Dave Pelz and the 64 deg wedge

More than 20 yr after reading the putting bible, I remember to play more break, but now use AimPoint and if an uphill putt, make your target beyond the hole; if a downhill putt, a spot before the hole - which spot depends on slope.

I've never read the putting bible, but I've used that technique for close to 50 years. There's almost always a spot of some sort on the green that I can use as an aiming point. Even when I'm in close with a dead straight putt I seldom aim at the hole, but usually a spot a foot or so before the hole, lest I hit it too hard.  As for the 64 wedge, I found the perfect place for it: in my garage. After four years living there I donated it to the local high school team. A club that only went 25 yards with a full swing didn't deserve a slot in my bag.

Dave Pelz is often full of garbage. Encouraging people to use a 64 degree wedge is one such example. Teaching that putters can swing straight back and straight through is another.

His "Putting Bible" is 416 pages long and the only useful information he imparts is "play more break."

So just repeat the same stuff rather than actually anser a simple question, gotcha...

That's how my putting stroke is. Chipping too, for that matter. It requires a short stroke, and keeping your eyes on the club head in the backswing, so it's not for everyone, but by the same token one can't say that it's not for anyone.

There was no question put to me. But I do appreciate the nod to Karsten Solheim, who was a golf visionary and has contributed a ton more value to golf than Dave Pelz.

But there was, in another thread where you said the exact same thing, which you ignored...  Deflect away kiddo...

I think treating a higher lofted wedge as a "specialty club" is the worst thing you can do if you want to actually use one to its fullest potential.  Treat it just like you do with any other club that you need to practice with and understand to be able to appropriately utilize.  I use a 62* wedge because it allows me to never be short sided and I can create more clubhead speed on the shorter shots that works better around the courses I play.  I do not hit a ton of fullish swings with it and I try to stick to the 50/50 approach while around the greens (50% fly, 50% roll), and the 62* allows me to do that in almost any situation.  I think the potential for me to use that club vs a 5w or 2h is much higher and having that option on the short end of my bag is much more beneficial to my scoring than a 5w I at most will hit 2x a round (while I could hit a 62* on every hole if I'm always short sided).

It is no harder to use a 62-64 vs a 60 or a 58, you just have to practice with it and understand how far you swings go.  If you just want to plug it in your bag for certain situations on some courses, you'll never be successful with it.  I'm a firm believer of options at the short side of your bag vs the long end of the bag as thats where you truly score.  From 220 with a 5w you're trying to hit a green and you can do about the same with a 4i or 3w, but the options a higher lofted wedge give you (from a scoring standpoint) far outweigh the benefits of longer options for 99% of golfers.

I used to carry a 64 and it is dependent on the course you play. I am playing on a course that has small greens and the 64 did come in handy but it also left me with one less club on the upper end of my bag. At the time I was carrying a 52/58/64. Now I switched back to a 52/60 and I can cover everything with the way I open up my wedges. I can cover anything inside 90 yards.

Nope. I'm not sure why you have animosity toward me. I have none for you. These are my opinions. You're entitled to yours as well.

Unpopular opinion - Pelz is a hack.  Yeah, I said it.  No real surprise there aren't more people playing his "system".

- One of Golf Digest’s 25 most influential coaches of the 20th century

- Cleveland’s wedge guy for several years

- 1999 NYTimes bestseller book

- Coached Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Payne Stewart, Colin Montgomerie, Patrick Reed and other winners

So his own brand of clubs didn’t make it. But as accomplishments go, I wish I could be as “hack” as Pelz!

Had a Pine Meadow 68 aka, (The Last Wedge) just for one local course I played often. Many of the greens were lined w/various pine trees of all sizes, making any short approach shot off the green very difficult to play.Pretty much impossible to chip on due to the pine needles and turf. The 68 was a great tool for simply flying any pine tree greenside hazzard, as it sailed high and landed soft. Pretty much useless on most any other course I played, but not this one. Still have it in case I play that specific course some time down the road.

If your greens are baked and crowned, the 64 may be useful to stop the ball.

Otherwise, I would not use it.

I have a md4 64°... i love it.. when i dont use it wisely though... not good. Its basically really great around the green specially short sided which happends often. I had a 15 yard shot with a bunker infront of me last round... i pulled the 64 as the pin was front and tight... you can just guess what happend there.

Skulled it into a pond behind the green and took a triple?

I don't know about 64-degree wedges in general but the 64-degree version of Callaway's Sure Out is a heck of a get out of jail club. There's so much loft you don't need to open the face to get the ball up and out of 'most any lie. And the sole is so wide and cambered that even with the face square it just wants to glide over turf or pine needles or sand or whatever awkward surface the ball might be sitting on for a trouble shot.

When I used to carry one, at least once every couple rounds it would gouge the ball up and onto the grip out of a junky lie where I'd have been seriously considering taking an unplayable otherwise. But that's a special trouble club, you can't really use it like a general purpose wedge that just happens to have four degrees more loft than your 60. Or at least I could not.

Now that I don't have one in the bag, for those type of trouble shots I either open the face up a good bit on my normal lob wedge or I just chop the ball out with a PW or something and try to punch it onto the green without elevating it.
