I’ll give Horchsel some leeway as Scheffler’s performance in the WGC Match Play was apparently a part of why he was picked. Given Horschel actually won that event, he probably is okay to feel a bit aggrieved.

Stricker had to make his choices before Billy won the tournament.  Can't expect Stricker to have a crystal ball, nor should the person ranked 17th be expecting a call.  That's called entitlement.

Agreed. His best finish after his win at the match play event until the Tour Championship was 17th. Scheffler played better during the rest of the season than Horschel after he lost in the match play finals.

True, however it might be handy to pick someone who is red hot and peaking at the the right time. Just unfortunate for him picks were decided before the BMW PGA

Disagree, Horschel was close enough to the team that even some kind of acknowledgment was merited even if it was just a 5 minute phone call.

And he won the world MATCH PLAY, I think some people are forgetting the Ryder cup is match play (see Poulter, only decent thing he won was the world Match play, and he seems to have done well in Ryder cups)

 

I think Horschel should have got a pick, especially as there was 6 picks

Honestly, I am not even sure what they are doing if he is not on the radar for a pick?! He might blow hot and cold but he has won and as you say, in matchplay. For me that would put him ahead of Scheffler.

He probably talked to him 25 times. He did after all , report on his healing up progress.  
 

I just think it’s funny that Billy thought he was in the running , and apparently he never was.  Sounds like assumptions both ways. 
 

but let’s take Phil for example.  How many conversations do you think it took to let him down easy ?  More than 1 I’d say.  Plus making him a vice capn.  He hasn’t played well since his win either.  Nor before it.

That's fine, but where do you draw the line then about who should get called.  Billy (The Camera) Ho was 17th.  Should the 18th person also get called?  How about the 20th or the 25th?  What if the 50th person was also very close to the team...should he get called?

 

Billy's time would be better spent working on his game so he can automatically qualify next time around.

Billy is not on the same level of golfing achievement as Phil.  Phil is a superstar.  Superstars get different treatment.  Ask Phil Jackson.

I wonder if the WGC match play was in August vs February or March if that would change things. I said before that the US team uses a lot of stats but they are stroke play stats and match play is different.  Poulter rarely plays at the same level in stroke play events.  As for a courtesy call I would have gone to the 20 th player, so 8 total condolence calls. But these guys know if they want to be on the team they need to qualify to make sure of it.

Why does there need to be a line? It’s a subjective decision.

 

The feeling was that Billy Horschel seemed to, at least, be under consideration.  If I am wrong in that then fine but his name has certainly been brought into the equation by a number of different parties. He will surely have had a conversation with Stricker and/or the Vice Captains before now. In those circumstances you would have thought that a quick phone call would have not been too much of a difficulty particularly where there is the question mark of an injury with one of the guys that is on the team.

Agree. On The calve game alone figjam Gets the call.  🤦‍♂️Except if this argument were about Phil. I’d be getting stoned for saying he deserved a call.  So it just depends on who the punching bag of today is.  The goal posts and outrage changes .  Not directed at you personally
