talking about because he often brings up 70s,80s,90s references.

Who should they replace him with ???

Yes. He’s all 3….

“passionate, enthusiastic —and for me—knowledgeable”

However, he’s also just simply inarticulate, his delivery is sloppy, and hes totally brutal to listen to.

Wow, I must be in the strong minority but I love me some Paul Azinger. Love the emotion in his voice when he wants to emphasize a point, and commentary he’ll make like… “You have to give up control to get it”, is something most of us can understand and gives insight into the mental challenge these guys are dealing with.
